Plenty of song lyrics sound awkward without music behind them but his sound like poetry. Such a testament to great songwriting that the lyrics can stand on their own too 10/10
even better sometimes for deep dives to recite lyrics rather than sing them to focus on what it really means especially for this song where the tone and vibes of the song is kind of a misdirect.
Hozier is a poet who just happens to have one of the most sublime voices too. The fact that he can make such grotesque subject matter sound this seductive is a testament to his many talents.
Bestie let me tell you, when we read it in class back in grade 12, I whipped around in my desk to face my (now ex) bf and say, word for word "Hozier would write a song about this. Mark my words. It's only a matter of time if he hasnt already." During the depth of the pandemic. And here we are.
@pn5894 and, in response to Hozier writing about this pamphlet, highschool teachers rejoice that students are exposed to a catchy, fun, informative song about what they may have struggled to convey.
Honey, don’t kid yourself. This frustration has been many generations. As a child of the 60s, I have been fighting my whole life for people to wake the F up. I love the younger generation, because they are finally in a position in time to do something about it. My generation was just a whisper.
@@ArtfulShelley That frustration has been with every young generation, I recon. Rebellion against their elders is a common theme for the young, just as is the settling down and the realization that not all that wants good, achieves good.
My mom’s an English teacher and some of her students chose Hozier’s lyrics as a topic of their Extended Essays. Not only did she make me meet this kids to help them out with their work being one of the biggest Hozier fans, but also became a fan of his work herself. Now she keeps telling her new batch of students to analyse Hozier’s works.
I almost used this song's lyrics as a mentor text for "A Modest Proposal," and I think I will the next time I teach it, so know there's at least one haha
As a 20something in America, this song was very cartharic. I know it's not about us but we really are that close to eating our young here while at the same time taking rights away to ensure there are enough young to feed to these billionaires. I have such little hope for mine or my generation's future but songs like this can inspire anger and hope in us. Our only chance is to change things as we come into power and I can only hope it happens sooner than later.
the young generation come into power and not fall into the same traps as the generation previous because the system sure as hell tries to make sure the cycle continues
Life was never fair throughout history and it feels like it will never be, the rich rulers are too powerful to be taken down and everyone abuses the power they receive
since we are gracefully on a hozier run.. bring the beautiful man back to officially lyrically breakdown his song from eden cause [chefs kiss]. oh he so precious.
him reading his lyrics is just as beautiful as him singing it. this man has a gift. the most beautiful voice and the most powerful words. he's incredibly talented AND he's 6'6". god definitely has her favorites.
I definitely believe this song can be applied to the current situation about SOGI in the public school system. Children are being used as fighting points for homophobia and transphobia under the guise of "protecting them" when its really a guise to promote hateful rhetoric. Same could be said for the anti-abortion laws in the states. This man is a genius
exactly! i thought that same thing when i first listened and i love when artists are aware of-and actively incorporate these works into their works. hozier is awesome
He is a very gifted musician, but he is also a true poet. Hearing him read his lyrics sounds so ethereal... He has such an enriching reading-voice! ...
Thank you, Andrew for clarifying those lyrics 😆 Would've never, ever been able to decipher piece by piece in the way you broke it down. Appreciate you ;*)
What really impress me most about Hozier is that he is still so young but is so reflective and wise. We usually associate wisdom with age and life experience. And he is always genuine, kind and humble. But at the same time has the courage and honesty to stand up for what he believes in and expresses his beliefs in words, deeds, and music. He is a walking example for his values. There are people who don't like him and mock his lyrics. But these people can criticise all they like. One thing they can never accuse him of is him being a phoney or hypocrite. I don't just love the guy. I respect him as a person.
I love how he links classics like A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift to the current political landscape in such a creative way!! I so admire his gifts!!
Couldn't help but think about Jonathan's Swift's A Modest Proposal since I heard the song! And Hozier mentioned the satirical essay by the end of the video!
I appreciate your explanation so much! I'm at a loss with poetry. I've tried for decades and I guess I'm just dense. Thank you truly for the interpretation ❤
I have such admiration for his abilities this is why we need as humans music and art lyric and prose for those of us who can feel compassion for others and understand that we all need to thrive and be equals
When I listen to this song I always think of an ancient insatiable being softly humming to mask grotesque things it says, luring the world to feed it violence and chaos which are its sustenance. It thrives when we fall
You've thrown the worst fear That can ever be hurled Fear to bring children Into the world For threatening my baby Unborn and unnamed You ain't worth the blood That runs in your veins ~ Bob Dylan, Masters of War
I’m fortunate to feel the kindness of Ireland and such right now as a student but yes for those working and foreign trying to make money here too you can feel sometimes the cruelty and exploitation. That even in this situation where I expunged most of my savings and am unemployed i still have a roof over my head and I’m not sharing one room with six other people. These are really insane unseen problems that get pushed to the side because the world is swelling with refugees trying to find a better life but those are coming into a place they barely know the language and is such a not colonial act but a great changing and forcing of western culture currency to have access to resources and basic need
This song is so relevant now..I think of the children of Gaza when I listen to it ..their lives cut short brutally..simply disposable worthless pawns to politicians that care about only their own gains
Dear genius please don't let go of this man until he has explained his every single song/poem
for real
He talking about Would That I would make my whole day
I NEED a genius for Someone New
I would pay so much for this

I want an audiobook of hozier just reading his song lyrics like a poem book
pretty sure there are some videos up on youtube where he recites poetry, not his song lyrics but some other stuff
Hozier if you ever look at this comment section… THIS PLEASE!!
Yes
I mean I'll take him reading anything, a cake recipe, I'm good
I even wouldn't mind hearing him read my groceries list, he would make it sound romantic
i really never expected a modest proposal to be turned into a song but i'm glad this man did it
