  • A short video that shows what Camera Lucida, the iOS app, is all about.
    Camera Lucida 9.0 Is a 5 star iOS app found here: itunes.apple.c...
    Although the app is now up to version 12.0, this introduction is still the best way to understand how the app works.

    Pete, love these videos. Used my osmo yesterday to do a drawing of my grandson and it was great. Today, however, when I set it to front camera, the image looks correct on the drawing surface but my pencil is upside down. Help!

    • @CameraLucidaApp
      @CameraLucidaApp  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! There are two ways to correct the camera for the mirroring and perspective issues you get when using an angled mirror. So, my response depends upon whether you're correcting the camera issues using the manual controls or the automatic controls. If you're using the manual controls, it's possible you hit the "flip image" manual control. If you're using the automatic controls, it is possible that you placed your target upside down, so the app flipped the camera view to match. Either way, feel free to use the "contact us" button in the app and send me an email, ok? As a general rule, it's pretty tough to help people through responses to the comments thread of a TH-cam video.

    • @evilAshTheDog
      @evilAshTheDog 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pam, your best bet is to use the "Contact Us" button within the app. That will send me an email and will include important information such as your app version, operating system, etc. Older versions of the app used a settings page entry to determine camera to use. Later versions use the camera control slide-out in the setup page. If you're hitting the "BACK" button and still seeing your face (the FRONT camera), then it's possible that the system doesn't think the back camera is available. I can diagnose it better if we converse via email, ok?

      I don't monetize these videos, so nope, nothing comes to me from the ads. TH-cam delivers ads as part of it's business strategy, but I've never put up these videos for monetization as the app is the product, not the video. Personally, I use the TH-cam premium service that requires me to pay each month but strips out all the ads.

    Pete.....loving this app. I did purchase the inexpensive ipad stand you recommended in another video. Works very well. However, I must be missing something.....I am finding it uncomfortable to have the ipad so far away (and at an awkward angle) to be able to trace. I have tried angling the ipad 45 deg and doing the same for the drawing surface. It helps somewhat but limits me to paper size. What am I missing? Do you (or do you plan on) have a video to explain the set up and give examples of how you can adjust those parameters for larger or smaller drawings. Does the distance from ipad to paper have to be the same?

    • @evilAshTheDog
      @evilAshTheDog 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Karen! I too think that if the iPad is further than approximately 14" from the paper that drawing becomes impractical because our arms aren't long enough to draw on the paper and still allow us to look at the screen. This limits the size of your final drawing to something around 12-14 inches - practically. But, if you're willing to mirror your device's screen to another screen like a laptop or TV, you can free yourself of these limitations. Here's a video that shows how! th-cam.com/video/1CdDSiRd6Gs/w-d-xo.html

    Like the product, but isn’t it just stupid that the device cannot be used by left handed people because thing cannot be adjusted to left hand side? I saw the advertisement for this and immediately went to this video, seeing if I wanted to purchase it, but then I noticed that when you try to put it on the right side, you won’t be able to use it. Not trying to be mean, but I am very mad and dissapointed. :(

Feel free to give me more details either here or directly at my email: lucidaPete@gmail.com Most importantly, is there something that doesn't work for left handed people? And if so, can you suggest what changes I could make to fix whatever the issue is?

    Hey Pete,
    Hope you are well. I'm hangin' in there as well.
    I have a question for you. Several years ago I downloaded Camera Lucida (I think maybe 9.0 ??) and I have used it quite often on my ipad. When I downloaded it originally, I thought it would appear on my iphone as well but I guess I was wrong. Is there any way that I can have my Camera Lucida appear on both my ipad AND my iphone? I prefer the ipad for the size but I had an opportunity to do a little sketching the other day but only had my iphone 8 with me. Any suggestion? Thanks Pete. Stay well... be safe.

    • @CameraLucidaApp
      @CameraLucidaApp  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure! Once you've bought the app, you and your entire family can use it on all of your devices and you also get free updates for the life of the app. It likely won't appear on your iPhone - you'll have to search for it on the App store and hit the Download button. If it says "buy" instead of just showing you the download button, then you're probably just not logged in to the App Store using the same Apple ID (email address) that you used when you first bought it. From the settings page for iOS you can tap on the top bar and log out of the App Store and then log back in - then you should see that any app you've purchased will be available to download. Hope that helps!

    • @evilAshTheDog
      @evilAshTheDog 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hi Buddy, this is Pete, the author of the app. If your question is "how did I program it", I'm afraid I'll have to keep that a secret! It was definitely non-trivial when it came to handling the various rotations, perspective transformations... and recording screen time-lapse videos. If your question is more about "does it really do that?", then the answer is "absolutely!" Being able to zoom in and pan around while having the live camera view and the reference image remain in perfect alignment while doing all the other things it can do is a great feature of the app.

    • @bddybdz
      @bddybdz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Peter Moeykens wow amazing! I thought if you start to draw at a certain size and then you zoom in that your drawing will be ‘off’ because of drawing bigger, but it’s amazing it can do that. Sorry my english isn’t perfect and had difficulties wording my question 😉 Thank you!

      Thanks! I've really tried my best to keep all those iPad 2s (the first with a camera) working. My kids and I still use them. The only feature you'll miss is the ability to do "live" recordings with audio as the iPad2 doesn't have the necessary hardware. You'll still be able to do time lapse videos. Also, focus will be limited to "auto focus" rather than tap-to-focus. You also may lack the ability to lock down an exposure as if memory serves me, that is also not supported on the hardware. But, it still works and all the key features are there!

Version 9.0 even has a button in the tools section called "share my work in progress". While in the draw mode, hit the "up" arrow button to slide open the extended menu. Then, swipe down until you see a small rectangular window... tap it to take a quick snapshot of your work in progress. It will then open up a window to share the image via social media, email, etc. This is covered in a later 9.0 tutorial that you can find within the app. The precise location is right here: th-cam.com/video/2PRstqOOT3o/w-d-xo.html#t=03m40s

    • @CameraLucidaApp

      The app is limited to accessing and taking photos on your device. I've received a few requests for people to be able to access DropBox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive and a few other choices, but I was hoping to wait until a library existed that wrapped up those choices as each one requires a completely separate implementation. For now, each third party file hosting service has their own iOS apps that allows you to easily save to your camera roll.

    i find it extremely hard to center the image on a piece of paper, also the ipad can only go as low as the height of your pencil. This is not as easy to use as you make it seem.

    • @CameraLucidaApp
      @CameraLucidaApp  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aaron, if you're putting your iPad's camera close to the paper (as close as the length of a pencil), then the camera won't include the edges of the paper so I can understand why centering it might be tricky in that case. Try tossing a dime or something onto the center of your paper to help you know where the middle of the paper is. And remember the camera is offset on your device, so your iPad will have to be offset as well. Lastly (or maybe firstly?) be sure to rotate your device so the camera is where you want it to be before you try aligning it. The app will auto-rotate the user interface as needed. If you're trying to make a small drawing by getting your camera really close (like closer than 8 inches), it will be too cramped to use. In that case, put the iPad up higher and use zooming as needed. You can either do this by just zooming in draw mode, or if you're brave, open the camera controls in the setup screen and zoom the camera a little before you start drawing. Don't hesitate to contact me at lucidapete@gmail.com if you need more help or advice! Our Facebook group (Camera Lucida) is filled with folks with creative ways of using the app as well.

      ok thank you! that dime idea is a good one. I am just learning so hopefully I'll figure it out. I traced a sunflower, it came out nicely but wasn't centered, I made a stand similar to the one you show. I used threaded rod so I can adjust the height. It was about 12" above the paper, I have to move the paper around to center it under my ipad. Thanks!

    Could this be used on paper that’s much smaller than the iPad screen? I was thinking of getting it to transfer digital art I drew on an iPad app into a sketchbook that’s quite small.

    • @CameraLucidaApp
      @CameraLucidaApp  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure! The size of the screen isn't related to the size of the final art. The distance between the camera and the paper determine that. You can make very small drawings without a problem. You get your phone or iPad as close to your paper as is comfortable making sure the camera can still focus and then you can easily zoom in. Going the other direction and making the final drawing larger than around 14" requires mirroring to an external display to draw comfortably.

In the meantime, I can say that 16x20 is beyond the size that you can comfortably create by holding your device over your paper as shown here. You would need your camera almost 20 inches away from your paper to do this and you wouldn't be able to both see the screen and draw at the same time. (Unless you used very long brushes!) Is there any way to eliminate the lag between your hand and what you see on the screen while using this? I've used several different programs like this one, both on iPads and android type tablets, and they all seem to have a lag which makes them difficult to use. Does anyone know of a similar program or type of tablet that can be used for this, even if it's specifically made for this purpose? Anyone tried the Osmo?

    • @evilAshTheDog
      @evilAshTheDog 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      El Guapo! The amount of lag is determined by the hardware. Newer hardware has less lag. It's really that simple. Camera Lucida has a settings page where you can tweak the quality of the image VS lag. IE, I let the app reduce the resolution of the camera a bit in order to reduce lag. For the most part, however, I've found that within just a minute or two of using the app, the lag becomes a non-issue as your brain seems to compensate. Your mileage may vary. :)
