That was a recurring bit in Dave’s late NBC/early CBS days. It was kind of clear what they were doing if you watched the show a lot-they would have guests on the show go out in the audience and record them “standing up and taking a bow.” After they banked a lot of those, they’d do one episode where Dave introduced all the celebrities in the audience throughout the entire night so it seemed like this one night had a star-packed audience. The thing was, I think Dave enjoyed the gag because it was a prank on his actual audience. I remember one night when he did this and he commented on how much he enjoyed the audience members frantically looking for the celebrity he was introducing because even after three or four times they weren’t picking up on the fact that the stats were on tape.
There’s a non-circulating tape from Late Show where Conan, having wrapped up his two-segment chat with Dave, walks to the front row and sits down for another Celebrity Audience taping.
@@adamnedeff3102 I happened to be in the audience for this show and it definitely was a prank on us. However, I seem to remember that we figured it was a gag the first time he did it, so each successive time the reaction wasn’t as big. (It’s been over 30 years now, but I think the first celebrity Dave named might have been Steve Martin. Everyone got excited looking for him, but when we realized we’d been had, the “ooh and ahhs” gave way to laughter.) If you listen to the reaction, it had become somewhat muted when Dave named Kevin Costner, and even less for Walter Cronkite. I think by that point we were totally over the gag.
Hilarious! The whole thing. But, it is amazing that Kevin Costner was in the audience, AND Walter Cronkite?? I would love to know if that actually happened or if they were planted there for a bit. Happy New Year! Thanks Dave and Team!
I’ve been watching these clips for days. They’ve really helped my holiday season feel merry. Happy new year to us all.
5:27 - "You don't understand; if we didn't use that tonight, we could never use it." - Classic DAVE!
Thanks, Paul, you've inspired me. Last New Year I didn't do squat.
Happy New Year, everyone!! 🎉
Well, that's an odd way to ring in the new year. Thanks, Dave, Paul, and everyone else! Happy New Year!
Cool that Kevin Costner and Walter Cronkite were in the audience. Happy New Year, '93 seems like yesterday, but it's not!

@@adamnedeff3102And in one such segment, Paul himself was in the taped audience. Which confused the live Paul even more.

@@adamnedeff3102 shh you're ruining the magic. Hehe.
I plan on squatting for New Year's 🤭🙋☮️ Geez, I miss this silliness 😂😂
I got my Letterman t shirt in the mail just in time to take it on my first cruise ! Dave you are a national treasure.
I use to get the Rembrandts confused with the proclaimers(500 miles)
Happy new year to you too!
Calvert is just as funny 30 years later.
Squat your way to success. Timely bowel movements for everyone!🙂
Great job by Kenny Aronoff !!!
Is Paul’s special streaming anywhere?🎉
Those were the days. Nobody squats for New Year’s Eve anymore! That’s what’s wrong with this country

Happy new year
I didn't know Kenny Aronoff was a sub drummer for Anton fig?!? Did that happened more than once?
There's one New Years Eve theme I would love to see posted here, the 12/29/89 show. It was the last show of the 1980s and the last of the old set.
Bet Paul couldn't hold that squat for so long these days. But probably neither could I or you, or you, or you...
Where does the time go?
We all spent it, it’s sitting in a drawer someplace.
@taxesdeathandtrouble.1886 yes, with the crusty socks.
All those years ago...sigh...
❤🎉🕺👌🙏🎊👋
I remember reading somewhere that, Dave is unable to pop a squat.
Hey Letterman! Release the damn Billy Bob Thornton interviews
❤🎉🎊🙏👌🕺
See everyone… Dave used to be funny… those were the days!
