It is a Manchu custom for men to shave their heads and leave only a small braid on the back of their heads. The Manchus forced the Han people to have the same hairstyle and wear the same clothes as them to show that their culture was superior to that of the Han people. However, due to contact with Han culture, Manchus grew more and more hair and their braids became thicker and longer. In the early Qing Dynasty, most of their hair was shaved off, and their braids were like a rat tail; Two-thirds of the head was shaved; by the end of the Qing Dynasty, only one-half of the head was shaved, the braid turned into an ox tail.
Even, traditionally Hindus have always worn queue like hairstyles called Shikha, even many Hindu priests and conservative Hindus still wear it. The Shikha in general is very thick in diameter, starting from the crown of the head and back, with shaving the front half. It is the traditional Hindu hairstyle for the last 5k years. But the Shikha is never braided, its put in a bun.
Instead of chopping it off, they should have returned to fully growing it out imho. They merely adopted the Western Empire's hairstyles, another example of submission?
