    It's so amazing that Quakers have a living document to guide them. A document that can dynamically change with the times and deal with new challenges and ideas. Just something else that sets them apart from others that rely on books with ages that can be measured in millenia.

      @@narrowisthewaytoeternity I feel like the main moral princible of Quakerism is "be kind, do good, let people live happily even if its different from how you live"
      Im pretty sure the Bible adresses slavery, which is very out of date by todays standards
      So instead of talking about what life was like from the start of the universe until about 40AD, the Quakerism book talks about current year issues and how to apply the worlds collective current knowledge and how to apply the Quaker moral code along with the changing knowledge of the world
      Im not 100% sure though, as this is not my religion

    Since watching your first video on Quakerism, I've felt quite drawn to seeking out a meeting in my city. I grew up Lutheran (Christian protestant) in a conservative, rural town. Since my late teens I haven't felt connected to the church, and for the longest time I thought I didn't believe in anything. But I can't deny an itch that I think is my soul needing a home. So thank you for introducing me to Quakerism and giving me much food for thought!

      Kenna Hey! Sorry for taking a minute to reply! So I ended up going and have had a really lovely experience. My Meeting has 3 services, two on Sunday that were packed and one on Wednesday nights that’s much smaller. Pre-COVID, I was going nearly every week. It feels really good to start building my own relationship with my own spirituality. I also have met some very good people and am enjoying the journey! I’ve missed going in-person a lot since we closed. Zoom meetings aren’t quite the same.

    I've always said that if someone cannot practically restrict all animal products (because of family circumstances, disability or conditions, etc) but still does everything they safely and practically can, they are still embodying vegan practice, I would go as far as to say they are vegan (though describing themself as such would be quite unhelpful for other people). The vegan society definition of veganism includes the phrase "as far as possible and practicable".

    Quakerism seems like a very positive religion as far as religions go. The emphasis on equality and love, fairness and simplicity is really lovely. I shy away from organized religion for specific reasons and experiences I've had and am just a spiritual person in my own way, but if I ever were to consider a religion to take on, quakerism would probably be pretty high on the list because of the evolving beliefs and thoughts.
    A lot of people use religion as a tool to justify hate abd judgement, but quakerism seems like there would be few ways to do so, and the people drawn to quakerism would seem to be of a certain kind, people drawn to equality and positivity in religion.
    I think there is good and bad in most religions, and generally there will be people who make bad choices or demonstrate bad actions claiming it is on behalf of religious belief, and there will be people for whom religion is motivation to do great good. I have always said that religion can inspire great beauty, wonderful acts of community service and love, the arts, and unity; it can also inspire people to do terrible evil under misguidance. Quakerism seems to at their core not want to hurt anyone or judge anyone, and that makes me so happy even though it is not my own religion.
    I think a lot of Christians for example, have forgotten that to be Christian means to be Christ-Like in your love, support and living ethics. 😕
    Anywho I found this video really great and educational, entertaining and as always, you were lovely, Jessica. Thank you for taking the time to teach people about your religion and personal beliefs! 🌸

      Very well said. I grew up as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, and it was a harmful experience for me. I've grown to learn that it wasn't faith, or spirituality that has damaged me. But humans and our emotional responses and rules. Things get twisted, there's nothing wrong with being close to God in theory

    • @savannam.7048
      @savannam.7048 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rosalina9768 , I'm sorry it was a negative experience for you. I too have had some very unpleasant experiences related to religion. In theory faith can be amazing. Humans are good at mucking things up, as well as misuse and harmful interpretations! But this isn't true for all people in any religion, just some.

    • @rosalina9768
      @rosalina9768 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@savannam.7048 I agree. My experiences taught me about the psychology of being part of a cult, why people perpetrate these things and why people allow themselves to be controlled. It's in our nature to have structure and need belonging. That's the dark side of human nature. But the bright side I learned is our intrinsic need to feel greater than animals, more than just carbon matter. This leads to our writings of Godly things and art and music and the search for God and spirit in general.

I am a christian catholic and have been so forever but I tend to prefer practicing on my own since I can be quite critical of my religion and I have been drawn to quakerism recently but there are almost no qualers in my area. Do you know how to document myself and if there is a platform for me to reach out to potential quakers around me?

      Honestly, I'm not the best person to ask that of. I've always lived in places with Friend's meetings in close proximity. Have you done a search for a meeting near you? A lot of people have no idea they even exist but a surprising number of places have them! I'd say your best bet is to do a little internet digging to see if you can turn something up. There might be an online platform I don't know about! Good luck! Sorry I can't be of more help.

    I just discovered your channel recently and have been consuming mass quantities of your content. This particular series about the Quakers has been fascinating! This is one faith I knew very little about, and I make a habit of learning about many religions. You really do have a lot in common with Buddhism. But rather than accepting the teachings of just one voice, I really like this group search for deeper meaning. Until your videos, I thought the closest match to my own inner faith was the Unitarian Universalist church. Sounds like the Quakers have their stuff together as well. Very heartening to this old Seeker of Truth. Love and hugs from New Jersey USA.

    Wow. The more I learn the more I feel like I would have really benefited from a Quaker upbringing rather than what I was brought up with. I don’t know that I could convert now but I can really get behind so much of it.
    I currently identify as “Spiritualist.” I’ve found my own truths in many religions and cannot stand religious doctrines that beat people down, tell them they’re awful, and/or condone any sort of violence. Although...self defense of a child or someone else vulnerable... maybe circumstantial.

    HUGE SHOUT OUT TO JESSICA for this info! Thanks to Jessica sharing about Quaker beliefs, I started attending my local Friends meeting during the pandemic via Zoom. I have attended quite a few these past few months and have offered to volunteer with them. I have never known a Quaker in real life and began attending alone, but one of my friends has also started attending recently. I was terrified at first (social anxiety), but the group quickly made me feel welcome. Friends are quick to make friends at friends meetings! It's also been really interesting to explain how I found my local friends group (do we capitalize the 'f' in friends?) TO my local friends group. For being a life long agnostic witch who is also non binary, I didn't know how I would be received and how comfortable I'd be able to become, but it's quickly become my safe place in the storm that is 2020.

    The idea of not having a hell really interests me.
    From what I've read, Eastern Orthodox religion doesn't believe in hell as a place distinct from heaven. All souls are redeemed, sort of living in God's direct presence upon death, due to the whole business of salvation; it's up to the soul to experience said presence as "heaven" or as "hell". I wonder if that's compatible with Quaker thought...

    For me, I'm very aware of the research that says the vast majority of people who commit crimes of sexual abuse were themselves abused as children. There is a cycle and it cannot be just the abused/abuser's responsibility to break it, although many do.
    I believe the responsibility must be shared by the larger society that over-sexualizes children and which not only does not step in and prevent abuse, but also fails to comfort and care for abused people in general. Should a pedophile be separated from society so that they do not hurt any one else? Yes, certainly. But if we would make that place of societal separation a place of healing and care, we could break that cycle. As it is, we just ingrain it even deeper.

    I’ve known about Quakerism for a while now. Last night me and my sister were finding old songs from primary school, a Baptist church school. We’ve never been religious, but last night, singing those songs, I felt like I wanted something to be able to turn to. I don’t know what it was really. But I started looking more into quakers and when I found your video I got excited. I used to watch your videos about disability and I didn’t know you were a Quaker. I subscribed again today. I’m really thinking about becoming a Quaker, although the meetings near me don’t have children’s meetings, or if they do, they’re only once a month. I’m 14 in April. Is there a way to worship at home? Or can you join the adults meetings at 13? I’m curious. I’d love to hear what you have to say :)
    Edit: just got to the part about the afterlife. My dad died 3 months ago and since then I finally figured out what I think of the afterlife. I don’t like the idea of your family ‘watching over you’. I had a dream where Daddy had taken me, my mum and sister into his world. It was a copy of ours, with everyone in it. He lives among us. He sees us, and can interact with us, it just doesn’t work the other way around. He can also visit whoever he wants, not just his family. He can visit friends in America who he’d never met, he can meet Steve Jobs, who he really liked as he’s an ex IT technician. He can do whatever he wants. And every so often, he’ll leave us a white feather. Grandma always told us that when you see a white feather, it means someone is watching over you. Before, it was Granddad, who died when I was 5. Now, it is Daddy. He always believed in the white feathers, so I believe he leaves them for us. The day he died, we saw a massive one, and 2 smaller ones. If that’s not a sign, I don’t know what is. I don’t know if this fits into Quakerism at all, but the religion seems like it’s a lot up to interpretation. That’s what I’d seen in my dream, so that’s my interpretation. I hope that made sense :)

    I think many people would vehemently disagree with the souls not having genders thing, not from a theological perspective, but from a personal one. Personally I think the gendered nature of souls varies from soul to soul, some souls have no gender, some have a definite one, some have more.
    That would very much result in the kind of strong feelings, broad feelings, and apathy, we observe about the subject here in life.

    As far as I can figure out, buddhism does not see all people as equals. I believe it considers men to be of a higher status than women, so it advocates a society based on patriarchy. I might be wrong, though. Im not buddhist and my knowledge about this is pretty basic.

    I've just thought of a question, I'm thinking of visiting a Quaker meeting when COVID-19 settles down and I have a friend who is also interested in visiting who is Polyamorous. Are Quakers typically accepting of that do you know?

    • @youdontneedtoknowthis.2031
      @youdontneedtoknowthis.2031 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I would think so. They say that they accept everyone and they don't judge people, so they should be nice.

      I know it’s been a long time since you asked this, so you probably already know, but if you or anyone else are/is still unsure: At 53:39 she says that there are actually polyamorous Quakers, so yes.

    What do quakers feel about soliders I'm going to the national guard and also interested in quakerism I will be a medic does that change the opinion in the eyes of quakers

    • @jamiel6005
      @jamiel6005 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      most quakers became medics during wartime, although many only did so because they were conscripted. War is considered one of the worst and most morally wrong things that can happen, and if you’re joining to support war, Quakerism is firmly against this. If you are however joining to prevent more unnecessary deaths, and would treat an ‘enemy’ soldier as an equal to a soldier from your nation, then there may be more leeway. If you would allow a soldier to die because he is not on your side, that would be considered wrong. If you’re passionate about medicine, maybe join an ambulance service, or emergency aid for developing nations. In the Quaker testimony of peace, it says ‘We totally oppose all wars, all preparation for war, all use of weapons and coercion by force, and all military alliances: no end could ever justify such means.’, ‘All bloody principles and practices we do utterly deny, with all outward wars, and strife, and fightings with outward weapons, for any end, or under any pretence whatsoever, and this is our testimony to the whole world.’ and ‘the spirit of Christ which leads us into all Truth will never move us to fight and war against any man with outward weapons, neither for the kingdom of Christ, nor for the kingdoms of this world.’

      In the meetings I've been attending, people will say what they associate with. Some friends say, 'God,' some say, 'spirit,' the lifelong Quakers in my group tend to list many names so that they're words identify with more people. It moreso is the recognition that whatever entity you believe in (such as a deity, energy, or the universe itself) lives inside every one and every thing.

    That nurse example is philosophically problematic if you believe that an unborn child (whether from conception or further along the pregnancy is a living human being) as many do, that's the equivalent of saying 'Nobody judges me for not wanting to murder somebody, so I don't have the right to judge somebody who does murder people'. The ethical debate has to be about at what point we consider a new human being to be a human being for some people that's at conception, for some people it's when they can feel pain, for some people it's not until birth. And that's definitely a debate that can be had. But if you believe something to be immoral you absolutely have the right to object to other people doing it when there actions affect others. E.g. in your swearing example you might not object to somebody saying 'that's f***ig brilliant' (even if you wouldn't say it yourself) but you probably would object to someone calling you a 'c**t' because at that point they're directing it at you someone who's offended by it. But of course swearing is a lot less consequential than ending another human beings life.

      The Quaker website says that some of their members find God/divinity/whatever in "nature religions" aka Paganism. Since Witchcraft is a pagan tradition with strong roots in nature, I think they'd be accepting.

    The going out of your way to not offend people I would have a hard time with. I tend to offend people because I am incredibly blunt and honest and if you are wrong about something that I know facts about, I can't just let that slide. Like if someone tells me that vaccines cause autism. I'm going to try not to make the person feel stupid, but I'm going to let them know that the study that started that entire movement was complete bunk and the Dr who did the study lost his board certification over it.

    In terms of the environmental guilt: I'm not sure how much of a help this will be, but the effect any one individual has on the environment is incredibly incredibly small. The reason we are in such a crisis at the moment is due to the practices of mega corporations, 100 of which are responsible for 72% of carbon emissions. In this case, I believe that the most beneficial things individuals can actually do to help the environment is less about restricting our own lives but putting pressure on corporations via strikes/protests, investing in smaller more ethical businesses, and pressuring politicians to pass stricter regulations
