At my school, the twats have the time and money spent on them which means I don’t get to do my Advanced Higher Physics.

I have been trying to figure out why my P7 son has been given videos to watch during COVID home schooling that are way below his maturity level, more suited to 5 years olds. This talk explains so much, I am very grateful to not be alone in seeing the gradual dumbing-down and diluting of opportunities to learn and grow, investigate and innovate - not just in teaching terms but in terms of lighting the fire in the learner's imagination. Surely good little solider learners are not going to help progress the country's ability to be the leading world class inventors and entrepreneurs of yesteryears? Conformity is one thing, it makes governing less messy, but in the long term, what does it help to ignore the endless possibilities in those young minds which should be encouraged, not suppressed? Time for a whole new rethink, in my opinion.

The subtitles are wrong. The irony of being Scottish. No one understands us.

I totally agree with him, the schooling system here actually drives pupils away from wanting to learn, as opposed to just being there for the sake of it. I know that's not just for Scottish schools and most pupils don't want to be at school regardless, however I do understand the rigidity of the Scottish schooling system is going to be its downfall.

I remember all the way back in Elementary School (Basically from ages 5-10 in America) when the librarians of the school told me not to read a book because it had, "Too many pictures", then told me the next one I chose was, "Too advanced and had too many words.". The books I chose were "Eyewitness Books: Sharks" and "Warriors: Into the Wild". Both fairly advanced books, in terms of the information, for a seven-year-old.
Now, I am 18 and I am a slow reader. I still enjoy it...but I don't actually read as much as I probably should. I am trying to get better and to read more about what interests me. (Celtic Historia, Animals, Herbology/Botany, Medicine, Creative Writing, Art, Music theory, and so much more.) I really hope the school didn't kill it too much for me to be a good reader.

Now I understand something that's been bothering me for years. In the 60s when I was in school conservatism and acceptable behavior was important. Now all Scottish schools are about accepting anything. From right to left but whatever it is conformity is required. Now I live in the US. We don't have to agree.

Unfortunately, the state of Scottish education has only gotten worse since this talk.
Diversity of thought (which is the type of diversity he is on about) is not something the ruling party in Scotland wants, in fact it is absolutely opposed to that...

    • @mikeyteee95

What do you mean the "3rd best in Scotland"? Do you mean that's where it ranks in terms of exam results?
The point of this talk is that exam results are not the most important thing in schools, as wealthier children are always going to perform better than poorer children. This is why he is saying we should put more focus on how to meet children's care needs before worrying about exam results.

Walt Kovacs no I’m meaning the facility’s and the care brought into it see my school is very new building and as the staff moved to the school we have brought forward how we treat each other as pupil and teacher relationships see my school focuses on preparing us mentally for the world and they do it in a nice and orderly manor I am not at all saying it’s the 3rd best in exams results it’s the care and facility’s what my school holds.

@@thewither3144 Pehaps the education system should concentrate on teaching kids the basics.
