The demonising of air-conditioning doesn't take into account that modern systems provide very efficient heating in the winter.
The majority of heat pumps installed globally to provide heating in the winter (example Scandinavia) are 'air con' reversible heat pumps or split systems.

This is easier said than done when your house is over a hundred years old (like 20% of UK housing) and so it was built for insulation in a cooler climate rather than ventilation in a warming one.

Hot climate also requires insulation. If the air temperature is higher outside than inside your house, air and infrared radiation from the outside will more easily heat up the inside of a badly insulated house.
What you want to do is have good insulation and the ability to shade most direct sunlight (especially at the infrared) from entering the house, and then open the windows and ventilate during the night when the air is cooler.

    • @Competitive_Antagonist

      @@TLguitar
Its usually hotter inside even in the summer, with the exception of heatwaves. Solar shading is one option. We really need to start using more reflective insulation and also phase changing insulation as that will not only help cool, but heat the home.

    • @DevAnubis
      @DevAnubis 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

100+ year old UK housing stock was NOT built for insulation in cold climates, they're terribly insulated, terribly draught-proofed and where draughts have been fixed they're often fixed poorly leading to poor ventilation and mould.
Fabric insulation and active balanced ventilation improves both winter AND summer internal temperatures, by reducing the heat which gets into the building in summer and out of the building in winter.
We can and must retrofit our ancient housing stock in the UK, there isn't enough time to build enough to replace it.

Ok, I just have to say this. As someone who was a big time AC person for a long time - think setting it to 65 instead of 72 or higher - I have been absolutely _shocked_ as to how well I've done by changing over to fans. And they use, what, like a tenth the power or something?? Either way I wish someone would have told me about it a long time ago, I'm able to do up 92-95ish before the fans really stop keeping up, but even then a mister bottle goes a long way.

Our HVAC system in the house broke down years ago. Never got around to fixing it and realized something... we don't really need it. It's only over 90 degree F for a month. You start to learn tricks to keeping cool. Like not moving as much, opening windows and turning on fans during the night to draw in cool air and closing it during the day to trap it in. If it get's over 100 degrees F I usually turn on the bathtub and sit in the cool water while I stream something on my iPad.

I thought this would be a video on how we can actually stay cool but it's not relevant to any of us ordinary people. This should be shown to CEO's of large companies, you know the ones actually heating the planet. This should also be on electrical companies to change what sources they use to generate power, not me with my little appliance which compared to industrial buildings do nothing. Finally in the UK atleast in the town i'm in very few people have Aircon, I have to rely on turning on the cold tap and running water over my wrists to cool me down, so even less relevant.
Overall fantastic journalism, teaches me nothing to actually cool me down, is irrelevant, and aimed at the wrong people who can nothing about it, perfect.

A good solution (works, I used to do it in our last mobile but it hasn't been hot enough since we moved to need to do it here, yet) is to open your windows, close the curtains and then spray the curtains to dampen them (or hang wet sheets over the open windows if you have nylon curtains that won't hold water). The water evaporates cooling the air and if it is breezy the damp fabric cools the breeze as it comes through Learned this from friends who are from Nigeria, it was how they kept their house cool (ironically, despite being Nigerian, she is allergic to the heat, loves the Irish weather for 11 months out of the year, hates the one hot month we get) in Nigeria, cheap, and in Ireland where all you need to do is turn on the tap, water is easily available as well.

Wind towers, wind catchers, wind pumps (to draw underground water up to turn into cool vapours), underground aqueducts (qanats), wells, simple fans turned by windmill, white paint on house exterior, solar chimney, adobe brick construction, thick walls, wooden shutters and long eaves instead of glass to cover windows and give shade, earthen floors, putting the ground floor underground to let the surrounding earth take in the heat, white clay tile roofs or thatched roofs, wall plants, and shallow pools are what we need to cool our homes without electric power. Evaporative cooling, convection, and radiative cooling are the keys.

Right? I thought that was the whole point of renewable energy is that we can use it without the environmental impact being so negative.
If it is getting hotter and therefore require AC for more days of the year, that would also in turn mean using less heating more days of the year, so should someone offset.
Introduction of solar panels would effectively mean you could run AC without even drawing power from the grid.

So many simple and cheap ways to cool a house WITHOUT using aircon which will kill your bank balance (ask my landlady, banned after last year's electric bills came in).
Simple one anyone can do. Close your curtains - or hang up sheets if your curtains are nylon and won't hold water - and then spray with water so they are wet but not dripping. Open the windows and the air coming in through the damp fabric cools down the room FOR FREE. Used in HOT countries (hotter than the UK and Ireland at any rate) where most people can't afford luxuries like aircon anyway and it works - have been using this for years after friends from a genuinely hot country - nth Nigeria - showed me how they keep their house cool for the single hot month of the year we get here in Ireland. Been doing it ever since but you can't do it unless your curtains are cotton/polycotton, if they aren't then use cheap sheets (from a charity shop or Penneys/Primark) instead.

I want you to choose my "Wind Leader" to prevent the vicious cycle of global warming caused by air conditioners.
Those who have traveled to Japan must know that it is very hot in Japan, where air conditioning is widespread.
30% of the heat in cities is caused by the outdoor units of air conditioners.
It is an urgent task for humanity to reduce the power consumption of air conditioners as much as possible by using the cool wind in the morning and evening, so I think it is worth investigating.
To add to this video, if you think about it further, it is necessary to reduce the consumption of air conditioners in the early morning and at night when solar power generation does not work in order to reduce CO2 emissions.
It can be installed on the existing balcony, so it can be expanded all at once.
For added safety, it has protection from gusts of wind. (Patented)
There is also a plan to install it on the window, so if you contact the manufacturer concerned, we can make a proposal.

if you want to stay cool you need to pressure your local mp's to take up green policy. im in the caribbian and its getting worse and worse each year, the storms are turning into a weather band....thats really bad. for the whole planet.
its not dropping below 93f here recently during the day, nights are 87f
you need aircon. nothing else is going to keep you healthy. but we need that to be powered by green energy at the very least if not a total new low energy aircon system. look to the middle east and chimney buildings is probably a good place to start, make modern versions that dont use electricity.
its not your fault its the fossil fuels

Were human only born by the creator? Was not there any other life with their right to exist and live? Why did the prophets and divine teachers of human Gods and goddesses not teach them to respect the others, instead of alluring them more for the life in heaven? Why did they not teach them to live better in peace and love with all the other life organs rather than to be reborn? Was this creation of different lives of different species meaningless to the creator than the life after death of human species?
