This worked for us on an Aurora 430. My wife had not used it for quite a while. She took it to the repair shop and the guy said "the computer was kaput". He said there were no spare parts available for this model and it needed to be thrown away. He said he could recycle it for $25. She brought it home. I looked at your video and it powered up after about 15 minutes. Thank you so much for sharing this information.
Wow, thank you! I had used the machine recently, but my some of my grandchildren were visiting, and you never know what happens to anything. I put into the Search Engine, my light flickers on but my Bernina machine does not turn on, and you came up first. I had already taken all the back off and everything I could brush or blow clean, and nothing! After watching your TH-cam, I put it back together, plugged it back in and went to work on my SailRite machine, which is too heavy for pillow covering sewing! And guess what...30 minutes into sewing, the Bernina booted up and turned back up. My son said he could not believe that that worked...so thank you. I just cannot afford to take it to the repair shop. Truly, thank you.
Many thanks for this wonderful tip. It worked like a champ. Took 15 minutes on an Aurora 440. Now it's as good as ever after sitting for a couple years after a move. I'm going to write the fix down on a 3x5 card and attach it to the power cord just in case it ever happens again.
Another thankful viewer!! I was gifted a barely used artista 630 and was so bummed that it wasn't turning on. Found your video and it was on within 5 minutes. Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge!
Thanks so much for your advice on restarting a Bernina 430 after it sat idle for almost four years! I followed your advice, and in about an hour, I had a functioning machine. It had been tuned up just before I shelved it for a new machine, and I needed it as a back up when my other machine went in for servicing. It's working beautifully. Thank you on my behalf and on behalf of the little children who will receive the quilts I'll be able to sew for them. Thank goodness for You Tube!
Thrilled I saw this video and thanks for sharing this information. My local UK repair shop had quoted me £410 ($500) to install a new power board in my Bernina 380. Picked up the machine this afternoon from them plugged it in - 30 minutes later and it's working.
Thank you sooooooo much for sharing this!!! It not only saves me at least $100 and the time and effort to take my Aurora 440 to a repair shop, it also saves me from frustration!
It's been about 3 years since I used my 440QE. It came up in the 15 minutes I fooled around on TH-cam thinking it was unplugged and off. The light was on when I walked over to turn it on! Thank you!
Hi. I'm off to a quilt retreat tomorrow and my one year old 880SE is already packed. I decided to use my 630 today to get a few projects started for the retreat. My poor 630 has been sitting unused for over a year since her younger sister came home with me. Imagine my surprise and disappointment to find my trusty 630 wouldn't turn on. I tried different power sources to no avail. I decided to look up possible solutions on the internet before taking it to my dealer about forty minutes away. Nothing worked until I found this video. I did everything you said about leaving it on and then I set my stopwatch. It took a little over seven minutes but she's on and working fine. Thank you for being so helpful. Yours is the place I'll go for any future concerns. I adore my Bernina dealer but hate the drive and being away from my machines.
Thank you so much. Five minutes later our Bernina 230 is back in operation. We posted locally and just heard from another friend that hers is now working as well.
THANK YOU! Inherited this machine from my aunt who passed away over 5 years ago. Thankful not to have to take it to the shop right away. Wanted to check it out before I got it serviced. Appreciate your kind help. :)
It was a 12 minute wait for my circa 1993 Bernina Inspiration 1530 to awaken after being stored for seven years. Thank you so much for sharing this most simple remedy.
My sewing machine has been sitting in my closet for over a year after I had a baby and I thought it was broken when it would not turn on right away- can’t believe how easy this was- thank you so much for the trick- you saved me a lot of hassle!
I did this on my Brother machine that hasn’t worked in 3 years. I figured I’d try your trick before throwing it away and it turned back on. Thank you so much!!
I found an activa 220 someone had thrown out. I plugged it in and nothing. Found this video and about 45 minutes later I got a great machine at an awesome price! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this!! I was just gifted a 440 that’s practically brand new (only 40 hours total, 1 hour of work!!!). I was very nervous when I plugged it in and nothing happened. After an hour I was on the phone with the service department where it was purchased and it fired up. It took 62 minutes.
Christopher was able to correctly diagnose the problem with our B740 (failing CPU board) from just a brief description. Very impressive, and clearly based on vast experience and skills. I'd warmly recommend Christofer for any repairs or service on Bernina machines, I'm sure you'd be in safe hands.
Thank you so much! I was gifted a Bernina 230 and am grateful but have no idea how to use it and thought at least I could try to see if I could do a straight stitch so I could use it while researching how to do more, but when I plugged it up it didn't come on and I was afraid that in all the moving around the plug maybe got broken or something. I was so disappointed until I watched your video and you are my hero lol. I did exactly what you said and, for sure, it finally woke up lol. Thank you, again!
Thanks for this! You've saved us a lot of hassle - only took 10 mins for ours to power up. Crazy design fault. But no big deal now we know! Thanks again.
Okay, you guys are awesome! I don't sew or quilt daily like I used to, and my machine wouldn't power on today after sitting for about a year. Thanks for putting this out there-you saved me a trip to the Bernina dealer for a repair that I apparently don't need! So is this "working as intended"? You mention a repair, so I'm a bit confused about whether my machine is just meant to behave this way, or whether a repair would be the best option. Thanks again for filming this!
This video saved me. I had not used my machine for two years since it is my travel machine. Took it to a workshop and it would not turn on. I was sure it was some big expensive problem and was going to take it in and feared I would need a new machine. I wish the manual indicated this in the trouble shooting section
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Was having a bad day already but I had packed all this stuff for camping to make masks and other things. Decided to take my activa 240 which had been in closet for 3 years at least because I only used it for classes. I have two reg size machines. No Power! First thing I did was go buy a new cord. Nothing! Still no power. Ran across your video. 20 minutes later we are in business. Bless you!
PHEW! Major save! Thank you for the explanation too. I haven't used it for several months. Since the tune up! Great information. I'm good to go. The cost of tune up has risen to the point I can't afford just now. Thanks again.
Dave, Thanks! You described my problem exactly and the solution worked. Really appreciate the you-tube. It saved me a trip to the Bernina repair shop and my project is underway.
For those who like to tinker, I found that replacing the smaller electrolytic capacitors in the power supply seems to fix this issue. Bernina used cheap capacitors for the power supply. I'm too lazy to reverse engineer the specific bad capacitor and/or specific issue.
Thank you so much for this invaluable video. I am up and sewing after about 40 minutes too. The Bernina Activa240,machine was gifted to me and has been in a storage facility for more than 12 years. I though it was going to need to be seen by an technician.
Thanks for this tip! I was just gifted an activa 230 and was thinking I got a bad machine when I tried turning it on and off multiple times. Now I will let it sit and see how long it takes as I know this machine has remained unused for years. I’ll let you know how long it takes for it to come on!
Thank you so much! My wife's 440 QE wouldn't turn on after at least four years of non-use. She was at a quilting retreat, and her 580 was acting up. I almost had to haul her huge and heavy 790 up there for her, but I watched your video and it saved me a several hours of travel and a lot of back pain from carrying it up and down the stairs! It did take about an hour, but the machine finally turned itself on🙂. Why does this info not appear in the manual's troubleshooting guide?
Is this due to a bad capacitor on the power board? Or is there a memory battery that looses charge, and needs to be charged back up? I have seen this with nv ram and cmos batteries on computer mother boards. If computer is not used for quite sometime the battery on the mother board can drain.
Thank you for your video and tip. My wife has a Berina 430 and hasn't used it since the pandemic. It took awhile maybe an hour+. Didn't watch the machine so don't know how long it took.❤
Exactly! I received my machine as a donation to my sewing program and thought I had gotten a bad machine. Bernina should definitely include this tip in the manual.
I haven't used my 430 Aurora for 2 years. It turned on but the lights didn't. I left it on like you said and the light came on after about 45 minutes and stayed on while I sewed a bit and then it went off again,. It still sews but no light. I don't know how to access the settings to turn the light on. I did hold the 16, 17,18 buttons down while I switch it on and the light flickered but didn't come on.
Thanks for sharing. I have a Bernina 125 S. When I start the machine it works fine, but after a short while it just turns off while the screen light and the sewing light are still on. When I start the machine and don't without using it after about 3 minutes it turns off. When I start the machine and use it after about 7-10 minutes it turns off. In both cases both screen light and the sewinglight are on. This machine has a switch mode power sulpy.
Will this advice work for Bernina 1130? My sewing machine has been in storage for more than 10 years and now it won't turn on. It was working good the last time I used it. Thank you for any help or tip.
640a has been plugged in for about 4 days. The bobbin winder works and I can hear beeps when I touch the computer screen, but I still have nothing visible on the screen. Any ideas? Thank you.
I use my 440 all the time. I just cleaned and oiled it. Today out of the blue it's not running. It's beep and the small monitor on it is blank. Can you tell me if my machine just died? It's old. It's the quilters edition 440. Thanks. Karen
Hi. Have a Bernina 830 2015. Haven’t used it for about a year and now seems to be losing memory not holding time or stitches. Is there a battery that may need replacing?
@@ericablythe1 have put it aside for a while Erica, have taken the back off and looked for any loose connections plus any burns on the circuit board, will get back to it soon, it is something fairly simple it’s just a matter of diagnosis, for now make sure everything is connected, it’s probably the power outlet of the machine, will keep you informed.
Hello, any clue on where I can find a replacement foot pedal for a Bernina 900, it's a round air pressure type pedal that I haven't seen on any other machine. When I press the foot pedal sometimes it doesn't work. Or sometimes it jumps into high speed. This machine is from 1979. I've been told the real porblem could be a circuit board, not the pedal.
Auriam Delien the circuit board that should be in the foot pedal is actually in the machine. It's the circuit board that is most likely the problem and that will have to be repaired.
My activa 220 has this problem. It went back and forth to the repair shop several times, but they could not diagnose it. On the last trip the carry handle broke. If you still do this repair I would love to have it fixed. Where are you located?
I want to try this now on my Bernina 150, I haven't used it in years. But when I first turned it on, it flickered, then went dead, does that mean it is probably something else, like the power supply or circuit board? I saw those 2 items addressed below and elsewhere for the Bernina 150 not turning on. Can I possibly damage it more by turning it on and leaving it on?
Heidi Knowlton Raja Mukherjee Your power supply is most likely bad and needs to be replaced. I would be shocked if leaving it turned on solved your issue. You're welcome to try it and it won't damage your machine anymore than it already has.
mizzmolly it could be a number of things. The sure thing is to replace the power supply. You will have to take it to your dealer where they can trouble shoot it further. There might be some solder points that have gone bad and need to be resoldered (pretty cheap fix).
I'm hoping this works for me. I have the exact same machine. the 630. I had a power outage on the 4th and after that it wouldn't turn on. - If this doesn't work, any idea on what else it might be?
Hi Dave I have a Bernina 880 that I just purchased. I have been using it daily for the past week. This morning it would not turn on. I have tried various outlets that I know work. Can you help?
Linda Mischiara you can try a different power cord. If that doesn’t fix it you’ll have to take it to your dealer. It’s most likely either a bad fuse or a bad circuit board
What's this with Bernina circuit boards? I have an 830LE with a defective circuit board which will cost me a fortune to have replace. I'm the fourth one among a quilting group to have the same problem. Now another one here!
Hello Bernina Boys. Would this work for 1630 Inspiration Plus? I powered it up about a year ago and it worked fine. Just tried again and nothing. Any help you could provide is appreciated.
Becky Burke this method is not going to work for a 1630. Most likely it will need a new fuse or a power supply. You’ll have to bring it in to your dealer for that.
I have a B560 and your advice worked perfectly after 36 minutes, it was used without any problem. but the next day we try to turn it on and nothing happens, what do you think?
First of all i would consult your manual and re-set all the settings. Usually the light does not turn off, most of the time the light tube has been banged and has been broken. Hope this helps!
Probably not. Those are known to have different problems. Unfortunately parts for that machine are hard to come by. It may be a very expensive repair :(
Bernina artista 200 without the upgrade. I was in the service screen trying to by-pass the bobbin sensor. Well I decided to have a look at what version I have and was looking at page 1 and then 2 and then tried to escaspe but it was not an active button and pressed back to page one and still no escape active and may have hit OK...but not sure..but because I could not get the ESC active I decided to turn off...now it will not turn back on and screen is blank...HELP...Have I ruined my machine???
Rose Reyna retail is around $150 + labor. Depends on your dealer what they decide to charge. If you are feeling brave and want to replace it yourself, call Dave's Bernina in Provo and we can walk you through the process.
Hi Dave. First off, thanks very much for taking the time to make and post this video. My wife's 640 started exhibiting similar behaviour a few months ago. The only difference is that about 15-20 seconds after she turns the power switch on you can hear the servo's homing but nothing else comes on. I'm suspecting the power supply or circuit board/board connections. I figured if it was the main switch the servos wouldn't move. If she turns the switch on and off a few times it seems to help. We haven't tried leaving the switch on yet for an hour like you have done Any suggestions to test further? I live in Canada so the paperwork involved in sending you the unit (and getting it back) would be too encumbering. Can I buy parts from you though?
pjwlk It's tough to say exactly what it is. It would be very expensive and time consuming if we were to send you the parts one at a time until we find the right fix. We would be happy to fix your machine if you sent it to us. And In the end it would for sure be cheaper doing it that way

My wife's 630 sat idle for a few months. Dead. 3-1/2 minutes after viewing your vid ... it's alive again ! So many thanks for this video.

I did this on my Brother machine that hasn’t worked in 3 years. I figured I’d try your trick before throwing it away and it turned back on. Thank you so much!!

Does this work for singer machines?
Hi. Have a Bernina 830 2015. Haven’t used it for about a year and now seems to be losing memory not holding time or stitches.
Is there a battery that may need replacing?
Yes. There is a watch battery in the base of the machine under the hand wheel that needs to be replaced.
Dave when I turn a Bernina 750 QE on the sewing light flashes and nothing else, I guess it is a fuse or circuit board problem, thanks Dave.
780 here, same problem… very interested to know if you found a fix?

When I press the foot pedal sometimes it doesn't work. Or sometimes it jumps into high speed. This machine is from 1979. I've been told the real porblem could be a circuit board, not the pedal.
Auriam Delien the circuit board that should be in the foot pedal is actually in the machine. It's the circuit board that is most likely the problem and that will have to be repaired.
This worked for my Brother PE150! Shocked this actually worked!
My activa 220 has this problem. It went back and forth to the repair shop several times, but they could not diagnose it. On the last trip the carry handle broke. If you still do this repair I would love to have it fixed. Where are you located?
Cheryl McGee Dave's Bernina is located in Provo Utah. Give us a call at 801-374-5520
Aurora 440 QE after about 5 years rebooted within 10 minutes. Thanks so much!
Glad I could help!
Thanks. I'll take it to a local repair center tomorrow.
mizzmolly it could be a number of things. The sure thing is to replace the power supply. You will have to take it to your dealer where they can trouble shoot it further. There might be some solder points that have gone bad and need to be resoldered (pretty cheap fix).
Does this trick work for Brother sewing machine ? Thanks
I haven't usef my machine in a long time. Power ok but the hand wheel will not turn. What to do??? Thanks.
I'm hoping this works for me. I have the exact same machine. the 630. I had a power outage on the 4th and after that it wouldn't turn on. - If this doesn't work, any idea on what else it might be?
Where are you located ?
The fault on the power supply, is the cause the capacitors?
Hi Dave I have a Bernina 880 that I just purchased. I have been using it daily for the past week. This morning it would not turn on. I have tried various outlets that I know work. Can you help?
Linda Mischiara you can try a different power cord. If that doesn’t fix it you’ll have to take it to your dealer. It’s most likely either a bad fuse or a bad circuit board
Thanks. Tried a different power cord with same results. Taking it to my dealer tonight.
Thank you so much. I'll stop sitting here staring at it, waiting for it to turn on ;)
Will this work on an Artista 165 as well? Seems like it would.
Eric Gorski most likely not. It's a different power supply. It will probably need to be repaired or replaced by your dealer
Bernina Boys ok thank you! Will take it in
I have a B560 and your advice worked perfectly after 36 minutes, it was used without any problem. but the next day we try to turn it on and nothing happens, what do you think?
Would this work for a Bernina 750QE it hasn’t been used for maybe a year...
Probably not. They have a different computer board on that machine. Take it in to your dealer and they can help you solve the problem.
Bernina Boys thank you! Guess a lesson learn NOT to electronics from the marketplace ;(
Will this work on a 780?
Possibly but not normally.
High Dave I have a Bernina Artista 200. The light went off. How do I turn it back on?
First of all i would consult your manual and re-set all the settings. Usually the light does not turn off, most of the time the light tube has been banged and has been broken. Hope this helps!
Hi , is just same thing on bernina 1230 ?
What about turn off all and any information on display after 10 min turn on? Why it is happened? What to do with Bernina Aurora 440?
Please reply to this: I have a Bernina 135S and it sews, then just stops, please advise!!
If my machine won't power on after 2 hours and all of a sudden smells hot/burnt, could it be the power supply?
J Kr yes. The power supply is why it wouldn't turn on in the first place. Whether it is burnt out or not it needs to be replaced.
Bernina Boys . Ok, thank you so much!!!
what about a Bernina 710 that has been off for 10 years?
Would this work with a Viking Husqvarna 120?
Probably not. Those are known to have different problems. Unfortunately parts for that machine are hard to come by. It may be a very expensive repair :(
Would you start with changing the on switch?
Melissa Bekkum that probably won’t fix it. Contact your Viking dealer and see what they recommend.
Thank you so much, you saved the day. Your fix worked perfectly.
MP D this is very strange. I recommend taking it to your dealer. It may need a firmware update which should be pretty inexpensive.
How much does a circuit board cost to replace it for Bernina QE 440?
And In the end it would for sure be cheaper doing it that way
You Saved me 😃 thx
from Switzerland
Does anyone know if this works on a B 780 as well? Hoping that this is my problem. 😢
Thanks for this but it didn't work. The screen came on for a brief second and then disappeared. What's the next step? I guess a service?
On what machine?
@@berninaboys100 it’s a 630 Artista. I think my steps will be to bring it to a dealership for assessment. I wanted this to work! Thanks
Hello, I have a Bernina 1080 machine. It acts as if its not getting any power to it. is this a common problem and or can it be easily fixed. thank you
Any other ideas. Did not work for me
