Good video, one bit you got wrong, its Delia Smith, not Delilah.
exactly!
1:05:00 - As a bolton fan Fabrice's moment has always stayed with me, despite only being 11 at the time. The crazy thing is, the medical team certainly saved his life, but it was actually a Spurs fan who got onto the pitch who saved his future. The fan happened to be a cardiologist and told them to go straight to a cardiology specialist hospital instead of the closest general hospital, it no doubt saved his ability to recover most of his mental function.
The guy lives round the corner from me too!

At 1:25:06 there's a cut regarding Eddy Hamel, that basically took out the entire story. For the audience, I did a bit of reading to find out what he was all about, and it's honestly worse than you can imagine.
Eddy Hamel was an American right back who played for AFC Ajax between 1922 and 1930, and became the club's first-ever Jewish player. Though he was born in America, his parents were Dutch, and they moved back to the Netherlands when he was six months old. He stopped playing football in 1930, and had a brief stint as a manager.
After the N@zi invasion of the Netherlands in 1940, local F*scist groups assisted the N@zis in rounding up local Jews, of which Hamel was one. In 1942, despite his American heritage, he was detained and sent to a labor camp in Birkenau, where he stayed for four months. During a N@zi inspection, he was found to have had a swollen abscess in his mouth, and so he was sent to Auschwitz, where he was then sent to a gas chamber. Absolutely horrific.
There was one particular story you kinda missed here. I first read it in a football magazine as a kid and it deeply shocked me back then.
On August 11th, 1979, the team of FC Pakhtakor Tashkent were on board a plane flying from Tashkent, Uzbek SSR, to Minsk, Belarussian SSR, to play an away match. The flight included stops in Atyrau (Kazakh SSR) and Donetsk (Ukrainian SSR). At approximately 13:35 local time the plane collided with another aircraft flying from Chelyabinsk, RSFSR, to Chisinau, Moldavian SSR, at an altitude of 8,400 m inside a cloud. The Minsk plane crashed its wing inside the Chisinau plane's pilot cabin, instantly killing all the pilots and cutting the entire aircraft into several parts. The Minsk flight crew, despite their aircraft losing a tail pin, an engine and a part of a wing, tried to perform an emergency landing, but at 3,800 m they lost control over the plane, which hit the ground shortly afterwards.
All of the 178 people on board both flights were killed, including 17 members of FC Pakhtakor football team (15 players and 2 coaches). The youngest player on the team, Sirojiddin Bazarov, had only turned 18 the day before, and was supposed to fly to Minsk with the reserves squad, but was late for his flight and went with the first team instead. Mikhail An, the captain of the club and also of the USSR national football team, wasn't required to fly with his teammates due to being injured but he was persuaded to go with the rest of the squad to 'boost the squad's morale'.
The investigation proved that the catastrophe happened due to ATC error. The ATC manager wrongly interpreted the position of the plane. which led to failing to adjust the two aircrafts' altitudes and to avoid the collision. I has also been noted that, due to Leonid Brezhnev reportedly flying to Crimea on the same day, the aircraft corridors were overloaded in order to make way for the leader's plane.
Eventually, the two ATC specialists that were in charge on the crash day were both sentenced to 15 years in penal colony. One of them, Nikolay Zhukovsky, reportedly committed suicide; however, according to others, he served his 15-year sentence and 'died on his own'. The other, Vladimir Sumy, served 6.5 years and was released on parole.
The Congo one might be true, but that footage is from the South African "Premier Soccer League" game.
Two more incidents that would belong here:
- Sascha Lewandowski, a German football coach who took his life after being accused of pedophilia
- Chile at the 1974 World Cup. Chile had to play a qualification playoff against the Soviet Union but the Soviet team refused to play in Santiago as the stadium was the site of tortures and murders of dissidents in Pinochet's regime after the coup in 1973. The match was played anyway, without a Soviet team present on the pitch. Chile went on to take part in the 1974 World Cup in West Germany.
Was he a pedophile though?
One more addition could have been the A Chapecoense Crash, in which they were a team in the Brazilian league and they had been on a streak of going up divisions, and qualified for the sul-americana, they went really well in the competition and qualified for the final, but on the way to the game, they crashed their plane in which most of the people inside died, including most pf the players of the team, team staff, the flight attendants, and the pilot. It was a horrible moment in Brazil, and I remember waking up and see my mom almost crying looking at the news that the plane had crashed, it was an agonizing day. After a few days it was discovered that only 3 of the players had survived the accident, but only one made a full recovery while the other two lost limbs. A truly horrible story, after a few months of the crash the team had honorarily won the sul-americana, and was allowed to rebuild their team without the fear of relegation for two years. They also played a friendly with Barcelona at the Camp Nou, where they played against Messi which was a dream for all of them.
My girlfriend is Zambian so I know about the Zambia air crash just horrible it was.
When they won AFCON 2012 the Zambia team was 25 miles from the crash site. I'm a Liverpool fan my grandmother survived Hillsborough and said how horrible it was

Loved this video and brought me a tear in my eye (a mournful tear, sadly). I knew more of a PL fan, but loved how you covered southamerican football (especially the events involving Argentina, which...damn, they were quite a few).
I would add two events to the tip of the Iceberg (if you would like to look into it): Sao Paulo - Tigre, Copa Sudamericana Finals. In Brazil, after a 2-0 lead at the first half, SP supporters and the police threatened Tigre team with guns, and the argentine team refuse to play the 2nd half. This resulted in SP winning the trophy. Luckily, just a big fking threat. They will face each other again tomorrow (27/6).
And lower would add the Chapecoense's tragedy in 2016. Similar to what happened to Sala, but almost a whole Brazilian team when they were travelling from Bolivia to Colombia to face Atlético Nacional for the Sudamericana Finals.
Vizeh has made a video on this tragedy. Link: th-cam.com/video/PvOJs8fs1Pk/w-d-xo.html

A disaster you could have mentionned is the 1949 Superga incident, where the entire team of Torino (nicknamed "Grande Torino", because it was one of the best teams in Italy) died in a plane crash. Since then, Torino won a title in the 70's, and played a UEFA in the 90's, but never got back to thei level. Some years ago it came back in the news because of some Juve ultra mocking it during a game, which also really pissed the legendary Inter midfielder Sandro Mazzola, son of Valentino, one of the best attacker of his time and a victim in Superga.
One of their greatest player in the 60's, Gigi Meroni (who scored a beautiful goal against the great Inter of Herrera, who were defeated after 3 years WITHOUT LOOSING), got killed in a car accident, the one who killed him being ironically...a Torino fan. They really seem kinda cursed.
But anyways it's a really good video !

Which is no go topic for TH-cam which explains it being cut from the video
Man i love these videos. I dont see many documentary type videos on football, or really any topic i like, and you have done and are doing a fantastic job with filling in that area
Well researched topics displayed in a way that keeps me interested and i will say, keeps me coming back because this content is something i can watch several times and still be interested

Isn’t this just all your other ice bergs combined? Majority of these stories you already featured in other videos
the barbossa story is so sad how can you do something like that to a person who defended the team i'd say very well, because if uruguway was so good they would easily score even 7 goals past him but they only scored 2 im sorry for this man he deserved better
“For 50 years I didn’t commit the crime” Uhhh oh ffs Nevermind the whole story is not good. Then again we never have to go through this, right?

Great video. By the way, the Thunder and Lightning incident happened in South Africa. it was a match in the early 2000s or late 90s. was watching the game or saw it in the news as a young kid. I can recognize one of the clubs as Moroka Swallows, the club in Maroon. its not related to witchcraft. When it rains in the City of Johannesburg, sometimes it is accompanied by severe lightning. it happens occassionaly, a few times a year.
ok, but can you tell me exactly why a lot of them went to the ground? It was because of the noise?

1:19:27 Just a heads up that the "Death Match" (according to sources on wikipedia) was soviet propaganda and the players didnt actually play a game of life and death. it was just a normal football match and the whole story just came up afterwards to inspire the ukrainian population that survived the german occupation. some members of the football team did get arrested and killed later on during the occupation but not in retaliation to the football match.
Great Video either way, enjoyed watching it a lot.
love this type of video,Keep up the good work mate!
The Greg Akcelrod part has a bit of an inaccuracy. CSKA Sofia never actually qualified for the Champions' league of 08/09. In fact, they did not even play any of the qualifying rounds they needed to win to qualify.

Great stuff, thanks for putting this together sir!
Fluminense X Lagartense (Brazil's third division, 1999) a folkloric match sheet that shows a match between the recent Relegated Fluminense and a semi-professional team from Lagarto, Sergipe. On that match sheet there's some bizarre Lagartense's player names like Gato (cat) Cego (Blind) and others. For many years was a common-sense that this match really happened but the goals and best momments were lost midia, and the score was Lagartense 3x0. But it all was a mock made by rival Rio's team to swear out the desperated Fluminense situation.
The first video I've seen from you... will definitely be subscribing and watching more!!!!
this was a great and a really sad video, well researched and executed. good job man it did not even feel like 2 hours

the lightening strike incident seems to have taken place in South Africa. To think this is less than a year ago and you’re nearly 100k more subs than this video.
Deserved in my opinion, nice to see long form videos done in a not as formal as the Athletic style.
Why is there nothing about German football? One easy story that's more interesting than most premier league incidents here: literally every Schalke v Dortmund game from the first 40 years of Bundesliga. Schalke brought a lion onto the pitch to scare Dortmund after a dog bit a Schalke player in the prior derby match. And that's a boring story in comparison.
But football seems to be a premier league only thing...
Sorry I'm obviously very biased but it made me sad to not see any cool story about the bundesliga

Just so you know. Pablo Escobar bankrolled both Atletico Nacional and Independiente Medellin, and was a fan of the latter. Also, he was already dead when Colombia played the 1994 World Cup. Andres Escobar's assassination was deemed to be a result of Pablo Escobar's absence, as he was reportedly very protective and fond of the national team's players; as such, had he been alive, Andres Escobar may have not been murdered, as Pablo wouldn't have allowed it otherwise.
