I mean, this is the best series ever played, right? For me at least, this blew Joseph vs Greentea out of the water, not just in terms of level of play, but how entertaining it was. Fractal looks like he's having the time of his life, and Dog seems super chilled even while getting back-to-back killscreen tetrises. Also, loved the sportsmanship, big respect for Dog for taking the loss graciously after playing a series that would beat just about any other player on just about any other day. Congrats Fractal!
@@NollyRS In terms of level of play, obviously that is true. In terms of entertainment though, I'd still rank that one near the top, just because of how exciting it was, the players' personalities, etc. Fractal actually reminds me of Greentea quite a lot - he always seems like he's super happy to be there, and can be quite emotive in tournament play. Maybe that's why I always find myself rooting for him.
@@Arrica101 The elimination of the kill screen as a hard deadline is a really weird development for the game as a competition. Just a couple years ago, if one player got to 29 with a 1.3M, and another player transitioned with like 900k or smth, the 1.3 player would basically be guaranteed to win. But now because of how the scoring scales on post 29 levels and the possibility of infinite chase-downs, there's less reward for risky play. Dog takes tons of risks and it usually pays off because his spatial recognition is superb, allowing him to have multiple solutions for whatever issues he is facing. Level 29+ has little room for error though and Fractal's safety first strategy won due to that.
Rolling technique really changes everything. So proud to witness all developments in past 6 years. New Legend always appear out of nowhere .... and now WR goes up to 4M !!!

Versus a “Double Kill Screen”? Where at some point post-29 there is a second kill screen with pieces falling at an even faster rate? Why not just continue the in-game progression of faster drop rates (that arguably inspired Rolling in the first place…)? What do you think?
19:07 struggling not to say "monkaS" again These games are so nuts and being live adds that hype right back in. I cannot BELIEVE that dig Fractal went through!
Yeah my power rankings would be something like this 1. PixelAndy (if controller is fixed) 2. Fractal 3. Dog 4. Huff AlexT is the most likely to join this list if he improves his rolling
Bro the legendary double rollover game had a 57 piece drought at level 19-21 that both weathered like champions. Imagine how the game has evolved to where that is a mere inconvenience to these guys
The level of precision and accuracy on placing the blocks with high efficient disaster coverup. It's indeed the best quality of the game. The competition is put to a very high challenge.
About line cap: here is a simple suggestion that may lower or even negate the need to use such a tool: simply, at kill-screen, change the scoring method: double the points for a triple, and double (or even triple) the points for a Tetris. (Or maybe use some other multipliers)
Your rule makes WAYYY MORE SENSE than a line cap - Reward the gameplay style you want instead of disallowing styles you don’t want. What about when players get 60+ line droughts or much longer droughts Post-29? Although somewhat uncommon, it’s still something to consider. If we add a line cap, that would prevent scalers (line-out players like Fractal) from reaping the benefits of their efforts in post-29 line drought situations, which would be unfair, right? Whereas implementing an increased points multipliers for post-29 Tetrises, for example, will lead more-aggressive players to continue their strive for better aggro play post-29 because of the much larger Tetris benefits, while players like Fractal will naturally tend towards more aggressive gameplay due to the much larger Tetris benefits being awarded, too, and BOOM! There you have it, culture that promotes aggressive gameplay.
I remember watching Joseph Salee back in the hypertap days. Hilarious how an innovation in tapping technique has made post kill screen viable for more players. Edit: just watched Fractal go to Level 60 and I can see why some people want a line limit. If more and more players are able to survive on kill screen, the game will devolve into a stamina game and the importance of taking risks will become non-existent.
No line cap! Dint do it! You don’t have incredible moments like this! The amount of consistency and concentration needed for chase downs is crazy! Noooo line cap!!!
Seems like Fractal is gonna win CTWC, and then we'll see about adding a line cap in 2023? I think he deserves to be world champ this year for completely breaking the game, but afterward I would love to see rule changes that reward aggressive play.
It's probably time for CTWC to implement some kind of rule like tiebreaks in tennis. Otherwise there's a risk games in this year's tournament can drag out for a very long time, and that will probably damage the growth of the game. I'd suggest something like first to rollover the score wins automatically. Taking nothing away from Fractal here because his consistency a digging ability might be best in the world right now, but watching players line it out on level 29 will get boring to viewers very quickly. Tetrises on killscreen are mega to witness and I think the organizers of tournaments need to reward players for taking the risk.
Just to add, this suggestion is looking forward into the future. With the rate players are progressing with their rolling technique, I don't think it will be too long before we have dozens of players capable of lining out for an extended period on killscreen. Maybe CTWC this year should stay as is, but CTWC 2023 should seriously think about it if this year's tournament has some games drag out for a while.
We are looking to possibly test a linecap-ish solution in Masters for September (basically a twice-as-fast killscreen on level 39 or 49.) But that would be just a one-month trial. Probably too early to permanently mess with Tetris, but in 2023 almost certainly.
I think it wouldn’t be boring to see people play live for hours and hours and hours after all those type of players who can do that will eventually become really good at making Tetris’s all the time too. You can’t make a rule for less play.. The. it just becomes a talent match for your rule
Just by seeing total video time of 53 mintues I knew this will be intense. But I never could have expected such brilliance as Game 2. Successful 400k points chasedown, double rollover and a bunch world records. Anyone open to listing all records broken?

And here we have the announcer shouting and yelling the whole time with everybody else panicking and yelling it’s quite an accomplishment for these 2GOATS
Also note, both are screenlooking and having a casual conversation with eachother from time to time, while in an environment that was already noisy, even without Vandy being hype.
I’ll be honest and say I was going for Dog as he always impresses me but fractal. Wow. Even though he had a hiccup and lost a game, I don’t think anyone was beating him this time, he was on fire. Well played. Thoroughly enjoyed this match. Keep em coming! 👏
Dog has better skills and techniques, but fractal outstrategized dog by playing safely post lv29. I believe if dog adapts this kind of playstyle he can still win the tournament
Yea please no line cap any time soon, it's just too fun watching the test of endurence. When games consistently drag on for 30 minutes after roll over maybe then will need it?
Very cool that they are scoring this high, but it's not very fun/exciting to watch someone single/double out a chase down of 400k+. Tetris competitions need some sort of rule that keeps competitors aggressive with their scoring.
this is incredible - probably the greatest chasedown I can think of in Tetris, and could probably compare favorably to other big competitive games too.
What happened in round two showed us that when somebody tops out, there has to be a time limit for the other player to catch up in live tournaments too, just like in Tetris Effect. The game is called Tetris and going for Tetrises even in kill screen should be rewarded. Current format encourages players to line out and since most pros can easily play kill screen these days, not having a time limit kills the joy a little bit.
And then the CTWC happened that year. The final round, game three. This was a 43-60, but the CTWC match was a 73-69. Which means the combined level, 103 here, was 142 there.
The two best heavyweights going at it! Awesome…. Great job guys. Dog’s Tetris-ing in the After Life screens is unreal and Fractals consistency and digs are insane. (Also, anyone else have the feeling Joseph is secretly getting ready for a rolling comeback?)
@@mukburbur696 Not surprising, the lack of line caps has made obsolete the playstyle that he invested all his time into honing. In that situation, I wouldn't be too motivated either.
Fractal is a class player but man there needs to be a line limit brought in. Watching a chase down with doubles and singles for 180 lines is pretty tedius now that we are so used to seeing 29 play. It won but I will always support Dog more as he is constantly going for the Tetris, which makes it so much more exciting to watch.
I agree dog should win that 100%, no offence to Fractal I know why he does it but the game need to be entertaining also which dog understand. We can't have a bunch of cowards singling forever to catch up.
what about a mod that makes it about 100 lines of level 29 speed then a speed increase so that pieces drop 2 rows per frame?? a killscreen plus if you will?
@@Whale_Tales They could take an average time past kill screen and come up with a time limit that is reasonable. That way players would be more pushed to hard drop pieces also early to maximize score before timer is out. Which will help to make level 18 more exciting to watch as well. Something to think about which solution would be most fun for players also at the different stages as well as watching for viewers.
@vandweller: love your work. Missed you when didn't comment the last couple of CTMs. Maybe consider getting a mute button if you need to cough or sneeze? And also sell merchandise to capitalize of CTM's success!
By the time I knew I needed to cough, it was already happening. Hopefully it's not too distracting for you. I did my best to get through it with minimal annoyances. Also, I wasn't sick, just in case people thought I was spreading germs. I had had Covid a couple weeks prior, and had some residual hoarseness. It was aggravated by lack of sleep that weekend and doing a lot of talking and shouting the day before. But I was perfectly healthy and non-contagious.
All these people mad at Fractal and wanting artificial limits put in place probably can't even last past level 12 or 13. Try to play at even level 18 or 19 and last, _then_ come back and make those arguments. FWIW, I dearly _love_ 20g speed in Tetris 99, and even I couldn't last at 18/19 on NES, so I say just let it rock.
Nestris can only track 6 digits of score. Since score is saved in base-16 once score exceeds F00,000 (16,000,000 in decimal) it rolls over to 000,000 cause it can’t display 1,000,000
imagine if the last tetris match you watched was before rolling was implemented and then you randomly decided to watch a match and this was the video you cilcked. also idk why but when ever dog is playing i cant do anything but watch his board
Can someone explain rollover to me? I dont watch these championship videos regularly so i cant put my finger on it exactly unfortunately. Thanks in advance
Dog is superior player, fractal plays so safe and boring and is the reason they need a chase down timer of max 1 minute. When dog played so good and did Tetrises non-stop being chased down forever by someone doing singles and doubles is ZZzzz... Good game though but Dog won in my eyes, time to change the rules before this turn into a snooze to watch.
I gotta agree. Top talent, no doubt, but as a spectator sport, its way more exciting seeing risks taken at that level. I would imagine that, for top tier players, singling and doubling indefinitely after 29 is going to be- well not trivial- but much more common. Part of the appeal of CT (in previous times) is that eventually there is an end (29) so you have to take risks and play optimally. Rolling has done away with that. It allows for much slopier/unoptimized stacking with a greater chance for recovery. It is what it is, but I do find my interest waning with these types of finishes. I don't blame the player- if I were in Fractals shoes, I'd probably do the same. But Dog is way more exciting to play. I think they should hard cap at level 39.
Playing a game named Tetris without attempting any Tetrises!! What the fuck dude!! Playing singles all the time seems kinda dull, like there's no fun or fairness in it! NO HONOR!! Props to dog for keeping the game exciting!!

@@peterboneg Yeah it's sad evolution right now. We also have the dying of the old techniques since they can't compete at all with rolling.
what about a mod that makes it about 100 lines of level 29 speed then a speed increase so that pieces drop 2 rows per frame?? a killscreen plus if you will?
@@Whale_Tales They could take an average time past kill screen and come up with a time limit that is reasonable. That way players would be more pushed to hard drop pieces also early to maximize score before timer is out. Which will help to make level 18 more exciting to watch as well. Something to think about which solution would be most fun for players also at the different stages as well as watching for viewers.
The second match was the best match ever i have seen.
this shows how important it is for a man to last long.
Dog is the first player I saw pull off setting up tetrises deep into the kill screen.
The Tortoise and the Hare
Jonash is a legend. And if he didnot retire, the legend will be killed be lots of young player now
Jonas died bro
@vandweller: love your work. Missed you when didn't comment the last couple of CTMs. Maybe consider getting a mute button if you need to cough or sneeze? And also sell merchandise to capitalize of CTM's success!
We're glad he's back too. And we sell merch! merch.streamelements.com/monthlytetris
@@vandypants Doesn't bother me! I'd like to second that I missed your commentary too!
Vandy was great!
@@vandypants I didn't mean to imply you were contagious or not well.
That chasedown was legendary, holy shit.
I'm happy from NES Tetris!
Is there not a killing screen anymore?
The players do the killing now. Our recent tournaments feature a double speed killscreen inserted at level 49/39
‘fractal with the live curse words’ :p
You can't even blame Dog for losing. Who rolls over AND loses?? Dog, apparently.
One is an SP500 type of person, the other is AMC type of person
"LET'S FUCKING GO!" - fractal161
Double rollover. Wow!
Amazing match. What is a rollover?
Nestris can only track 6 digits of score. Since score is saved in base-16 once score exceeds F00,000 (16,000,000 in decimal) it rolls over to 000,000 cause it can’t display 1,000,000
@@annabellethorpe2542 thank you
When Fractal plays no lead is safe :P
Ну супер игра!фрактал молодец,но Догу просто немного не повезло.Не огорчайся,парень!Ты крут!
"or whatever year you're in."
what does that even mean vandy
imagine if the last tetris match you watched was before rolling was implemented and then you randomly decided to watch a match and this was the video you cilcked.
also idk why but when ever dog is playing i cant do anything but watch his board
I love seeing that this was live, but not going to lie, I miss the Flexstyle music.
Can someone explain rollover to me? I dont watch these championship videos regularly so i cant put my finger on it exactly unfortunately. Thanks in advance
scoring over 1.6 million resets the score counter to zero, as the game can't store a higher score
Holy shit how many world records did game 2 smash?
Do they always get the same tetiminoes to start? Is the whole block sequence the same?
Yes! We use a special patch to make sure both players in Masters receive the same piece sequence.
ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME
Это просто Космос что вытворяют эти ребята
It's just Space what these guys are doing
Amazing players! Congratz!
When players score 200+ lines after "killscreen" and 600,000+ points after "maxout", do those terms still mean anything!!
Fractal was proving a point that they needed a double kill screen
Bruh I just searched Tetris since 2016 after the boom Tetris for Jeff meme. Gotdamn these kids are absolutely crazy. Level 60?????
Say goodbye to every past record :)))
IDK why but fractal have some greentea energy
🐐 vs 🐐
Holy Cr*p these guys are amazing!!
Fractal is greentea rolling mode
I think that in order to limit time, top level matches should be played on level 19 starts
The mistake ripped Fractal on 41:54 and the same had Dog on 52:05
Playing a game named Tetris without attempting any Tetrises!! What the fuck dude!!
Playing singles all the time seems kinda dull, like there's no fun or fairness in it! NO HONOR!!
Props to dog for keeping the game exciting!!
Fractal new champion 🏆
