I’m sorry to hear people were so judgmental of what you were enjoying (nails/lipstick). A “no buy” should be very personal to the person doing it and does not deserve outside criticism. What one person views as essential does not need to be approved by anyone. I sense the viewers being so judgmental have no intention of doing an actual no buy. I think your very brave for sharing your journey and inspiring others. I personally have found your videos very motivating. I wasn’t ready last year, but I did tackle my health habits last year, and after that accomplishment, I feel more ready for a no buy. I won’t give up experiences, personally theater/movies/family travel gives me a lot of joy. But my shopping has got to stop!
Oh, if only more people in the world were an unjudgemental as you! Thank you for being so kind; I hope your 2020 is healthy and happy and I'm wishing you the best of luck with everything x
The Personal Philosophy Project thank you! If only we had more people like you to inspire us! I thought I’d have to cut off TH-cam all together to make it through the year ahead, but you’ve opened my eyes to another side of social media. So truly, thank you!
Oooo! I really like the idea of continuing to spend for the purpose of experiences. I personally love going to the movies with my dad since it’s one of the things we bond over now that I’m an adult and live away from home. I would hate to give that up. :)
Clover S Laurel I agree! Thank you for sharing. The older my children get, the more value I see in our travels/adventures as a family. Even as something as simple as a little road trip.... I think narrowing in on the experiences and things that truly make us happy, and cutting out the things that are draining our time, money, and happiness, is a good start to creating ones own “no buy” rules. I am pretty embarrassed about all things I have bought to make myself look like a “better” person or to feel happy. I don’t know why it’s taken me 20 years to wake up, but I am glad to be here now at 40, and I am really excited for the year ahead. Happy new year!
It depends on what you want to achieve. I thought a no buy year was about saving money. However it appears to be about the experience of it, which is fine. However, I do believe many people struggeling to make ends meet are looking for tips on how to save so that they may pay a bill, their debts, move to a better area or whatever. Unfortunately her idea of saving is gonna end up leaving her with a perhaps one to two thousand which is fine but not much money at all. If you want to stop having to worry about money then you should work more and buy less. Meaning no experiences as you put it. Do that for a few years and you may save up enough money for a house. Not having to pay rent is neat. But if that is not something you are willing to do, don't. It's your choice. Don't take her videos as financial advise though. It will get you nowhere.
I see this as so beneficial is so many ways. It’s detoxing from an overstimulated and over consumed world. Saying no is so powerful! Thank you for being and inspiration
I think I have said this before, but I love how you make sure that the things that you do (like a no buy year) are about content and reflecting instead of restricting or validation (from others). It is inspiring and makes it do-abe and enjoyable to change (in a healthy way)! Thanks for being so open
@Asia S M as long as you're actually reading the books that you buy, there's nothing to be ashamed of! (*cough cough* I personally tend to p_rate epubs on my phone though *loud cough*)
Kimmy I totally agree with you! I think I’m going to do a combination of this for example put away/store the things I know I will use later and toss or rehome the things I know I won’t use again.
@@Aima952 Hear me out. Why not keep them, THEN when you're out of your old ones, if the ones you kept are actually getting close to their use by date you can toss them then? Otherwise you are just losing money in an attempt to save/be minimalist
Last year I did a low-buy year, with success in more areas than not, but books - oy, oh, wowza. So going into this year, which I'm entitling my Buy Free Year, my rule is that I have to read 5 of the books I have pulled to read in 2020 before I'm allowed to buy one new-to-me book , and the new book must be a used copy, either found at a charity shop, or a used book store, or rotated to me from a family member.
You’re adorable! I’m starting no-buy 2020. It’s going to be a huge change after basically 3 decades (!!!!) of overspending and using shopping as a stress management technique. I’m going to allow cafes, experiences, holidays, & replacements but no clothes, accessories, home stuff or books. Wish me luck! 😘
Oh I so relate with the stress management issue! For me, shopping (especially clothing) is a way to manage my insecurities. And I'm fully aware of it, because I recognise the pattern from my mother. Isn't it funny how we give the power to control our emotiona to something as vain and external? Last couple of months I've tried to encourage arts and writing related habits to deal with stress (and also the odd bike tour), from morning pages to paint a canvas very slowly to control obsession and haste. I hope you can find your medicine!
My 2020 NBY year rules are: 1. Buy no running shoes - reduce my total amount of shoes I own throughout the year, by wearing through them 2. Buy no clothes - think about the clothes I currently own and decide which ones to keep heading into 2021 3. Buy no supplements except replacements 4. Reduce clutter and digitalize where possible
You may want to make a more specific plan about de-cluttering. It's a huge task so break it down by room or by the kind of stuff it is (Kondo). Otherwise it's hard to start and hard to continue. Also, build in some kind of reward system for yourself as you go along. Just giving yourself a stick in a column can do wonders for motivation.
I only have four more days left on my no spend year. It's been interesting and productive. It's definitely changed how I live my life. It's wonderful. Oh....and I didn't start off with this goal in mind but a huge benefit is that I now have zero debt.
@@CinziaDuBois Thank you. The first two months were the hardest because it required constant thought to reshape my habits but by March it was much easier. Now it's just second nature to live thoughtfully. :)
God I love this. I'm putting serious effort this year into changing my job - it's the best money I've ever made but it has made me more miserable than I would have thought possible - and I'm wanting to be open to better jobs that aren't as soul-crushing but might pay less. I opened myself up to looking into how best to do this, and then BAM - youtube algorithm shows me this lol. I'm going to draft my rules for 2020 today!
The nail breaking thing hasn't been a huge issue for me since I had incredibly strong nails before my eating disorder, but I had a full, thick head of hair that would snap hair ties regularly. Once I recovered, my hair never did, and it's still thin and miserable-looking and fine and brittle, no matter how much I take care of it. It's really been my biggest insecurity for so long, so thank you for talking about your nails. It really did make me feel less alone in the world.
In 2019 I invested too much of my time, energy, and money into buying and caring for things I didn't need. I really like your point of personal investment, it's helped to frame my goals for this years "low buy". It really is about what I will do with the time I've gained back. Thank you for sharing and inspiring!
I find this so useful. No longer buying clothes helps me wearing what I already have, going through stuff I wouldn't wear in the past because there was always something new and also understanding what I really like in my wardrobe. It's 17th of January and I bought nothing, just food, and it brings me a sense of peace that I really enjoy. Although I donated clothes last year several times, I also wanna donate some more. I bought many clothes from the thriftstores so if someone feels they really need a new blazer, for instance, for work or for an event, they can find great ones and in perfect condition at the thriftstore. The only thing I do need is a warm beanie because it is getting really cold. But I will donate the old one I no longer wear.
I totally love this video..Yes No Buy year for my 2020 is all about self investment and about self respect of my own besides really reflecting more of the value of money..2020 will be a self challenging year for me as I have already planned out what I cannot buy and what I can buy...Firstly I definitely will reduced my groceries buying to half of what I usually buy...Planning more of vegetables intake and lesser of meat consumption...
Amazing news, Angel!! Well done on taking on the challenge and setting your rules (I'm super pleased to hear you're cutting down on meat - good for you!) :D best of luck, I hope you reap the benefits of it all
I’m planning on buying no fast fashion. I live in an extremely cold climate where the entire months of January and February are below 0 (Fahrenheit) and I’m starting university next year and I’ve discovered I’m wildly unprepared warm clothing wise, so I may have to slide a bit when it comes to some of those clothing items. However, I’ve found that keeping a list in my phone of what I want to get helps when I’m in a thrift store. I can always try and hunt for an item and if I don’t find it, it’s okay because I’ve still got many months :)
Great point, I've been trying as well. And, I dunno, warm clothing is necessary, I'm in Canada lol. I just had to buy my child a new snowsuit today bc she outgrew hers. I try to only replace things. I also try to buy second hand but it's not always possible (e.g. most footwear).
It's an interesting topic. I grew up being told 'don't ever ask' for things and so have automatically been economical all my life. It's taken me years to feel good about buying myself things! I like the way you create rules that fit your life. I now have more than enough clothes, makeup etc and so it's time for a no-buy rule on those. thanks for sharing! From NZ.
My wife and I are challenging ourselves to not buy anything non-vital for as long as we can. If one of us does buy something non-essential, the one who didn't gets to request something from the other. We are both amateur writers who are terrible at finishing our projects so I know that if I lose she'll ask me to finish the first draft of one particular novel within a time frame and I'll probably request the same of her, to be honest. Your No-Buy videos have actually greatly inspired me, so thank you for that!
This is the overspending remedy that I have been searching for! For whatever reason, not buying or limiting to just essentials feels much more tangible than the restricting ideas of budgeting and saving. I’ve struggled with budgets and savings for years and I overspend like it’s my profession, even on more sustainable items like second hand clothes, etc. It’s primarily, food, drinks and random purchases. Thank you for starting off by saying what you can buy so that the challenge doesn’t feel utterly limiting. I’m excited to start this new way of life! My few exceptions are items that will enhance my personal business plan which include some DIY/art materials and tech, tattoos in moderation (appointments already on the books), and a few fresh cut flowers here and there as a gift for my spirit. Cheers to 2020!
I would really like to see a regular update on the now buy. Thing like what you replaced, what you struggled with not buying, or not struggled with at all. If there was something you really wanted but talked yourself out of buying and how did you talk you’re self out of it. Thing you did or didn’t do with you’re money etc. love to see more! Lots of love. Esmeralda
Finally an eloquent, sensible TH-camr with a sense of humour and eclectic interests... I am so grateful to whichever algorithm put you on my screen 🙏 I, too have found great satisfaction, joy and dare I say growth, in my no-buy year. Like you, I intend to continue on this journey of essentialism and deliberation as I am convinced that there in lies the promise of a meaningful life. One thing I have found, is that it is so much easier to keep my home tidy and clean, that I finally have spare time for my hobbies AND to do regular voluntary work and thereby contribute beyond myself. I find it very fulfilling to be able to do something for my community. I look forward to seeing you again, so thank you for YOUR contribution 😊
Thank you so much for such a lovely comment. It's amazing you've done more for your community and have more space - best of luck in continuing your journey x
In 2017 I decluttered my posessions and my life, and tried a no-buy month, which changed my whole mindset. I am a wannabe minimalist. Not shopping, except some essential clothing, food, basic cosmetics, love make-up, but have only one of everything and not buying anything till I don’t use up what I have. I thought in the beginning I am going to feel somehow poor or going to miss buying things, but the opposite happened. I am so grateful for that what I have and happy to not collect things what I never use. What I am thinking is to have a list in 2020 of everything what I bought (not essentials) so I can see where I need some improvement :) loving your videos!
I am so completely charmed by your openness. You dont have to explain yourself but it is extremely kind of you to do so for those that are critical. Your candor is fresh and makes me relate to you. I also appreciate the effort you put into explaining the details while not expecting others to be in exactly the same place. Many thanks- Jennifer
Sorry, after watching your videos I have the need to share my experience. Since I was a child, I was told to not trash anything because it could be useful for other purpose/in the future. Because of all my life experiences related to that, nowadays my rooms (I have 2) in my house are fool of crap. I really struggle to throw away sth that is broken/old. If it's clothes, even if I can't use them to go out any more, I can use them at home. And if it's objects, you never know what I will need in the future. And there is also the nostalgia factor. I feel really guilty when I trash sth. And sometimes my parents or grandparents pick up those things because "they can still serve another purpose". Being at home gives me stress and makes me feel down, partly because of the negativity of my family and partly because of the mess in my rooms (and partly because I feel my life there becomes static, I just slowly get old and head toward death). I've been told so many times to tidy everything up. But there is so much rubbish it's impossible. And sometimes when I work through my guilt, etc., and manage to get rid of sth, they pick it up and keep it because "oh, but this is still useful". Also, I've lived in different places for long periods of time; I always travel with a big suitcase and a backpack with the essential things I'll need. But I always end up buying some clothes and kitchenware, that, by the end of my stay, I send home in parcels because I feel sorry for those things (or I really like them). Also, I forgot to add that my mother isi the type of person who buys little things for you every now and then, and because of that, I have way too many socks, underwear, magazines I will never read, etc. In the last 2-3 years I've been trying to tidy everything up, trying to convince my mother to stop buying useless things for me, and when I travel, I leave a box of things at home to be send to me. I'd rather pay for the box to be send back and forth, that for extra things that will take up more space at home. But I'm 33, I've been struggling with mental health issues for the last 10+ years, and I reached a point where I can't do this any more. I can't keep living like this because it only gets worse. I barely have any social life any more, everything I have to do everyday seems too hard and stressful... So I'm very glad I found your videos about decluttering and no buy experience, because I want to try to improve my life in 2020, and I think this will help me. When I go back home, I won't trash most of the things, buy I've decided to put the things I no longer use and don't like to look at in boxes and keep them in the attic, and keep at hand only the really useful or nice things. Also, when I'm abroad my mother can't buy me anything (although with the box I asked her to send me, she sent me 2 extra pairs of socks, and when she had to send me some documents, she added a 500 g sachet of sweet pepper I had mentioned in one conversation, but that I didn't really need (I ended up really using it, but still, is way too much). That gave me tons of stress, because I needed the docs rather urgently, and for a week I worried customs would stop the packet); I'll work on that when I'm back. And finally, I'm not gonna do a No buy year because I don't want strict rules giving me more stress, buy I'll only buy what I really really want/need. Thanks a lot for making this videos, really. They made me feel more optimistic about the future. I feel now there is something else I can try to get out of this situation. Thank you.
Good luck! I have also grown at home where things arent thrown out, so I at least stopped buying anything i dont love, So most od thé nostalgic clutter Is from my pre uni life....And somehow miraculously And I never ever hoped it might happen, but I hot rod of couple of items which I know dont looj thé best on mě, like 2 dollar bra. In recenze years, I significantly shifted towards aesthetics And that made a great diference. I fór instance embrace Jenniffer Scott idea of always looking presentable which she describes in her Brooks And on her TH-cam Channel. You can do it! And yes, thé Eternal unwanted Sock problem... Během there too!
Well done for taking these important steps. My rule for getting rid of things is anything I haven't touched in over a year and a half isn't useful for me, so I get rid of it. If I haven't used something in five years, like wires or pens, I get rid of them. I think you may find this rule incredibly important for you; I know you're tempted to move things into the attic first, but what I would suggest is move things into the attic and make a promise to yourself that if you don't touch anything in the attic in six months time, donate all the boxes without opening any of them. Just donate the boxes and don't remind yourself of what's in them. Then repeat the cycle: find anything you haven't touched or used in over one and a half years, pack the things into boxes, put them in the attic. Then, after 6 months, if you haven't touched those boxes, donate them again and don't open them to remind yourself what's in them. It will really help you develop both mental clarity and freedom from these things which are holding you back and keeping you in a place you're not happy. Change only happens when you desire to change outweighs your desire to stay the same. Best of luck, I'm so glad these videos have helped. Take care of yourself x
cantacarallada I just wanted to say that it might be really helpful to seek out a nice therapist. You have clearly been through a lot, and you don’t have to do everything on your own. It took me years and years to go (other issues than you describe) and after a few sessions I could not be happier with my decision!! I will still be going there for a while, but it makes me feel so good every week. Because it is something I do for myself, I am really doing the best I can, and although it might feel weird at first, or confrontational, it will only be for the better. Other than that: I agree that when you put the stuff in the attic you shouldnt open it back up! Your mind will just trick you into holding onto material items again. For some reason there is a fear, and you probably would be best off if you could find out why that is there and in which other ways it manifests itself in your life. You have so much to gain!! You are allowed to enjoy life, and you are allowed to struggle. You are also allowed to seek help. All the best!
@@CinziaDuBois I agree. PLUS don't tell your family you're about to declutter in 2020, and maybe find a friend (or, if it's easier for you, a stranger) to help and encourage you in the process.
This video couldn't have come at a better time! You inspired me to do no-buy for 2020 as I save for my wedding next fall, and I'll definitely add some of your rules to my list
I don't think I've ever said this but thank the stars for the TH-cam algorithm! I recently moved cross-country and it was *very* expensive. I'm a grad student and still in a fair amount of debt due to it - I had to pick up a second (third) job to manage the expenses I incurred when I went way over budget last year. After listening to your videos re: no-buy, I'm going to be trying this myself in 2020, with the specific intent of putting whatever money I would have spent on those items directly to my high-interest credit card. It seemed more reasonable to make a list of exceptions to the no-buy rule instead of saying a bunch of things I can't have. *My YEP, YOU CAN DO IT list:* --supporting small artists (including small-venue music shows) --gifts for others (and materials for making gifts for those others) --Travelling to see family --Adding vacation days to academic conferences (I'm already scheduled for one and will probably go to two) --Groceries (freezer rule: 1 in 1 out) --Maintaining beauty regime (a gel manicure every month) --Findings and needs for destashing my fabric stash --Educational/Academic pursuits (I've tried to use the library for books I need for my PhD, but I need to write all over them and keep many for reference) --1 drink while out with friends (alcoholic or coffee based) --gym/fitness --1 new videogame per college break (spring, summer, fall, and winter breaks) I might even vlog about it...we'll see. Thanks again for the inspiration!
That's amazing to hear, Huitzilin. I'm really keeping my fingers crossed for you this year with working off your credit card debts and managing your university and jobs (been there). You've really got this! Best of luck, rooting for you!
I watched the last video and these videos are like the Christmas gift to me. I appreciate them that much. Consumerism has me down. Bankrupcy, underpaid, crippling student loan and all. I have instilled in me a shopping addiction and no gratitude for what I have. My mom and grandma had it too due to no self esteem and spousal abuse. Anyway, this is a breath of fresh air and hope in a world that is low on it thank you
I've been looking forward to this challenge for 2020. I truly struggle with impulse buys, and the time has come. TH-cam knew this about me before I ever searched for any "no spend" type content, but thanks to this quirky set of algorithms, I am a new subscriber. I find you absolutely charming, approachable, and real. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, you've helped me believe that I too can be mindful about my spending. 💐
I totally agree with all your tips. I’m like you, my nails are very important to me, I keep my nails done. Once per month. I can give up anything but I keep my nails done. Love your ideas. I have no trouble sticking to the rules for a successful no buy /low buy year. I love a challenge!
I'd been setting some challenges for myself in 2020 and stumbled across your No Buy Review video. I really appreciate the sentiment behind it, and will definitely be incorporating some of your rules into my own. My big goal for the year is to start breaking the fast fashion cycle. I've started mending those clothes that I do have but will be trying to either invest in higher quality items or by making them myself when it does come to replace them.
I'm going to start out by having a no buy January then see how that goes and reevaluate Feb. 1st. I need to go through my freezer and try to consume the food I have there first. No clothes, makeup, magazines, art supplies, etc. I'd like to extend it but 1 year seems overwhelming.
You can also set up a reward system for yourself - give yourself a sticker or some kind of notation for every day you spend $0. Every day you give yourself a pat on the back makes you more likely to continue your quest!
@@julieclark78 Great. I did buy gas today but have been doing great. That is the only money I have spent besides bills this month. I'm a teacher so I understand the reward system. Matter of fact I went to a potluck Saturday night and was able to make something from things I already had in my pantry.
I love all these, and I support the idea of keeping a couple things that may seem frivolous to some that are actually very personal to you. It shouldn’t be about deprivation. Theater is a big thing for me, so my current rule is I can only go if I use a discount app, or if a friend who writes theater reviews can bring me along as her plus one. I’m also a huge reader, and I use the Libby app which links to my public library card so I always have a book with me and it’s completely free. This is my first month ever trying a no buy challenge, so thank you for the inspiration!
Hello! Im going to do my best on a no buy or low buy I haven’t decided yet. But something don’t think is necessary to reduce your collections to the bare basics. As that creates waste, I’m not going to be buying more make up in 2020, my rule is to use what I have, try to reduce my collections little by little mostly by showing them some love, I’m sure I won’t be replacing anything any time soon. for clothes I’ve given some to charity shops but I’m also selling some on depop that way I can recover some of the money I already spend and then that money goes to my savings. But I hope to rise enough to adopt a Jaguar, tiger or a rhino through WWF or Perhaps donating that money to help people in need. Thank you for all your great ideas and rising awareness of over consumption Happy holidays! X
Thank you, Lilith! It's so great you're thinking of donating some your money to adopt an endangered species and you're planning on using everything up that you have (you'll be surprised how long it lasts. I didn't buy any makeup this year, even though I was allowed to should I need to replace it - my makeup lasted all year, even my foundation XD)
Oh wow. How interesting the damage malnutrition from an eating disorder can cause. Life is too short not to have your fake nails if they make you happy. Odd that people question it. As you said, it is personal to each of us what we consider essential to our wellbeing.
Lovely video, thank you. I would enjoy a video on the topic big where your "extra money" goes now? Are you paying off debt? Do you have different savings that you are adding to for one reason or another? I think this could turn into more than just a no spend year topic.
Another great video. Found you through your "no-buy" - so glad the TH-cam algorithms picked you up. Early riser (as you seem to be?) and book lover (although I don't read much fiction) so I resonate more with your ethos than most TH-camrs doing no-buys. 2020 will be a no-buy/low-buy for me (no in some categories, low in others). I have a bunch of stationery subscriptions that already renewed, but I won't renew them again, and make-up and skin care are on the no-buy side of the lists (I rarely use either yet spent thousands on them in the last 18 months). I'm going with High Days & Holidays as a theme as I had a tendency to buy things for all and sundry when ever I saw something I thought they would like, now gift giving must be restricted to their Birthdays and Christmas.
Thank you! It's lovely to meet you :D I'm afraid I'm not an early riser (I only wake up at 7am!), but I hope other parts of my ethos are relatable. That's amazing you're doing NB next year; very best of luck! It sounds like you've got your plan all laid out (:
Hand on heart, these past few days since I've been watching your videos, I have genuinely felt so inspired. Aside from the things I am contractually obligated to continue with (a TV/mobile/internet subscription I've already decided will be going and being downsized ASAP 😬), everything else will be on a need not want basis. Thank you 😊
I’ve been doing a no buy quarter for the first quarter for a couple years but my husband and I went full-time in our business this year and so I’m extending that to help offset the dip in income. No clothes (except a couple of new bras because yeah... mine are looking sad), shoes, accessories, cosmetics, books, sheet music (unless it’s for a student and I will use it again), video games, and home decor. I will be buying some paint and other supplies to finish my home studio because there is exposed, unfinished drywall in the room and it is stressing me out. Since I work in said studio for hours on end, I consider it an investment in my mental health. For real.
I really like the no-buy idea and think I will try it. But I have a problem with throwing out or down sizing perfectly good items, like makeup or cleaning items. So what I think I will do is pick my favorites as my keepers, and mark the expendables with an “X”. When the Xed ones are gone I will not replace them. But at least I had the advantage of using them and getting my monies worth. This will force me to use my stockpile of stuff and stop buying the newest thing. I am looking forward to the challenge for 2020.
I’ve not done an official no buy year, but I’ve been finishing things for the past 2/3 years. It’s amazing how much money this has saved me and how much better I feel about the products I own. Not getting overwhelmed by having 12 shampoos is such a nice place to be.
Very inspiring! And congratulations on recovering from anorexia and staying healthy. I work in the mental health area and I KNOW what a struggle it could be!

My partner and I decided to try a no-buy few months, because we want to save up to move into an apartment together by April. My rules are no fast food and restaurants, and nothing outside of food, gas, bills, cleaning products. the essential things. I have made one exception which is I can buy one thing a month that’s $20 or less. The catch is, it can’t be junk food. it has to be something i can use over and over like nail polish or something, and for every new item i bring home, i have to rid my room of one or two other items. 😁 I’m excited to see the results!
You'll find this funny, but your nail story has been of much help to me because since I was a kid I 've had very bad nails, easily infected in hands and toes. My hands' seem to have gotten better (I also paint then all the time or they just break easily), but my toes' are in a terrible state atm, they grow and break non-stop, and nobody seems to know why. So hey, thank you for sharing this
Thank you so much! I'm sorry you've also suffered from nail problems (they can be really embarrassing). Well done for cutting down so much of your stuff; it sounds like you're well on your way to an NBY - you're certainly already doing a low-buy (:
New subscriber here. I have been thinking about my spending habits. I have been retired for two years, but this last year I got into paper crafting. Now I have a room full of supplies which I need to make. I need to use my “stash”. I have just been buying and buying. Now I need to get busy and creating things. I have been creating things, but I need to stop buying and use what I have. I also sew and crochet. So me being bored is not an option. Plus I love to read. I am so glad your video popped up on my feed. I am willingly accepting the No Buy challenge for 2020.
I agree with you about fake nails. I have severe ridges and splits in my nails, a genetic thing, and I've gone 3 years without fake nails but I find it so hard to do anything without those strong nails. I'm always tearing my nails, so this year, even though I'm joining you on this adventure, I will be adding to my buying by getting fake nails again. 😀 I'm taking this slowly as I have an all or nothing personality. So this month, I am doing a "if you bought it, use it!" challenge. I waste a LOT of food. Which makes me feel bad, wasteful and it isn't just the money. It's the environment. I buy food for dinner and then we decide to go out. So now I'm going shopping every 2 days for food, and allowing 2 dinners/lunches out a week. And batch cooking!
I love your positive attitude. This is not a deprivation mindset. I think it’s quite reasonable to allow for some experiences in your exceptions. Those memories of going to a special ballet can be really meaningful.
I came across you and realized ive been doing this by accident. My husband and I live in Korea (military) and I have been trying to move away from shopping as something to do when I'm bored. We have both agreed to a no buy year...and since I'm Vegan and he is a Vegetarian it isn't too hard to not go out and eat...it's all meat out here lol. I appreciate this though it helps set the pace for January and the year. I hope you have a lovely holiday and a great new year.
Wow, so interesting to hear of a vegan/vegetarian in Korea! Well done working through all the cultural obstacles, you're a shining example to the doubters out there (: Have a wonderful holidays and new year x
I'm joining late, oops! This video was helpful. I have a slightly different approach. I'm not getting rid of anything as I already did a massive declutter before Christmas. But my rule is that if I still have any items that I kept in my declutter in 1 year then I have to give them away then. I'm challenging myself to use up more of my things with this rule! I have so many cosmetics and skin care items to use this year, I was so caught up in buying new things I never even got to enjoy what I had!! My no buy year is mostly focused on those types of products as I definitely have enough already. Thanks for sharing your rules!
Thanks !! It's really inspiring. I gonna try next month to calm down my consumption and have a better idea of what I really need. So thanks for your rules... And who knows? Maybe I will continue in March and April.
I am doing this for 2020. My rules are a little different, more specific exceptions, but I really like this idea and I'm excited to be more mindful of what I already have. Thank you!
I’m going into my first No Buy year, and I’m actually really excited about it. I’ll be in the midst of planning my wedding so I want to funnel what I NEED there instead of other places.
I like to think about the things that are essential to our health and happiness. We are just including the things we need & a few little joys: Joy is essential! Makes it easy 👌
About nails: I have a weak spot on just one nail that becomes painfully thin. But drinking a food type product with 45% (more or less) RDA calcium added to it healed the weak spot and made all my nails really strong. Taking calcium supplements did nothing. It has to be an additive in almond milk or aloe Vera juice or something like that. I think it has something to do with how the body absorbs nutrition from food.
I am proud of you for not buying products with processed sugar. it changed my life for the better ❤️❤️❤️ Just also, if I may suggest you, try to avoid aspartam and other sweeteners that are said to be better because the insulin doesn't shoot high. Its still synthetical some researches suggest it has to do something with multiple Sklerose
I wouldn't think giving up buying books would be so hard in this day and age. You can borrow from the library, both physical and digital. There's tons of free apps for auto books. Lots of great blogs etc. For me going into it this year it's going to be clothing and make up. I'm not going to give away any of my current collection, but I'm going to set up my weekly choices.
I adored this video! I am almost done decluttering my stuff and about to donate the items I couldn’t sell but are in great condition. It took me a while to narrow down what I really need but I already feel like it will help me get more done going forward. Thanks to this video I will make my own 2020 no buy rules and put it in the notebook I carry everyday.
Really great video! I've been planning on doing a no buy year but thought of it as self-punishment but as you say, it doesn't have to be that way. It would be really interesting if you could film your next wardrobe decluttering, I need to get rid of more clothes, but it is not an easy process...
Thank you! I may show the items I'm getting rid of, but I'm probably not going to be able to film my wardrobe because I share my bedroom with my partner and it's his space and I have to respect that he probably doesn't want his space and privacy put online to strangers (:
Hello, I have just discovered you and binged about 5 videos already. I feel very inspired by you and you manage to make sustainability and no buy ideas very manageable and attainable. 2020 is definitely going to be a low buy year for me and I really enjoy your suggestions. Xx
I did the No-Spend challenge this year for the first time and was amazed by how little I missed buying "stuff". I also challenged myself to read all of the unread books on my shelf (over 80) and was not allowed to buy any more until I achieved that. I am 1 book away from completing my TBR, have unhauled over 100 books that I will not read again, and have borrowed almost 50 books from the library (so I was still able to read new releases but for FREE). I did buy some books this year, primarily those published by people I knew and wanted to support, as well as a few that were not available at the library. Most of those were purchased using gift cards that were given to me the previous Yuletide. I am going to continue the No-Spend challenge for 2020, but changing the perimeters a bit. I like your rule of only buying ONE beauty/bodycare product and using that before buying more. I used to stock up on lotions and such (to a degree it was completely unreasonable), not realizing they had a shelf life that would definitely expire before I had a chance to use everything I had in the cupboard. With regard to makeup, I do buy 2 of each item at a time but have found a cruelty free line of products that is really reasonably priced, so I can get a full face for under $30. Great video! Thanks for posting.
This video is very helpful. I'm thinking of doing a kind of a no buy challenge in the beginning of the year and see where it goes after that. You gave me some ideas about making my rules for it 🌷
Just stumbled across your channel. Love it! Love your topics, and love your energy. You have inspired me to give this No Buy Year idea a go! I have done 'Buy Nothing New month' before in October, but never a whole year! Eep! This sounds like a very exciting challenge! Will have to look back over your videos about your No Buy 2019 as well now. I love being money savvy, and living in more sustainable and intentional ways. This sounds like all of these things at once!!
I didn’t buy any new items for myself in 2019 except for one pair of work shoes! Very proud of myself:0) made me rethink about my consumerism. I still enjoyed buying for my friends and family though 💗
Yay! I was hoping you'd do one for 2020. We decided that 2020 would be our no buy year back in September and since then have been (cheating) stocking up on things I KNOW we'd want to buy. This included a new pair of shoes for each of us, magazine subscriptions, a meditation app, Netflix and Prime subscriptions... I know it's probably cheating, but I wanted to set us up for success. We've also given ourselves a very small monthly allowance we can spend on anything we like. Outside of that, we are banning eating out unless we're invited to dinner with friends, clothing/shoes, movies, concerts, books (like you I probably have 100 unread books in my house), lattes, and really any material "thing." We're looking forward to living as we did when we were newly married and BROKE (21 years ago!). We had so much fun making our own fun. Good luck to everyone!
I'm really considering doing this. Right now, I'm living abroad in Asia. Everything (clothes, shoes, books, etc) is so cheap. I don't have to worry a lot about saving money (right now its easy to save a decent amount regardless) but I'm really considering doing a version of this where instead of buying junk, I use my disposable income for more experiences to make memories. Thanks for the inspiration girl!
Second-hand shops are always a good shot. It's amazing what you can actually get there AND how little you have to pay for it. It's often not even stuff, that had been used that much and is like superbroken. NOPE. Many times it's just an item someone bought, didn't need/ only used very few times and gave it away. That counts for almost everything, but especially clothes and books. Second-hand books are most often pretty good. Me personally I only buy new permanent books for my shelf, if I've already read them in the past (like Harry Potter, Hunger games, stuff from Dan Brown, Brandon Sanderson...), enjoyed them incredibly and am going to read them several times more. Otherwise I exchange/ share books with friends & family or buy them second-hand and sell or gift them to someone else later. I would use a library too, but unfortunately the ones in my area only have a very limited collection. Still I can sincerely recommend this strategy ^-^! Have a nice day folks 👋🏻.
Nails are my only beauty routine monthly and that was the first thing I questioned. I discussed this with my husband and agreed that I could get my nails done monthly. I also have thin nails that break.
I realised during my gap year as an aupair that I don't need much stuff, because I could only buy as much as would fit in my suitcase in the way back. That was 5 years ago and I kinda kept that mentality, but I think I'm gonna try and buy even less this year. Especially clothes and crafting supplies: I got into sewing last year and bought tons of second hand fabric so I really need to start sewing my own clothes 😅 I'm not gonna limit the amount of traveling I'm planning on, but since I'll be interrailing I'll try and find cheaper hostels, cook my own food and do more free experiences (free walking tours, museums etc) There's one thing that would save me quite some money and which I could easily stop doing, but I won't. Donating. I donated almost 300€ in 2019 to different causes and I don't regret a single cent.
I enjoy these videos more than I thought I would! I like that you maintain rather than just restrict everything so I can see from this method/mind set you can do this "challenge" indefinitely.
I'm so glad you're enjoying these videos (: Maintenance is healthier than restriction - there are some things I obviously restrict myself from like solo lattes, but I don't need these things. I like keeping my life as I can and I think that's a nicer way to look at life.
Thanks I enjoyed this so much! I'm trying a no buy year in 2020 but just going to approach it one month at a time and not be too hard on myself if I slip up. Hopefully I can just be more conscious about what I buy and be less wasteful.
My mom had a house Fire a few days before Christmas so I have been helping her clean up. Pretty much everything in her house has soot and smoke damage. As I was helping her go through stuff to find personal items, family photos etc I found a LOT of items that she hadn’t been using, items she got very cheap at thrift stores or got for free somewhere but it was stuff she wasn’t using. It made me realize I don’t ever want to have a home filled with material items I don’t need. I really want to minimize what I have and stop buying more. I would love to look into trying no buy.
Thanks so much for sharing. Very helpful as I contemplate the upcoming year. You’ve inspired me to be self-reflective and stick to truly investing in myself, whatever I decide that means.
This is amazing! I’m not in a good place to start doing a no-buy but with your advice I’m fascinated to start thinking about it. I don’t buy new much, but I do but too much. 😊
I didn’t know you suffered with anorexia. I’m so happy that you’re so healthy now. I really like your no buy videos. That’s going to be my 2020 support resource ☺️ thanks for the inspiration. Happy new year!
I'm SO glad you shared about why you have artificial nails! I too have horrible nails from unknown causes (don't know that I have Reynaud's, but I am Hashimoto's and am always cold and don't have the best circulation, sooo...). In addition...I am a CUTICLE FARMER! When I wear artificial nails, the ragged, bleeding, splitting fingertips/cuticles (which literally keep me up at night with the pain, no matter what I try to put on them) are very minimal. But I'm glad you shared, I am new to your channel and wondered about your nails, too. Also, it's so nice to see a fellow bibliophile, and I'm glad you understand that when you love and curate and care for things, they aren't necessarily clutter. Much love from a new fan. =)
Thank goodness a few other people have forward and shared their nail horrors! It's so great to know I'm not alone. It's lovely to meet you, happy new year (:
I am a new subcriber to you channel and I am enjoying your talks. 🥰 I have, in the past year done no buy months. This year I have a list of no buy items for the year. I also have a list of the replacement items I can or need to purchase. 2 Years ago I purged my wardrobe and created a capsule wardrobe with minimal, cohesive colors. I am down to less than 50 items of clothing. Most can be worn year round. All can go together. This includes my shoes and excessaries as well. I am not aloud to buy makeup this year unless replacing foundation, powder or concealer. We never buy apps. I read a lot. (2-3 books a week) So I did a budget for books and Amazon has a $10 monthly fee book deal. It was worth it for me. So I "rent" all I can read for $10 a month. I can cancel at any time if not working out. The library is free so any book I can't "rent" I get there. We only have Internet no cable tv. We have netflix and Disney yearly fees. Way cheaper than Cable tv. Eatting out once a month. I am a Vegitarian so my food is not as expensive as a meat eater. My husband and son eat meat though, just not every day. We have invested in an Insta Pot for fast cooking meals. (We both work 40+hours a week) It has helped us not get fast food out or eat out. I have started meal planning. Having food for us to just dump in the pot is a huge help in saving on the food budget and it helps with waste. We dont go out to the movies often, so I have set up a list of what we would like to see in the coming year. About 4 movies for the family this year. I find budgeting for the year is so helpful. It lets us know what are cost of wants and needs are going to be. I am an Artist. This is my weakness in spending. So this year I am on a no buy plan for art supplies. I can only purchase replacement watercolor paint, drawing pens and paper when I run out. I can't purchase any new colors, only replace the ones I use. Your talks are inspirational! Thanks for all the help!
I decided to do essentially a "no buy" year this year before I saw this. My restrictions are art, office, stationery, and craft supplies, no alcohol, meals out only 1x a month. I don't wear make up, and i have such a minimal wardrobe I struggle to have enough clothes to wear in a week. But i won't be buying toys for the kids outside of birthdays and Christmas and will thrift and declutter things I don't need in my spaces. I am committing to using up things before I replace them and making what I need from what I have...
I have been unintentionally doing this. I decluttered so much! Then I found myself asking why I had certain things which made me realize how often I bought or accepted gifts that I would never use. It's been very eye-opening. Also, I LOVE STATIONARY TOO!
Thank you for this video. I will try a low buy to no buy year in 2020. My rules are, as you no makeup, clothing or stuff like that (I have more than enough) IF I want something I can only buy it if it has a purpose in my daily routine AND I have been needed it for more than three times. I can replace empty and/or broken products. And every time I succeed whit not buying something, the price of that item I will put into my savings.
I'm a beginner, Im trying it for a month. I'm happy to hear you go out with friends every month because that is what I normally do and I have a monthly budget just for that entertainment. This month I was going to try to cut my normal bill in half.
Before seeing this, my fiancé and I talked about doing a no buy year. We are not shopping (for non essentials) and use up what we already have (which is SO much 😬😬) we are allowing ourselves to have 1 date night a month (eating out is what we spend way too much money on). But we are going to embrace being homebodies.
Thank you (: Happy new Year!
I think I have said this before, but I love how you make sure that the things that you do (like a no buy year) are about content and reflecting instead of restricting or validation (from others). It is inspiring and makes it do-abe and enjoyable to change (in a healthy way)! Thanks for being so open
Thank you
Public Libraries are the answer for a not buying year and for almost everything else in life...
@Asia S M as long as you're actually reading the books that you buy, there's nothing to be ashamed of! (*cough cough* I personally tend to p_rate epubs on my phone though *loud cough*)
@Asia S M See if they can order books from other libraries. Bet they can. You save big that way.
A tip : watch series on Kaldrostream. Been using it for watching loads of movies these days.
@Amos Ismael Definitely, been watching on kaldrostream for months myself =)
@Amos Ismael Yea, been using KaldroStream for since december myself =)
I had 5 open jars of mustard in my fridge as of yesterday’s check. I will not buy too much mustard this year.
It's the little things 😂 I can't tell you how many jars of pickles we have
That's a great start!
Omg love that, I need to do the same with hot sauce 😂
I respectfully disagree with getting rid of stuff. Keep the excess and use it when you run out of your main stuff to delay replacing the product imo..
Kimmy I totally agree with you! I think I’m going to do a combination of this for example put away/store the things I know I will use later and toss or rehome the things I know I won’t use again.
I agree! I was going to comment this too.
Eyeshadow palettes tend to go out of date 12 months after you open them - for hygiene reasons it's best not to stretch this date too much.
Yes! I questioned that as well!
You could add using your nearest public library as well, if you have one nearby. I just started again this year and it is great!
Sounds genius!
Library.
For used books you can look on thriftbooks. com!
What a good way to read the books I've purchased, but never read! 😣
Thank you, Jane! I'm so happy to hear you're doing a NBY, best of luck!!
Good luck Jane, I hear you sister!
Good luck!!
Good luck I did it last year and it was the best decision I could have made! You’ll be great!
My 2020 NBY year rules are:
1. Buy no running shoes - reduce my total amount of shoes I own throughout the year, by wearing through them
2. Buy no clothes - think about the clothes I currently own and decide which ones to keep heading into 2021
3. Buy no supplements except replacements
My no buy rules:
1. No buying clothes & accessories
2. No buying desserts
3. No buying books
4. No buying shoes
*"A lot of you are new to my channel because you found me through my no buy year in review"*
That's me! Hello :D
Hello! Lovely to meet you x
Same here and I'm really enjoying the channel.
Me too!
The color of your sweater and lipstick are so pretty. Great look. I love your videos. I’m so glad I found you. You’re so interesting. Thanks
Thank you so much, Lisa :D I'm super grateful for you being here x
I only have four more days left on my no spend year. It's been interesting and productive. It's definitely changed how I live my life. It's wonderful. Oh....and I didn't start off with this goal in mind but a huge benefit is that I now have zero debt.
Well done for nearly completing it (:
@@CinziaDuBois Thank you. The first two months were the hardest because it required constant thought to reshape my habits but by March it was much easier. Now it's just second nature to live thoughtfully. :)
That is so cool!! No debt AND thoughtful living??? Way to go, you!!!
Try eating jelly if you’re not against it (say if you’re vegan) I did when I was recovering from my eating disorder it massively helps ❤️
Threadup is a great place to get second hand clothes. I bought a winter coat that is really lovely and very warm.
Best of luck :D
I would really like to see a regular update on the now buy. Thing like what you replaced, what you struggled with not buying, or not struggled with at all. If there was something you really wanted but talked yourself out of buying and how did you talk you’re self out of it. Thing you did or didn’t do with you’re money etc. love to see more! Lots of love. Esmeralda
Finally an eloquent, sensible TH-camr with a sense of humour and eclectic interests... I am so grateful to whichever algorithm put you on my screen 🙏
I, too have found great satisfaction, joy and dare I say growth, in my no-buy year.
Thank you (: Best of luck in 2020!
Thank you so much, Jennifer, I'm glad I manage to deliver messages that way (:
Good luck....
After doing a successful no buy year it seems one would learn what is most important. Experiences that enrich our lives are important. Good job!
This video couldn't have come at a better time! You inspired me to do no-buy for 2020 as I save for my wedding next fall, and I'll definitely add some of your rules to my list
Ahhh, amazing! Best of luck on your NBY and your wedding (:
*My YEP, YOU CAN DO IT list:*
--supporting small artists (including small-venue music shows)
--gifts for others (and materials for making gifts for those others)
--Travelling to see family
--Adding vacation days to academic conferences (I'm already scheduled for one and will probably go to two)
--Groceries (freezer rule: 1 in 1 out)
--Maintaining beauty regime (a gel manicure every month)
--Findings and needs for destashing my fabric stash
--Educational/Academic pursuits (I've tried to use the library for books I need for my PhD, but I need to write all over them and keep many for reference)
--1 drink while out with friends (alcoholic or coffee based)
--gym/fitness
--1 new videogame per college break (spring, summer, fall, and winter breaks)
I might even vlog about it...we'll see.
Anyway, this is a breath of fresh air and hope in a world that is low on it thank you
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, I relate to it more than you can imagine. Take care of yourself and best of luck for 2020!
Amazing!! Best of luck, Candi :D
Gwen Bardon sounds great! Smart idea.
Take note of everything in your freezer and make a written plan to use them. Otherwise you'll keep buying stuff at the grocery store. $$$
I agree! A year seems stressful to me. I’m going to start monthly also
I love all these, and I support the idea of keeping a couple things that may seem frivolous to some that are actually very personal to you.
I have been clearing out more and more "things" I don't need. I have been energized to do more thanks to your videos.
Oh my goodness, that's amazing to hear! Well done, Cathy :D
Thanks, Linda. I totally agree!
Lovely video, thank you. I would enjoy a video on the topic big where your "extra money" goes now? Are you paying off debt? Do you have different savings that you are adding to for one reason or another? I think this could turn into more than just a no spend year topic.
Thank you for both commenting and the suggestion. I'll make a video on it (:
Awe, watching this at the end of 2020 hearing about the hope to go one weekends away. Little did we know! Here's to 2021 being better!
Thank you 😊
That's wonderful to hear, best of luck with everything Adèle!
I have decided my no buy rules for 2020
-I can only 2nd hand clothes
-No makeup
-No skin care
-No body care
---Only replacements
-No Jewelry
That's what I did for the last two years and it's worked out great. And my skin looks fine, too. =) Good luck, it's such a rewarding way to live!
Renee Handlucci yup that’s my list too . I have a bit of a skin care product addiction lol
Very inspiring! And congratulations on recovering from anorexia and staying healthy. I work in the mental health area and I KNOW what a struggle it could be!
Thank you very much (:
You speak so much truth in this video, I actually had to pause to let it all sink in. Absolutely adore you and your channel
Love this and
Thank you so much, Fawzia

Thank you so much, Fawzia! I don't use Insta anymore, but my design stuff has come a long way since those uploads (:
My partner and I decided to try a no-buy few months, because we want to save up to move into an apartment together by April. My rules are no fast food and restaurants, and nothing outside of food, gas, bills, cleaning products. the essential things. I have made one exception which is I can buy one thing a month that’s $20 or less. The catch is, it can’t be junk food. it has to be something i can use over and over like nail polish or something, and for every new item i bring home, i have to rid my room of one or two other items. 😁 I’m excited to see the results!
I also have reynauds and crap nails! I'd never connected the two before but it makes total sense!
Thank you for the No Buy Year motivation. It’s challenging but I can definitely see the benefits.
Lovely to meet you, Debra! Thank you so much for subscribing. Best of luck on your NBY!
I'm taking this slowly as I have an all or nothing personality.
Best of luck, that's an awesome challenge :D
I love your positive attitude. This is not a deprivation mindset. I think it’s quite reasonable to allow for some experiences in your exceptions. Those memories of going to a special ballet can be really meaningful.
Thank you so much (:
I did a no buy in 2018. One thing I thought was going to be really hard was art supplies and yarn. It it wasn’t bad. I should do it again!
You;'re welcome, best of luck with everything!
Loved your sweater in this video. Your videos are great for the new year and getting goals set in place!
I am proud of you for not buying products with processed sugar.
it changed my life for the better ❤️❤️❤️
Just also, if I may suggest you, try to avoid aspartam and other sweeteners that are said to be better because the insulin doesn't shoot high.
You're welcome!! Thank you for commenting and best of luck on your NBY
Amazing work; well done!!!
Thank you. I am really proud of this accomplishment because I was rather precious about my books.
I love your energy and kind directness. I am on board with a no buy 2020!
Thank you (: Happy New year!
I’m gonna do low buy with a emphasis on fast food
I felt that >.
I should do that to. Fast Food/Snacks are probably my biggest spending "item" 😭
It's gonna be difficult but I'm going to try the same 😔
I spent 130USD on McDonald's alone one month. I feel you
This video is very helpful. I'm thinking of doing a kind of a no buy challenge in the beginning of the year and see where it goes after that. You gave me some ideas about making my rules for it 🌷
I’m starting with a no buy month. I’m glad you addressed the make-up and nails. My beauty must have is keeping up on dying my hair.
Well done, Ellie!
Amazing to hear, Emily!! Best of luck to you both, have an amazing 2020!
Best of luck, girl!
You don't have to defend your use of fake nails - you don't need to respond to haters - you set your own rules. Isn't that the point?
I realised during my gap year as an aupair that I don't need much stuff, because I could only buy as much as would fit in my suitcase in the way back. That was 5 years ago and I kinda kept that mentality, but I think I'm gonna try and buy even less this year. Especially clothes and crafting supplies: I got into sewing last year and bought tons of second hand fabric so I really need to start sewing my own clothes 😅
I'm not gonna limit the amount of traveling I'm planning on, but since I'll be interrailing I'll try and find cheaper hostels, cook my own food and do more free experiences (free walking tours, museums etc)
There's one thing that would save me quite some money and which I could easily stop doing, but I won't.
Best of luck, Ashley!
hi I would tend to call what you are doing is frugal as I only replace when things have run out
This is amazing!
@@CinziaDuBois Lovely to meet you, too! Thank you and happy new year 2020!
I am a new subcriber to you channel and I am enjoying your talks. 🥰
I have, in the past year done no buy months.
(We both work 40+hours a week)
It has helped us not get fast food out or eat out.
You're SUPER inspirational, Melissa! Thank you for sharing all of this!! xx
Best of luck!!
I'm a beginner, Im trying it for a month. I'm happy to hear you go out with friends every month because that is what I normally do and I have a monthly budget just for that entertainment. This month I was going to try to cut my normal bill in half.
Thank you for your honesty. I am excited for my no buy journey.
You're welcome, Lee. Best of luck!
You’ve inspired me!! Thanks for the rule video no-but feels so much more attainable now
Before seeing this, my fiancé and I talked about doing a no buy year. We are not shopping (for non essentials) and use up what we already have (which is SO much 😬😬) we are allowing ourselves to have 1 date night a month (eating out is what we spend way too much money on). But we are going to embrace being homebodies.
