Another important thing that really kept Nintendo afloat was the 3DS. And clearly, they see that they excel in that market. Now that games can be consolidated all under Switch, we're going to get more quality games because resources aren't all over the place between two consoles. And it really looks like Nintendo and their developers put out their best on 3DS and were more conservative in several approaches with Wii U.
Though the 3ds might have been one of the reasons of the wii Us downfall. They were so concentrated on saving the 3DS that the wii U's first couple years were shit. They saved it and tried to save the wii U starting in late 2014 but by then it was too late and the ps4 was out dashing hopes for third party ports.
ever since they went into handhelds, the majority of their sales came from the cheaper option. Look back at 2010's financial report, and you'll see the DS makes up around 60% of their revenue.
Even though the Wii u didn't sell well, it had some really good games like 3D world, smash bros and Mario maker. Nintendo should just stop being dumb and port them over to the switch. As well as the virtual console.
They could port Mario maker but have it be controlled by a controller while in the dock and touchscreen while in portable mode it would just more coding to do
Screaming Saiyan about mario maker, i dont wanna ruin the switch screen. I dont think the switch has a touch resistant layer like the 3ds. Maybe have the building be done by controller only?
Yet it still failed, which proves that it's not the quality that sells the console but rather strong launch titles and continual 3rd/1st party support !
Stupidadi It tried being 1 of the best systems out there. It’s a good system and I’ve owned mine since when I was in high school, back in 2014. Just like the GameCube, good system but very underrated.
It was built poorly, so 3rd parties had a hard time making games for it. This in turn lead to bad ports. People wouldn't buy games on the WiiU if they had the other console because the games would be better on the the other console due to the bad ports. This lead 3rd parties to abandon the WiiU. Nintendo also didn't have the greatest games on the WiiU. Yes, Mario 3D World, Smash 4, Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong, Beyonetta, Splatoon, but that's sort of it. Nintendo started shifting their focus to the 3DS and during the last one or two years of the WiiU's life, the switch. You got games like Mario Tennis and Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival instead of games that felt like a true, only-possible-on-console experience. The console was fun, cute, quirky, but hard to build games for.
It does. Specially because Nintendo traditionally made consoles with different names. It was always "Nintendo Something" or "something Nintendo", Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Gamecube, Nintendo Wii... And then "WiiU?" not to mention the original Wii was still an improvement in every way in relation to the previous generation, the WiiU simply isn't, it actually loses to the Xbox 360 in some ways..
lol 100M units? Alright Nintendo I am a huge fan, but your prediction of 100M units was a wee bit off... just a wee bit off.. Or should I say, *Wii* bit off! OHHHH--- Yeaaahhh I'm sorry...
The NX name was shown from a slide at the Nintendo press conference with DeNA back in 2015. The media jumped the gun and began to report that Nintendo is working on their next gen console(even though it was not announced) and would abandon the Wii U. In my opinion, that broke the camel's back.
They said "broke the camals back" not that it was the beginning. And to an extent it was true. With the NX it was either compared as a new wii u(due to the leaks) or was deemed more relevant. The wii u failed but it had its moments but with the switch all those moments were forgotten
Such a shame that the Wii U didn't sell well. I really loved it and it introduced me and many gamers to a brand new IP that is Splatoon. For me, the Wii U will forever be one of my favorite consoles of all-time.
Agreed. The Wii U Gamepad was a fun controller to use and in terms of mapping and inventory management, it helped a lot and I couldn't play Lego City Undercover, the main Zelda games, Paper Mario: Color Splash, and others without it. It felt like an all-in-one console for me, and I liked it. Not to mention that it introduced some of the best games (imo) in that generation, including Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros for Wii U, Yoshi's Woolly World, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, Super Mario Maker, Nintendo Land, and many others while Xbox One and PS4 only had third-party games, the majority of which didn't grab me as much aside from a few such as Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, Dragon Quest Builders, and World of Final Fantasy. I'll admit that the Wii U didn't reach the potential of most previous consoles, but at the end of the day it's still good (and underrated) Nintendo console and I refuse to take it back.
CF-105 Was it necessary of you to be harsh, CF-105? Really disappointing of you. The Wii U may not have sold well, but people liked it. Plus, Splatoon is still popular thanks to the sequel on the Switch.
Nintendo's horrible relationship with TH-cam helped tremendously. Every single other company, Sony, Microsoft, etc, saw the benefits of having their consoles and games advertised for free on TH-cam. Not Nintendo though. No. Nintendo is the epitome of capitalism. If you gonna show our products and our footage, you pay us for that. It's ours, not yours. They took this to such as extreme, not only did they shoot themselves in the foot, it alienated an ENTIRE generation away from their products. People use TH-cam far more than TV these days. Only one company failed to realize that: Nintendo. And they paid the price for it. Don't get me wrong, I love Nintendo. But I must recognize fuck ups, and recognize them I shall.
And by doing so, Nintendo not only got their customers back, but their newest system (the Nintendo Switch), is also selling like hotcakes. Whether we agree with microtransactions and DLC, is a completely different topic altogether. For now, Nintendo have redeemed themselves in giving the costumers what they asked for, not what they *think* we want.
I have no clue what the hell you're talking about, especially when no one mentioned communism. If Japan lived in communism, it would never be the economy it is today. The fact that I mentioned the "epitome of capitalism", serves to show how greed and bad decisions took hold of the company, which ultimately led to the death of the Wii U. The point is, Nintendo was greedy, didn't listen to their own costumer base and decided to shoot themselves om the foot. They paid for it.
Both the n64 and Gamecube sold under expectation. Gamecube low sales figure forced Nintendo to think beyond the limits of how their next console should be. (Wii)
You didn't mention the most common hypothesis for why the Wii U failed: Nintendo failed to communicate properly and clearly what the Wii U actually is, to their largest Wii demographic (ie. the casual gamers, families, parents, etc.) The largest Wii demographic didn't really "get" what the Wii U actually was. Many probably thought it was just an external controller for the Wii, or some kind of rehashed/repackaged Wii. They didn't really understand that yes, it was an actual, new, next-gen console all of its own, rather than just being a slightly beefed-up Wii with a fancy new controller. Thus the vast majority of Wii users didn't really feel the need to get it. They already had a Wii, why would they purchase a new one (even if it did have some fancy new controller)? Nintendo did much better with the Switch, making it amply clear that yes, this is an entirely new "next-gen" console, not just a repackaged previous console. Completely changing the name, something that sounds quite simple, helps in this quite a lot.
I shake my head when ever I hear someone say that Nintendo was going to be the next Sega. You took it further, thinking they would end all together. The amount of money that Nintendo had compare to Sega, their financial situation is just night and day. Add the disaster of the 32x, Sega Saturn, and probably the Sega CD, while at the same time being a smaller company than Nintendo. Nintendo has enough money to go on while losing money for decades. Plus they made money on every system that they sold, their 1st party games sell a ton, and then there was the 3DS.
Nintendo could have plenty more of Wii Us and still have enough money to put out more consoles. They also don't sell systems at a loss, only the Wii U during the first year. Loss for the year would have to do more with R&D (for the Switch). The Amibos were an extra source of income, and if the sales dipped recently, they were still huge in 2014 for an extra source of income that's cheap to make. I looked up their year by year income. www.statista.com/statistics/216625/net-income-of-nintendo-since-2008/ Which doesn't even take into account how much more money Nintendo has in the bank compared to what Sega had. Nintendo has two years where they lost money, and that loss is less than the profit they made in the year 2011. Sega would've had a few years during the Genesis days where they made a profit, but not enough profit that would off set the bad decisions of bringing out addons like the 32x, Sega CD, and the bad sales of the Saturn and Dreamcast.
Yeah IKR. Nintendo still owns the most impactful franchises of the gaming history. Mario, Zelda, Pokemon (that one is big) etc. And the DS was selling very well.
Bernard Von Kronkenburger games can be rendered at higher resolution than 480p like Skyward Sword which ran at a sub HD resolution of 512p down scaled to 480p
Another big reason why the Wii U failed is because the marketing was shit. Nobody knew if it was an add-on or natural successor mostly due to the name and due to the games shown not really having much better graphics. This was compounded by a lackluster online. Which they still haven't fixed and I feel like it's only going to bite them in the ass later. This is why the switch is so much better the name is very different and the marketing showed what it was supposed to be very clearly. All your questions were answered in the one minute 30 second trailer whereas questions stayed pretty much until launch for the Wii U for some people
The name part really doesn't explain anything, the "PlayStation 2" sounds like a remodel of the original PlayStation, that didn't stop it from becoming the best selling console of all time.
It's still good and currently being used in Smash Bros Wii U. If your not good try it online in 'Team Battle'. And Smash Bros Wii U is being in alot of tournaments. The Wii U gamepad is useful you can set it as your own tv remote if your own tv remote been missing a few times. I doubt the haters on the Wii U.
Ngl the Wii U was pretty nostalgic back in the old days of Nintendo Because it had classics Like Nintendo land Zombie u Mario kart 8 ( original ) Mario bros u Mario 3D land Smash for Wii U Etc I’d blame the marketing
Interesting to note is that all the quarters Nintendo reported red numbers in where times when they heavily invested into new assets for the future. It's in stark contrast with sony who would sell off assets to report positive numbers for their reports. AND WHY WOULD NINTENDO STOP MAKING GAMES AND SYSTEMS WHEN THE 3DS IS THAT BIG? Jesus it's like people pick something they want to believe in and then never look at facts.
I'm playing gamecube games on my WiiU gamepad, until that can happen on the switch along with games worth having it for then i'm fine. Haters can suck it they're sleeping. But WiiU without homebrew i'd pass.
x7Votorious84x you can just get an original Wii with Homebrew for about 40$ bucks on offer up lol there's a bunch in my area . And they try to sell the Wii u for like 300$ like why the fuck would any one buy a Wii u now for over 100$ is beyond me lol it already lost support .
I got my WiiU for 140 with mario kart 8 and 3d world on craigslist. All i see is overpriced offers so i got lucky but if you find it cheap then why not get one. It plays wii games and just recently gamecube games are functional with the gamepad controls so you wont need to buy a GC controller. I missed out on the wii and wiiU gen so downloading tons of games for $6 a month cause of a VPN is worth it.
x7Votorious84x idk I wouldn't spend more then 100$ for the Wii u. to each there own but for me my PS3 still has comparable graphics to a Wii u so other then the exclusive Nintendo titles There is no reason for it , like I wanted it to try out the exclusive titles, that's why I looked them up but ppl are seriously trying to upsale it so bad it's crazy ,, and I have an Xbox one for current gen and a ps vita as well as a new 3ds XL . I'm not a fan boy of any one system I buy based on the deal I can get, and I haven't bought a console new since my PS3 it's best to wait for a good deal online . For what ppl are asking for a Wii u I'd rather just spend the money on a switch .
Yea i have all of those systems too and sometimes stop and think how i will have the time and attention span to finish games and thoroughly enjoy them which definitely hinders my desire for consoles like PS4 and switch. So i can understand but it was too good to pass up. I really need to uninstall Rocket league so i can clear up my back list.... 1 more game!
+Walther Penne Holy shit! Are you that ignorant? The Wii U is a great emulation machine, yes but really? First to have a fully functioning Xbox 360 emulator, can you be serious? All right let's start off with the basics, Emulation is an extremely taxing task for the Wii U and the fact you have the balls to say that the Wii U will be the first to have a proper Xbox 360 emulator shows how misinformed you are. It is impressive that it can run a Gamecube Emulator and can run Super Mario Sunshine in 60fps and what not, but fucking really? If there isn't a proper Xbox 360 emulator on the most powerful platform, what makes you think that the weakest console of the 8th generation can do it? Also, Super Mario Galaxy in 120fps?! Where the hell did you get that bullshit from lmao? Super Mario Galaxy is 4x more demanding than Super Mario Sunshine, and wouldn't that mean Sunshine would be able to run at 240fps? Think about it lmao. You're saying that it WILL be able to emulate pretty much every console behind it? Let's be 100% real here, yeah it is a little bit more powerful than Xbox 360 and PS3 but that doesn't mean it will be able to properly emulate the complex CPUs. It'd take years for the Wii U to even get PS3 games to even boot on it, let alone PROPERLY PLAY THE GAME. And the statements about the current-gen consoles, I agree with you somewhat. But your argument is a fallacy. Yeah, they were pretty underpowered when they first released. But when the Xbone and the PS4 came out, the Wii U was extremely underpowered compared to its competitors at the time. Please do some research before trying to state such retarded things.
that splatoon 2 gameplay hurts to watch. RUSH THE MIDDLE! PAINT! DONT SHOOT THE GROUND SHOOT FORWARD AND LET THE DROPS PAINT! AAGAGAAHAGAHGHAGH!!!! AND TURN ON MOTION CONTROLLS SO YOU CAN AIM BETTER
Rafia J.R. The switch can do wolfenstein 2 and doom and Skyrim, of course it can run GTA 5, plus the switch is more porwerfull than Xbox 360 and PS3 and GTA 5 first came out on those consoles.
So Doom, Wolfenstein 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda breath of the wild, STARDEW VALLEY, rocket league and Mario Kart 8 deluxe aren’t considered games? I haven’t even included the indie titles! Fucking Wii U fan.
As a Wii U fanboy, I do hear it out, I just looked at the stock for the Wii U, & seeing how unpopular the Wii U was just hurts me so bad, that it feels like Someone shot me with a beretta in the shoulder. Shit man, that hurts me so bad.
As much as I loved the Wii U, what hit me hardest is the memory storage space. Just 8GB for Basic and 32GB for Deluxe/Premium. And then they tried to promote 'Nintendo Network Premium/Deluxe Digital Promotion' in the first 2 years-purchase download content (to squeeze into such small capacity), earn £5/$5 once 500 points is reached.
I think the wiiU failed was the detachment of looking at ur tv screen and looking down at the gamepad. Breaking the immersion and it was uncomfortable physically on ur neck and eyes. We already do that with the 3DS. Perfect example of what games failed was kirbys color canvas game and star fox on the WiiU. What a horrible concept..
Nintendo left Brazil, the biggest gaming market in latin America. Perhaps It pushed the failling of the Wii u in a stronger way than the TH-cam strikes, but no one sems to talk about it when discussing the flop of the console
Read my comment please, there's an actual market for piracy in Brazil, very popular with the PS3, a little card you plugged in (you had to pay for it) and you could pirate any game that came out. I know people can pirate and buy things but there's gonna be countries with more pirates than any other country, and one of those countries is Brazil. Also just a note, yes, I should've worded that better, sorry about that.
DerpySnake Well, Sony is still working there with higher piracy numbers than When Nintendo was in the market. So I dont think It was all piracy fault. If It was, Nintendo should had left China as well..
Why do you think Nintendo would just vanish if they didnt' make consoles? They are for one in a much better financial situation than SEGA was. So there would be NO logical reason not to keep making games because it is a company after all, and those want to KEEP making money not stop making them. Other than that it was good video.
That isn't how that works. A company's net worth is not how much money it actually has. They were fine, but not "surviving for the next fifty years" fine. They had incredibly valuable IP that people still wanted and will probably continue to want. And they've had a string of several incredibly well-selling consoles over the past decade. And that is why they can afford to take losses.
I think the biggest thing Nintendo did wrong wth advertising the Wii U was only showing the controller. One ad talks all about the controller but never once shows a console, making people think it's another Wii accessory.
My reason not to buy Nintendo is they shutdown their online services to fast. I remember them releasing Pokemon Black 2 and they turned off the servers not even a year later.
Ever heared of Steam ? they just continue the online support for the Games which ran with Games for Windows Live. This could have been an option instead of closing the online service after not even 2 Years.
king of swag187 Actually the Wii U had a somewhat powerful GPU for the time, and quite alot of memory. What killed it was the weak as hell IBM CPU, that was just a slight evolution over the WIIs Broadway processor. And comparing it to a Iphone 7 is not really fair, seeing that the Iphone is a high-end piece of much more expensive tech, released many years after the Wii U
king of swag187 in terms of cpu power the iPhone 7 whoops the Wii u's ass but in terms of gpu power the iPhone 7 doesn't come close to the power of the Wii u's gpu
One important detail when it comes to "third party support" for the Wii U is that most of the games released to the Wii U were just ports of games that had already been released on 360/PS3/PC. Anyone who wanted to play those games had already played them. And several of the games that came to Wii U were games I really, really liked -- Deus Ex Human Revolution, Arkham City, Mass Effect 3. But they didn't add any appeal to the Wii U for me -- what did those games have to offer on Wii U that I didn't get the first time playing them? Nothing, really. I bet it was much the same with other consumers, leading to those games flopping on Wii U, and third parties pulling out. The only company that gave really the Wii U a shot with new games was Ubisoft, with things like ZombiU, Assassin's Creed IV, and Watch Dogs. But even those failed to gain sales traction. With the Switch, we're seeing some ports coming to the system, particularly from Bethesda. This time I'm interested, even though I've already played Doom and Skyrim, because there's an appeal to taking those games on the go that other systems just don't have. So I think even ports of already released games will be much more successful on the Switch than they were on the Wii U.
What was also a deal breaker was how slow the Wii U was. I was a day 1 buyer but was let down and even advised friends to wait. They eventually fixed the local loading times (loading the settings app once took about 2 minutes and closing 1 minute!) but even then almost every game you bought on disc had to be updated and that took long even if you had a fast internet connection. The experience was like Xbox and PS and not casual friendly ready-to-play. The Switch is way better at this, I think not only because it has much more RAM and the Nintendo servers are better but as it also finally omits optical media it is well suited for casual and party games.
I don’t care what people say. The Wii U is easily homebrewn, can play Wii games and has a bunch of good Wii U games. It is the best in my books and the best console to keep for nostalgia
RemixedVoice glad you enjoy VR but personally I don't like having shit strapped to my head and moving my head about, I'd rather have a big screen and a controller.its just personal preference but if I was going to play more VR I'd rather not have to move and play with a controller so it just be like improved stereoscopic 3D even though I'm not a big fan of 3D ,I can't stand motion controls and moving around like a Muppet
I’ve never been a fan of 3D, my family’s never had a 3D TV, or 3D Blu-ray player or discs, but I am excited for 4K, but my family doesn’t have a 4K TV or a 4K Blu-ray player, but we may get one around Christmas, because right now we have an old LG plasma TV, Sony Blu-ray player, and an old Yamaha surround sound amplifier, but our new 4K TV will be a 65” LG OLED, and the 4K Blu-ray player will either be an Oppo UDP-203 or an Xbox One X, and the 4K surround sound amplifier will be a Sony
Nintendo and Super Mario have a huge impact on my life and career. When I was in 3rd grade I'd come home from school everyday and play super Mario bros 3 on my Nes. I loved the Mario games so much that I got inspired to want to create my own games. I'm now in college full time studying to be a video game developer and it's all thanks to Nintendo.
Through 2013-Present, I actually loved the Wii U because of the Zelda related games, including giving me a chance to play Wind Waker, which was something I wanted to play for a few years. BUT it doesn't mean I'm ignoring the fact that I had some issues and a somewhat rockyish start. I wasn't a fan of the screen and it had tiny spots that never came off and I don't know how it got on the screen. I didn't like how small the distance limit was. I did like how comfortable holding the controller handles felt, but I agree that it was bulky and heavy. While I'm not gonna deny that it was a fail, I do now see the console as a representation to show what mistakes the Switch has improved on. The Wii U seemed to be more of a Wii, but a prototype to the Switch, so a painful mid way point to a part of the transition of the console evolution.
I think the Wii U was Nintendo testing their technology in the game pad, as they were probably working on the switch but gamers wanted a console so they made the Wii U and gave it to the players. The gyro controls of the switch (BoTW bows, and Sheikah runes) are far more advanced than the Wii or the Wii U, so that leads me to believe that the U was a prototype to test the the hive that would be implemented in the switch.
Another reason is the fact they sold the Wii to casuals who never thought that the Wii U was a new console and didn't bother buying it, because they were still enjoying their bowling on the Wii once a month.
I am a proud owner of a black Wii U. I have great games for it like Zombi U, Smash Bros U, Nintendo Land, Guitar Hero Live, CoD Black Ops 2, Mario Kart 8, Ninja Gaiden 3, Pokken Tournament.
Nintendo survived the 8th gen because of 1- They had a massive war chest of Wii and DS money to sit on. And 2- Despite the wiius failure, the 3DS continued to sell very well as well as to games.
The main reason I didn't get a Wii U is because my parents told me I had a perfectly good Wii and couldn't get another until it broke. I tried explaining how it was different but they didn't believe me.
I've been in love with Mario Kart since the 64. It's great to see such a sweet version of it come out on the Switch. It makes me feel that one game is enough reason to own a switch.
There are some excellent games for this console AND it's backwards compatible. Breath of the Wild, Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, 3D World, Yoshi, Xenoblade to name a few.
The biggest problem with the WiiU is mostly the name. People didn't think it was a whole new console, they thought it was some kind of attachment for the Wii. If the WiiU had another name, it probably could have done better.
The wiiU did not fail and I can prove it the game are great and the consoles high-tech and they still supported so it did not fail it had a lot of good games and I have one for myself and I love it :)
the wii u is an example of what unclear marketing can do to a product, and bad naming as well. I genuinely believe that if Nintendo had marketed this console better and simply named it something else it would have been a success
People always tend to get this wrong, and this channel is no exception. Nintendo does not have an unsuccessful advertising campaign. They appeal to a very different customer base. Saying "That doesn't look cool to teens," doesn't mean anything because that's not who they appeal to. Nintendo consoles and games have always appealed to families. That's why the Wii sold well despite having inferior hardware. It was a cheaply built console with the capability of producing the games it needed. The problem with Wii U is it didn't know what it wanted to be. Nintendo bowed to a lot of the third party developers with a more traditional controlling scheme, but also attempted to keep motion controls of the Wii. Because of that, it used both the main controller and Wiimotes at the same time. The combination of controllers in itself was very confusing, as was its backwards compatibility, having to boot the console in a Wii emulation mode, meaning parents who bought the Wii U thinking that their old games would work weren't offered a very good interface. Additionally, the size of the controller required to do what Nintendo wanted to do made it bulky. Nintendo tried everything to make the gamepad comfortable, but it wasn't. I loved the games on the Wii U, but it felt inconvenient playing games like Hyrule Warriors, a fast paced game, on a slab of plastic that only loosely resembled a controller. Same for virtual console. Games didn't feel very good to play on it. The reason Nintendo recovered has nothing to do with hardware specs or appealing to cool kids. They simply went back to who they were, an innovative company appealing to family based audiences, as those types of games even appeal to gamers as well, especially ones from Nintendo itself. Third party support is secured by allowing indie games. Look on the Switch store, and there are loads of well-received indie games. Compare that to the Wii U where they were allowing abominations like Zombi U, made by a company (Ubisoft) clearly not interested in anything more than PR with Nintendo. Nintendo has largely pushed the big AAA developers to the side, and for the better. That's why the Switch is doing well.
And this is why I only posted what I've done with my blind Pokemon Moon Nuzlocke on deviantART... well, that and I have a good picture-taking camera, but not a good video-recording camera.
Prince of Turtles and iirc the 3ds didn't do well at first, it took some time for that to pick up too.
Yeah the 3DS saved their butts because it was actually good
ever since they went into handhelds, the majority of their sales came from the cheaper option. Look back at 2010's financial report, and you'll see the DS makes up around 60% of their revenue.
The Wii U prototype looks like a bootleg Nintendo switch somebody made with a tablet and two glued on Wii remotes
Mark MKWii Seems like you don't get the joke.
r/whooosh
From what I heard, the Wii U is an overclocked Wii, which was an overclocked Gamecube.
....a lot of prototypes look like that though. That's the whole point of a prototype. Do you guys not know what a prototype is?
@@writershard5065 do you not know what a joke is?
Even though the Wii u didn't sell well, it had some really good games like 3D world, smash bros and Mario maker. Nintendo should just stop being dumb and port them over to the switch. As well as the virtual console.
Screaming Saiyan They can’t port Mario maker but they could put like mario maker player where you can just play levels but not make them
They could port Mario maker but have it be controlled by a controller while in the dock and touchscreen while in portable mode it would just more coding to do
And yet we don't have any. And Arcade Archives: Mario Bros. doesn't count.
Screaming Saiyan about mario maker, i dont wanna ruin the switch screen. I dont think the switch has a touch resistant layer like the 3ds. Maybe have the building be done by controller only?
Retro Gaming yeah, they could easily have it be done by controller and you would have fingerprints all over the place
it sucks how this failed because the wii u wasn't a bad console by any means
Yet it still failed, which proves that it's not the quality that sells the console but rather strong launch titles and continual 3rd/1st party support !
it failed because the marketing was absolute garbage
Taco Manning Do you even know whats on the console? Thats the most generalized list of Wii U games Ive ever seen..
Wii U sounds like an accessory for Wii.
They shouldve called it the Super Wii. Then again it really wasnt much of a Wii..
Joseph Watts Good for you.
Joseph Watts same
Super WiWi
lol 100M units? Alright Nintendo I am a huge fan, but your prediction of 100M units was a wee bit off... just a wee bit off..
Or should I say, *Wii* bit off! OHHHH--- Yeaaahhh I'm sorry...
Wii bit off
no stop existing
They would’ve been lucky to get 20M
IceyPie switch will get there in my opinion. It will sell 120M in my opinion. IF we get SMO 2 and BTW 2 as well
No it was bad really bad
The NX name was shown from a slide at the Nintendo press conference with DeNA back in 2015. The media jumped the gun and began to report that Nintendo is working on their next gen console(even though it was not announced) and would abandon the Wii U. In my opinion, that broke the camel's back.
They said "broke the camals back" not that it was the beginning. And to an extent it was true. With the NX it was either compared as a new wii u(due to the leaks) or was deemed more relevant. The wii u failed but it had its moments but with the switch all those moments were forgotten
The wii u was dead on arrival, there was no straw it was just broken, not even smash could salvage it
My Xbox has a red ring I need to call a ambulance
Wiiu wiiu wiiu wiiu wiiu
Rondre its overused but its still funny
Rondre not funny anymore

+Slayer Doomer I've never heard that in my life...
Joseph McCarthy my Wii U still works properly
Such a shame that the Wii U didn't sell well. I really loved it and it introduced me and many gamers to a brand new IP that is Splatoon.
For me, the Wii U will forever be one of my favorite consoles of all-time.
Gustavo SmashBro00 yeah I love it to!
1) Splatoon is GARBAGE
2) Wii U was a pile of shit. I knew that from day 1 which is why I never bought one.
CF-105 Was it necessary of you to be harsh, CF-105? Really disappointing of you. The Wii U may not have sold well, but people liked it. Plus, Splatoon is still popular thanks to the sequel on the Switch.
Gustavo SmashBro00 don’t forget Mario kart 8 too it got a remaster on the switch because of how popular the original one was
Nintendo's horrible relationship with TH-cam helped tremendously.
Marco Daniel I argree. Nintendo is amazing but doesn't mean they're free from criticism
It's aight buddy. You have a good day.
As simple as that.
why was everyone surprised by nintendo's revival? they've done it like 3 times now.
Nemo Tu Novi when?
gamecube, n64, wii u. all of those major commercial failures that were supposed to put nintendo under.
Since when are the 64 and GC fails?
Both the n64 and Gamecube sold under expectation.
Gamecube low sales figure forced Nintendo to think beyond the limits of how their next console should be. (Wii)
The virtual boy existed. Didn't do a lot more then exist though.

The Wii U didn't fail. We failed the Wii U.
Wtf was up with that Splatoon 2 match?
Zelda Mario Gamer I think everyone in that lobby was braindead
its turf war, literally pointless to care

I was screaming AIM UP inside my head.
Dc at the start lol
You didn't mention the most common hypothesis for why the Wii U failed: Nintendo failed to communicate properly and clearly what the Wii U actually is, to their largest Wii demographic (ie. the casual gamers, families, parents, etc.)
The largest Wii demographic didn't really "get" what the Wii U actually was.
I looked up their year by year income. www.statista.com/statistics/216625/net-income-of-nintendo-since-2008/
Which doesn't even take into account how much more money Nintendo has in the bank compared to what Sega had.
GV amiibos did really well and they still sold almost 70 million 3ds's
Nintendo's Cash Cow=

Sonic if we can go back 2 decades now.
Yeah IKR. Nintendo still owns the most impactful franchises of the gaming history. Mario, Zelda, Pokemon (that one is big) etc. And the DS was selling very well.
You're underestimating assets and how businesses work. It's not a person, businesses rarely have recovery money

'Because the wii didn't really have HD' No the wii didn't have HD period.
Bernard Von Kronkenburger games can be rendered at higher resolution than 480p like Skyward Sword which ran at a sub HD resolution of 512p down scaled to 480p
DJ Crimson Sunbird still not hd
Wii U hardly could stay at 720p
Another big reason why the Wii U failed is because the marketing was shit. Nobody knew if it was an add-on or natural successor mostly due to the name and due to the games shown not really having much better graphics.
This was compounded by a lackluster online. Which they still haven't fixed and I feel like it's only going to bite them in the ass later.
This is why the switch is so much better the name is very different and the marketing showed what it was supposed to be very clearly. All your questions were answered in the one minute 30 second trailer whereas questions stayed pretty much until launch for the Wii U for some people
Robert
And Nintendo's lack of understanding of how the actual internet works seeing how the company did so many corporate atrocities.
Actually, everyone thought it was an add on because of that stupid name.
The name part really doesn't explain anything, the "PlayStation 2" sounds like a remodel of the original PlayStation, that didn't stop it from becoming the best selling console of all time.
Extra Deluxe Actually, and this may come as a surprise, a number at the end of a product name generally means it's a sequel, not a remodel
Extra Deluxe 2 implies a sequel not a remodel.
Wii U stands for Wii Unique
Marshall Weintraub more like Wii U Suck.
Furreal?
IcedEarthaholic take a big ass L
Marshall Weintraub the U stands for "You" as Nintendo wanted to focus on having a ton of single player experiences before it launch
Wii Upgraded. Meh
Ngl the Wii U was pretty nostalgic back in the old days of Nintendo
Because it had classics
Like
Nintendo land
Zombie u
Mario kart 8 ( original )
Mario bros u
Mario 3D land
Smash for Wii U
Etc
I’d blame the marketing
7:51 Steve from Stranger Things??
Has to be, I noticed that too, so I came into the comments to see if anyone else thought it.
Basket Casey, Same.
YESSSS
Lol i thought i was the only one who noticed, right wehn it first showed the commerical thats what i thought
I knew it
Interesting to note is that all the quarters Nintendo reported red numbers in where times when they heavily invested into new assets for the future.
AND TURN ON MOTION CONTROLLS SO YOU CAN AIM BETTER
litteraly my exact thoughts
Extend your video for 15 more seconds for that sweet ad revenue
Very underrated
The Switch be getting that 3rd party support.
LuckyGhost hopefully it keeps up
LuckyGhost i'm hoping for gta 4 10th anniversary for switch
Gta5 would be impossible
Rafia J.R. The switch can do wolfenstein 2 and doom and Skyrim, of course it can run GTA 5, plus the switch is more porwerfull than Xbox 360 and PS3 and GTA 5 first came out on those consoles.
LuckyGhost Switch has like 25 gb space, GTA 5 is about 70 GB game
The Wii U will forever be an underrated console
And this is why I'm a proud owner of a Switch
NO GAMES
Breath of the Wild.
Poor sod, you just went to a overpriced piece of shit system
So Doom, Wolfenstein 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda breath of the wild, STARDEW VALLEY, rocket league and Mario Kart 8 deluxe aren’t considered games? I haven’t even included the indie titles! Fucking Wii U fan.
almost all of those are rereleased games
As a Wii U fanboy, I do hear it out, I just looked at the stock for the Wii U, & seeing how unpopular the Wii U was just hurts me so bad, that it feels like Someone shot me with a beretta in the shoulder. Shit man, that hurts me so bad.
yikes i couldnt pay attention to the video for a solid minute because i was too distracted by that abysmal Splatoon performance 😂
i clicked expecting footage of the wii u having a red ring of death like the xbox. didnt realize this was a series on the company's state.
I love my Wii U and always will. So underrated!
Wiiu is modern day dreamcast.
Wait the wii u died CALL THE AMBULANCE
WII U WII U WII U WII U
I think the wiiU failed was the detachment of looking at ur tv screen and looking down at the gamepad. Breaking the immersion and it was uncomfortable physically on ur neck and eyes. We already do that with the 3DS. Perfect example of what games failed was kirbys color canvas game and star fox on the WiiU. What a horrible concept..
Orlando Marvin the 3ds is different, it’s just a few inches, but the switch was a tad annoying but you got used to it
The sad thing is the Wii U was my childhood

The best thing on the wii u was batman arkham city armored edition and back when it was exclusive. Lego city undercover. God i loved that game
Nintendo left Brazil, the biggest gaming market in latin America. Perhaps It pushed the failling of the Wii u in a stronger way than the TH-cam strikes, but no one sems to talk about it when discussing the flop of the console
I'm pretty sure Brazil isn't that big on buying stuff and more just pirating it, I think it was Brazil where there was a market for pirated games.
people who pirate games also buy games and consoles... the whole WORLD is the market for pirated games
I'd say it's mostly piracy though, let's be honest.
I bought a wiiu and didn’t regret it. Yoshis wooly world was awesome!!
Why do you think Nintendo would just vanish if they didnt' make consoles? They are for one in a much better financial situation than SEGA was. So there would be NO logical reason not to keep making games because it is a company after all, and those want to KEEP making money not stop making them. Other than that it was good video.
GaymingTube Colgate. Toothpaste. If they lost enough money and had no budget, they'd worry about making the same mistake again. Scary world out there.
Nintendo is so cash heavy the company can survive for the next fifty years just by doing nothing.
That isn't how that works. A company's net worth is not how much money it actually has.
They were fine, but not "surviving for the next fifty years" fine. They had incredibly valuable IP that people still wanted and will probably continue to want. And they've had a string of several incredibly well-selling consoles over the past decade.
And that is why they can afford to take losses.
they also have a redicukous cash reserve, they could live off of at least 2 more gamecube level generations.
I think the biggest thing Nintendo did wrong wth advertising the Wii U was only showing the controller. One ad talks all about the controller but never once shows a console, making people think it's another Wii accessory.
My reason not to buy Nintendo is they shutdown their online services to fast. I remember them releasing Pokemon Black 2 and they turned off the servers not even a year later.
its not their fault, they didn't shut it down, it was a 3rd party company that was managing it and they closed it down
Ever heared of Steam ? they just continue the online support for the Games which ran with Games for Windows Live. This could have been an option instead of closing the online service after not even 2 Years.
And then they shut down miiverse
Honestly, the Wii U was one of my favourite consoles. Games like Pikmin 3,Mario Kart and Smash Bros were games I'd play for hours on end without fail.
Another main issue was the specs. It was barely more powerful than a Xbox 360. My iPhone 7 is more powerful than it.
king of swag187 Actually the Wii U had a somewhat powerful GPU for the time, and quite alot of memory.
AccessGranted - yeah man and my s7 is literally like a iphone 7 and wii u sandwiched together, its pretty dumb
Grant Gibson It was basically a mid tier 2011 PC
oh yeah, yup totally. whatever helps you go to sleep at night you guys ;)
I still have a wii u and bought street fighter 2 turbo 2 days ago
10/13/17 was the date
Nice!
Lmaooo
I have a Switch, Wii U, and New 3DS (Nintendo-Wise). The Wii U was my first console and I have very fond memories of it.
The Wii U is the new Wii also my cousin has one to
Now nintendo just puts an ad on your video, a picture ad.
They had to *switch* to the switch.
I thought you were saying One of Sony's flaws was Kevin Butler xD
How many times does he have to say "uh yeah" in all of his videos. Smh so much cringe.
The Switch is way better at this, I think not only because it has much more RAM and the Nintendo servers are better but as it also finally omits optical media it is well suited for casual and party games.
do how pong consles enterd the red ring of death
yes
I don’t care what people say. The Wii U is easily homebrewn, can play Wii games and has a bunch of good Wii U games. It is the best in my books and the best console to keep for nostalgia
I have a Wii U
I like how chill your voice sounds!
3D was never incredible, it was only because of the constant marketing. and avatar
3D,motion controls,I think VR is shaping up to be a complete gimmick
TheGingerburger I don't think VR is a gimmick. Once you play one of your favorite games in VR, there's no going back.
What you call "lucky", I call "Well-planned and releasing something people are dying to get".
😠😠😠
Ethan Wylie I love Wii U
😂😂😂
What , I still love it 😞😞😞
Dude I like the wiiu but you gotta admit that thing was a flop
Nintendo and Super Mario have a huge impact on my life and career. When I was in 3rd grade I'd come home from school everyday and play super Mario bros 3 on my Nes. I loved the Mario games so much that I got inspired to want to create my own games. I'm now in college full time studying to be a video game developer and it's all thanks to Nintendo.
my wii u’s charger port (is that what you call it??) is completely busted but i honestly don’t think that’s much of a loss
Wii U actually had no advertisement after that one disney advertisement as far as I remember.
Your editing was all over the place man.
Another reason is the fact they sold the Wii to casuals who never thought that the Wii U was a new console and didn't bother buying it, because they were still enjoying their bowling on the Wii once a month.
I just realized that the kid in the mid from Nintendo's advertisement was playing in Stranger Things
Wii U sounds like an updated version of the wii
I am a proud owner of a black Wii U. I have great games for it like Zombi U, Smash Bros U, Nintendo Land, Guitar Hero Live, CoD Black Ops 2, Mario Kart 8, Ninja Gaiden 3, Pokken Tournament.
My favorite Wii U game of all time was Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition.
I don’t care if people hate the WiiU I’ve wanted one for years when I was little and I’m not abandoning that
Switch stocks dropped when it released, yet the console is currently a massive success.
I had a wii u and i loved it, never had problems with it
Nintendo survived the 8th gen because of 1- They had a massive war chest of Wii and DS money to sit on. And 2- Despite the wiius failure, the 3DS continued to sell very well as well as to games.
cold you plz do the transformers series
I wouldn’t call the Wii U “terrible” I’d just call it “unfinished”.
The main reason I didn't get a Wii U is because my parents told me I had a perfectly good Wii and couldn't get another until it broke. I tried explaining how it was different but they didn't believe me.
7:00 I was thinking AVGN before you even mentioned it. Good on ya lol.
4:20 I'm dying holy shit
I've been in love with Mario Kart since the 64. It's great to see such a sweet version of it come out on the Switch. It makes me feel that one game is enough reason to own a switch.
"...f**king Colgate... The toothpaste maker."
I died XD
I consider myself to be a hardcore Nintendo fan, and I didn't even know what the Wii U was until mid 2013.
In that one smash brothers ad, Joe Keery ( Steve from Stranger Things) is one of the kids on the couch.
that show's how much nintendo fans supported the Wii U
the wii u is an example of what unclear marketing can do to a product, and bad naming as well. I genuinely believe that if Nintendo had marketed this console better and simply named it something else it would have been a success
Under the price of other competitors, Ya sure, "spending 400$ on a fucking short ranged tablet is totally worth it"
People always tend to get this wrong, and this channel is no exception.
Nintendo didn't die off after the Wii U because they are stingy with their money, and still had tons of cash laying around after the Wii's success.
The wii u didn't sell as well was the fact some people thought it was just a extra fancy controller
The Wii U was fun! Playing Mario 3D world while a sibling would tap like crazy on the console making steps was fun as hell!
And this is why I only posted what I've done with my blind Pokemon Moon Nuzlocke on deviantART... well, that and I have a good picture-taking camera, but not a good video-recording camera.
should have dumped the Wii name and went with more teenage/ young adult type marketing .
