I see Gojos role as a teacher is more a guide than direct mentor. He innately understans jujutsu in a way that can't be taught, he never had to learn the way his students do.
He can't offer them theory, but he can offer them experience. He scouted students that have busted potential
Their power was more something they just needed to be pushed into understanding, not taught. So fundamentally all his students have better fundamentals bc they didn't drill it, every moment of training in the field could be deadly.
Most of his students were strong enough overwhelm the vast majority of curses that are actually a threat to Kyoto. They may have had access to more information, but they were never pushed the way Tokyo School was.
Gojo pushes his students to grow, Kusakabe guides them. Ironically if they'd merged schools all of them would have pretty significantly stronger early on in the series than they actually were

Jujutsu students getting graded on academic studies is kind of wild to me because getting A* in Literature doesn't mean jack if your trying to fistfight a spirit made out of primordial fear and hate.
Jujutsu knowledge is very important, there's a reason why kamo, todo and kusakabe are more useful when it comes to teaching stuff
normal subjects are ass in this, only ones that matter are jujutsu theory and any other things related to sorcery (but ig history is an exception when you have 1000 year old fossils walkin around causing trouble)

- Faced off against Toji and only lost an eye, which he apparently got back later probably through RCT
Its cuz gojo intentionally went after the crazy/delinquents. Each student has their flaws. Yuji and Yuta were gonna be executed for Sukuna/Rika, Gojo saw both of them as a chance to do good. Nobara only came because she didn't wanna live in the countryside, and that was crazy enough for Gojo to approve. Megumi was Toji's son, and Gojo still took him in. Maki had no cursed energy, that didn't deter Gojo. Panda is literally just another doll, but was made an exception. And Inumaki cant talk normally, still became a strong sorcerer.
Meanwhile Bumhime took in students that all had superiority complexes, or were actually just weak
I think we need to consider the possibility that Kyoto High is faking their academic grades. If Momo gets a 7/10 Jujutsu Sense score for doing what my ceiling fan does every day then I think their tests are probably asking what 2+2 is

The biggest difference between the schools is that tokyo is trying to make more yuki's, people who focus on they're development and experience for the world. While kyoto focus's on making more geto's, people who are creative and resourcefull even with bad abilities(like bffr, boogie woogie is not a top 20 CT)

Curse Manipulation is top 10 most powerful techniques, Todo was taught by Yuki, and Momo is NOT creative and resourceful(I give Mai a pass because she literally bleeds out just by making a bullet)

Nah its more so the schools rather then the teachers, Utahime teaches more in theory and Gojo more so practical. Both werent bad teacher but unfortunately taught in different schools. If both were im one Tokyo students would be smart in their education not just in sorcery and vice versa Kyoto would be stronger in sorcery.
I have some respect for Yaga for accepting the rejects Kyoto and the higher ups didnt want either because of their clan blood or how troublesome they were. Yaga was aware of this but still did his best to basically raise Gojo Geto and Shoko.

Hey now, Kyoto also had 3 goated students in there! Of course Todo did get trained by Yuki, who’s not affiliated with the school. And Mechamaru didn’t even really go to the school and immediately sold them out when he got the opportunity. And Kamo is grade 1 at best. And everyone else are Kirara victims.
