Remembering Talat Mahmood: "Mohabbat Hi Na Jo Samjhe" - Parchhain (1953)

- What a coincidence that exactly 10 months to the day separates two legendary singers' centenary milestones this year. Talat Mahmood's velvety vibrato-filled vocals went against the conventional wisdom of his time, and yet took the music scene by storm. His brand of emotion was delicate, understated, and refined, never a hair out of place - and yet, crushingly earnest and capable of moving you to tears. As the world becomes noisier and more exhibitionist, the best of his finely chiseled melodies remain a sorely needed breath of fresh air.
Tempted at first to share a lesser-heard song of his, I eventually opted for this much better-known classic. While Krishan Bihari "Noor" Lakhnavi's nuanced lyrics allude to the subtle differences between shades of love, composer C. Ramchandra takes to his much-beloved Raga Bageshri (a la "Jaag Dard-e-Ishq" or "Radha Na Bole") for this composition (curiously set in the Teentaal theka usually reserved for more overtly classically-based songs).
One of my fondest musical memories is a 2008 Delhi performance dedicated exclusively to Talat Mahmood organized by Shikha Biswas Vohra, whose father maestro Anil Biswas played a pivotal role in recognizing the Talat Mahmood value proposition and realizing its full potential.
Some of you reading this may wonder that all I could offer was a single song on such a momentous occasion - and I really have no good answer, especially considering how prominent he was among the pantheon of popular singers I grew up listening to. Going forward, however, I am resolved to share more of my favorites from this unique singer's exquisite anthology.
