Top shelf guys. I bought one of these bikes a while back. It was garage stored for years and in amazing shape. I have been slowly rebuilding it this past winter, suspension re and re and everything thoroughly checked and replaced as needed. Your videos are an absolute goldmine.
I knew about timing them with the flywheel marks but aligning the cam marks without the bolts and then turning the cam to align the bolt holes was new to me. Very good idea. Great job RM!

yeap, I was just considering a 4-stroke 450 since I sold my YZ 250 a few years back. These 2 videos put me off, I'm getting a 250 two stroke again, maybe a 500 if I can afford it. (But the video was helpful and great to watch, learned a lot about 4 strokes)
TIP - Put the keepers in the retainer first then using spring compressor. As your compressing put your finger over the retainer to hold the keepers in place!!
You made these videos like a month before I'm buying a 2005 450 that needs a top end. The timing is perfect because these videos are great. The guy I'm buying my bike from says that is lacks compression. Is there anything I should expect to have to fix besides the top end? Even if I spend 1000 on the bike I'll be within the budget for the price I got the bike for
Do the compression test, check your valves, and you might as well to a cam chain since they're cheap and easy to change out. I'm sure the bike has a lot of hours on it so make sure to really check the cylinder wall for damage. New spark plug.
Not sure if anyone here can help but i got a cylinder works 100mm over bore kit for a 2008 crf450r and the gaskets i got are identical to the stock gaskets the base i would understand although it doesn't want to slip over the outside of the new cylinder without bending and rolling the edges but the top literally hangs inside of the cylinder and would get hit by the piston if i were to install it. I think they sent me a stock kit instead of an overbored version. Anybody know what size gasket it would need to be? I assume 101 or 102 mm if the cylinder bore is 100.
When you line up your time and marks and you put your chain tensioner in it moves the cam gear a little bit is that OK ? or do I got to compensate for that Movement
Valve shims are the hardest part about rebuilding the top end because you have to do simple math but it’s not rocket science , there’s a lot of videos on TH-cam about timing and valve shims
It all depends on the condition of the valves, if they are cupped, pitted, bent or have any other wear or damage, then yes. You would want to have the new valves before machining the head because they need to match up to the seats when you're done. If the valves are like new, then all I'd worry about is the contact pattern. We just lightly used the cutters on our seats to clean them up and make sure the contact pattern was correct. If there was serious damage to the seats you would probably need to replace the valves as well. -Charles
my service manual mentions nothing about timing this timing mark (12:20) kinda makes sense why my compression timing wasnt right when i did everything else the way it instructs, it does mention timing from the right sight of the crank case while the engine is in tdc, but my cam chain must be out of sync with the marking? or if the right side is in line will the left side be too pls help xDD. Second edit maybe i put my cam gear in 180 degrees backwards is that possible?
th-cam.com/video/mMWLygPpvNQ/w-d-xo.html We covered the marks better in part one, so check that out. You can also use a long screwdriver down the spark plug hole to verify TDC, since it can be kind of hard to see when the timing marks are perfectly lined up. The cam sprocket will line up the same either way, just make sure the marks are facing out like in the video. -Charles
Unfortunately, that Motion Pro tool has been discontinued but there is one from Pro Honda that should do the trick. Just make sure to enter your bike's year, make and model to ensure this will work. Pro Honda Cam Sprocket Holder- www.rockymountainatvmc.com/parts/pro-honda-cam-sprocket-holder-p
Hey guys, im jdoing a trx450r i just picked up for a good price because it leaked oil from the base gasket. just took the top end apart to replace the gasket, seen the top end has very low hours so went to reassemble and i cant get the chain back on the cam gear.TDC and all theres not enough chain for the gear to slide onto cam. It came off fine though. Any suggestions?
I followed the service manual instructions to put oil on bolt threads for a linkage bolt and when tightened it to torque spec the dang thing stripped the threads off.
@@tysleight It was from the factory - nobody had touched it before. I just put a little oil on the threads and followed the Honda service manual torque specs.
@@311hitwall well that super sucks! Maybe it was built on the Friday before a 3 day weekend??? Is the 311 stand for the band or The police code of indecent exposure?
I bet your torque wrench’s arnt exactly right, I know my torque wrench’s are cheap and over tighten a lot of my bolts. I broke a left side cover bolt and it wasn’t even at the required torque yet.
@@blakejansen642 Could be but I used the same wrench after I got a new bolt - without the oil of course. Maybe the oil makes it easier to stretch the bolt and if the wrench is off a few pounds it doesn't end well.

These 2 videos were so helpful, my top end is brand new now and saved me soooo much money compared to taking it to the shop. Thank you guys!

If you can replace this, then you can apply information to v8. These crf, yzf KTM literally small formula one single engines.
Very informative. Thanks
Actually ridiculous how much more complicated a 4 stroke is compared to a 2 stroke.

It’s honestly not that hard to do top ends on 4 strokes.
The videos being so great helps too
Exactly
ShorelineFilms it’s really just the bottom ends that are a pain
It’s not at all , I’ll tell you it makes your life a ton easier if you just pull the engine an do it on a clean organized work bench !
Hard if your not mechanically inclined or have the tools. Lucky for me I have both :)

If you get the valve seats machined do you need different valves. Or do they add material then take away back to OEM size?
yeah i will buy a 2stroke after i put my 450 back together..
That's EXACTLY what I'm doing lol
How many times has this engine been rebuilt since 2005 and has any work been done on it like machining, etc?

It was no virgin. Had a hot rods rod when disassembled
What's the best break in oil do you recommend for a fresh rebuild
The same oil u always use

Solvent, like contact cleaner breaks down grime and buildup.

Using punch to hold the cylinder. Can’t you just put it on a wood bench? If you have one of thoses valve punch
You can certainly put the engine on a bench.
