This was my favorite video I've ever made, Hopefully Y'all Enjoy! What Are YOUR Thoughts On Nail Yakupov's RISE and FALL? And Did YOU See Yakupov becoming a SUPERSTAR or a HUGE BUST At the Time? I'd LOVE to Hear YOUR Thoughts! #GravGang #RoadTo30kSUBS
Is it just me or does Jordan leaving for baseball more important than Yakupov’s journey starting. I’m a hockey fan and I feel like that’s the no-brainer for wut event was bigger lol
Exactly. Other than Yakupov, the other 1st overalls weren’t busts at all. Look at who were the GMs at the time: Tambellini, McTavish, and Chiarelli. All three GM’s were absolutely terrible. Drafting Yakupov, firing Ralph Krueger on Skype, trading Hall for Larsson, signing Lucic and Koskinen to big number/long term contracts...the list goes on.
I went to Highschool with Yakupov (Northern Highschool Sarnia Ontario) and he was just the most unliked person to the point the other Hockey players didnt even like being around him. 1 time he literally made fun of the special ed kids selling Muffins like who does that.... Karma ended up catching him at least
I went to Northern graduated 1998, I remember the Sting players would have classes and they all looked like full grown men with beards. I don’t know how seriously they took school because they were playing so much hockey with practice and games, they looked exhausted from what I remember. Nail looked like he had quite the ego but I don’t know how you handle that kind of popularity at 17-18.
This man proved that you can be good in juniors, get drafted 1st and then be incredibly bad. Man NHL legend and my idol. You should do Rick DiPietro next if you make another video like this
This is a clear example of character being as important as the talent. The HoF players all have a team-first character. Those that are self centered are left alone on the bench.
Bad for high end talent, but surprisingly good for goalies, and some good depth players, which are a lot harder to scout based on how guys play at 18. Definitely one of the strangest drafts in awhile, I remember thinking the Oilers should have taken Murray as they needed defense and I wasn't sold on Yakupov being an elite player, but I don't think he would have fared any better
Yakupov is immensely talented. Incredible shot, excellent hands and blazing speed. Hockey IQ is among the lowest in his draft year. Terribly sad, lost in his world and cannot be coached.
I coached a kid like that in Midget Rep. Best skater, stickhandler, and shot on the team. But, he played a different game. I'm not sure what that game was, but it wasn't hockey. Once we had just scored with less than a minute to go in the game to go ahead 6-5. This kid decided that this was a good time to initiate a fight. We got the instigator, they scored on the power play, and we lost in OT. His Dad tried to get me replaced as coach because I wouldn't play him the last two minutes of any game after that. He lasted four games in Juniors. His teammates set fire to his skates in the parking lot. That should tell you something.
Had a friend who played in the Ohl and was saying they were lying about his age... he was actually like 21 not 18.Probably bullshit but he swears by it 😂 he’s like the guy is actually 30 now! He was so dominant cause he had 3-4 years on the league
If there had been clones of Nail Yakupov, and 4 of them went into a corner for the puck, the opposing defenseman would have still come up with the puck. Extremely light stick. Was a liability on the ice. I’m not sure if it was a lack of effort, or a low hockey IQ, but he just couldn’t play at the NHL level. His first year stats was really inflated with garbage goals when the game never mattered.
Freaking amazing video!!!! What a great job! Your editing is way better! I think you are doing a great job! I hope when I have kids I can get them into hockey, and the NHL. It would be worth it in my opinion!
You guys should watch an early interview during when he was still learning English and then watch a more recent video of him speaking English. It’s actually very impressive, you can barely hear any Russian accent in his voice when he speaks English
Great format, great transitions, loved how in depth you got in each chapter and category, I loved the use of pictures and visuals, dude this was A tier
I found his situation similar to that of Alexei Yashin from the Ottawa Senators. In that similar realm (but not as bad) was Alexander Mogilny. I remember there was a lot of hype surrounding Mogilny in Vancouver. He seemed to have really found his stride and then signed a large contract. Once that contract was signed though, he changed overnight. He no longer put in the effort to chase down pucks and absolutely refused any sort of battle along the boards for a loose puck. In his mind, he was going to get paid regardless, so why bother working hard? Some people will claim that’s “typical Russian” work ethic; not me though. I also remember Pavel Bure was like a pitbull in puck battles and he didn’t care how big or tough the other guy was either.
His rookie season wasn't even that great. He managed to get 6 goals in the last 3 games of the season during garbage time which made his stats in the shortened season look better than they otherwise would have been.
I somewhat blame both management and Nail. They should have gave him a full season in the AHL to help season his game. Plus Nails attitude was in the wrong place he had a somewhat cocky attitude that wasn’t helping his game. Kinda glad Puljujarvi has come back and wants to work on the game aspect it’s not about you it’s about your game and being a team play Nail was non of that I always felt he was more about him then his teammates
1:43 Is he really the worst 1st-overall pick in NHL history? I think he's definitely top 10 worst...but back in the '60s there were some bad bad picks. At least 2 or 3 drafts, the 1st-overall pick never played a single NHL game! Yakupov played over 300 NHL games. Or what about goalie Rick DiPietro - he never justified being selected 1st overall with his play. So...at the very most, Yakupov is the 5th-worst 1st-overall selection...and even that is debatable.
I met him a few times in Russia a couple of years ago and it struck me that despite being one of the biggest disappointments in the NHL history and being a mediocre KHL player he had an arrogant attitude like he is a superstar. To be honest, it was even fun to chat with him and see all that delusions in his brain :))
Covered his actual downfall (2nd and 3rd season) in two seconds with almost no detail or ganeplay footage. Shit coukd just go look at his career stats myself then
murray is a bust too. also Oilers scouts suck and yak was the consensus first overall pick. Oilers coaching ruined nail. his rookie year was really good
His attitude and selfish 'put the team last' mindset was his downfall. You can have all the talent in the world but if you have this obnoxious 'I dont give a shit' attitude then that mindset will bleed into every part of your life. Could have gone different for him if he just knew how to be humble.
I could of told you Yakupov sucked. I once watched him in the OHL a couple of times all he cared about was waiting on the blue for a breakaway not even bothering to play defense. And when the opponent ended up scoring he was reamed out by the coach for not playing defense and he didn’t give two shits… I have the photo.
No, those weren't even alright stats for a normal NHL player. Maybe like a 4th liner or something. So, he was terrible all the way around after year 1...... Also you missed noticing your pun at the end when you said final "Nail" in the coffin. Lol

Do a vid on why that Crosby dude was such a bust.
Ah there's the video you where planning...
ilya mikheyev
Who was DRAFTED Second that year?
I love how Yakupov being a bust isn’t even a big deal to the Oilers cuz they had so many first overall picks🤣
I hate how u havent gone on to my channel an disliked all my videos
Nah it's bc they have McJesus now lol
Yeah they really did great with all those #1s. The real bust is the Oilers management.
Lmao
The peasants of the NHL weren’t worth my talent, so I didn’t try, I needed competition
Peasants like Conner McDavid?

He's Russian...I think that says enough
imagine what history it will be if yakupov wasn’t a draft bust.
Edmonton might not have gotten McDavid!
Soon they will not have him.
If Oilers drafted Murray and Washington Drafted Nail
The minecraft music in the background makes this the best video ever. The thing with yak was he was an elite athlete but had no other elite qualities

That 2012 draft class has to be one the worst in recent years
Very shallow draft indeed.
Weren't the first 4 picks total busts?
@@bent6293 first four were yakupov Ryan Murray, Alex Galchenyuk, and Griffin Reinhart. 2 were busts 2 are decent
@@Theskullcrusher10399 Yakupov and Reinhardt were by far the worst

11:01 "Final Nail in the coffin." I see what you did there LMAO
When the biggest highlight of your career is your broken-english interview at the world Juniors, you know you're a draft bust.
Serves him right for being named after a small construction object
He seems to have Manziel qualities. All the talent and ability in the world, but kept shooting himself in the foot.
The manziel of the nhl

I would love to, these videos take wayyyyy too long to make though so if they don't do too well we'll see!
Agreed
If Yakupov put as much effort into being a team player as he did with his goal celebrations he’d be the best ever 😂
Gravs doing a voice over video 😳

I really enjoyed this style of video! Do more of these man
Ego destroyed him. He forgot hard work, ethic and application is what is required. As an Avs fan, I was so disappointed with him.
He was doing well early in the 2017 season , but the Avs were rolling and he couldn't keep up with Kerfoot, Jost, Compher etc
Hes Russian he didn't forget, he never learned that
Hard to feel bad for a jerk
Do a vid like this for every single player who didn’t get 1000 points
Owen power is back again
13:52 "From a first overall pick to basically a KHL scrub.." dang that's hard, but also so true
So your saying that i should subscribe?
If i do what do i get?

Look at all those names we could have had in Edmonton! Nope, we choose Yakupov...
He was the consensus #1 pick. Moreso than Hall or RNH were. Draft hindsight is a fools game.

Great vid, I love this kind of content
What always confused me is he had a great rookie season. I’ve never seen a player peak in their rookie season and violently plummet from there😂😂
It's happened in baseball a lot. Different sport, but usually means the player is either 1.) Total asshole who cannot be coached 2.) Drugs 3.) Injury.
Do alex daigle or Patrik stefan next!

He was at the end of a 236 year career is what happened.
Wow, what a video!
When you have the body but not the mind : Fail Yakupov.
Do the oilers always just pick first in the draft? Is it like a god given right because they drafted the great one? Is that why?
Hopefully Jack Hughes doesn’t follow the same path. I get nervous when people bring up comparing the two #1 overall picks.
56 points in 49 games probably not
