This episode really shows how much of a good man and hero Mace really is. The bullet that was shot at Mace is called a Judas Bullet. It is featured in Luke Cage and is made from leftover Chitauri metal from the Battle of New York.
Jeff Mace is such a tragic hero, he's a man that always had a desire to do good, one accident later and he gets a chance to do it, but then that chance falls apart.
If you noticed in the backgrounds of previos episodes, you can actually see Burrows walking around with the briefcase in the background, setting up what happens in this episode. For example in episode 8, you can see Burrows walking of the Quinjet with the briefcase to get Mace ready before the battle against Eli.

I would do what Fitz is doing. As a scientist myself I think our job is to see how things, especially what we did, got wrong because eventually someone will try to make it right again so it's better if you, someone inside the problem, just try to solve it now. Humans will always pursue knowledge. Some scientists died, knowing they were dying because of what they were doing, and they did not stop. Fitz is one of them. He would probably science himself dead.
