Oh my word! I have NEVER done this and have made several quilts and other things in the past twenty years!!! It is sooooo quiet now! And my stitch tension problems are resolved. I am shaking my head at myself.
Great video!! I just bought my machine a month ago, and brought it with me to the UK. I've been sewing like crazy lately, and today it started squeaking...I followed along with your video and now my machine is perfect again! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for this demo. It helped me get the hook back in place in my machine. Tipping the machine back is a good idea because you can then see where the hook needs to be. -Vera in Pennsylvania
Great advice - have been thinking I needed to do this - now it sews beautifully and quietly! My old machine didn't need oiling so it is something I have forgotten to do!
Just had a part on my Bernina replaced. Now that it is all steel (had a carbon piece on it) I have to oil it. Lady at the shop was very helpful, but I walked out still unclear how to oil it. This was perfect!
Hi - You are correct, your machine is different from the standard Bernina bobbin case. We do need to do a video on this type of hook system. Thanks! ~Sara~
Awesome, quick, to-the-point video on how to clean/oil your Bernina sewing machine. I’m sewing hundreds of face masks, and my machine was “acting up” and sounded “funny” - this has solved the issue (forgot I was supposed to do this as it’s been years since I did this much sewing!).
Thanks so much for this video! I have an Artista 170 and started hearing a noise. I took your advice and now it runs smooth and quiet! Great information!!
thank you, my sis and i were able to oil our machine as soon as it began squeaking. we did not know that it was supposed to be regularly oiled! the last time i had my machine oiled was over 4 years ago!
@SaunWhee Hi - thanks for the suggestion. Which Bernina model do you own? You should just contact your local dealer for the bulb anyway. We install light bulbs for free!
Thank you so much for this video! I have a secondhand Bernina Activa 145 that I'm learning to sew on, so any videos on these machines would be welcome, especially the automatic buttonhole and button features.
@HeirloomCreations I bought some oil and even though it's still a little noisy, it sounds much much better. I now oil it regularly according to the manuel
@HeirloomCreations Thanks so much for Sharing! I oiled mine today, it sounds Great! :-) I also had to open & oil around my Presser Foot too, it was hesitating. Now it's super smooth.
A hint; something I thought of myself while oiling the Bernina 530 Record, which is an oldie but a goodie. Each moving part needs only a very small amount of oil and even the cans supplied by the makers often deliver too much. Ask the vet for a medium bore injection needle with the sharp point cut off. Attach a short length of plastic tubing to the other end of this. Slip the remaining end of the tube onto the nozzle of a small plastic bottle with sewing machine oil in it. Cheers, Peter.
Hi! I really hope someone can answer this - do you need to oil the top part? If so, how? I feel that the top tread is very tense, even if it's on 0-1 on the tensions setting. I thought that's because I haven't oiled the top. But then I can't find any information on how to do that. Even the manual suggest that you only oil the bottom, where the bobbin is.
hi I have a bernina 180e and it looks like this, but I don't see a latch to push to release the race cover thing.. is it the same as yours? or can you do a video on a bernina 180 and show how it works.. thank you
Absolutely true! The 3 in 1 oil should be boycotted, even though it has a cynical and misleading image of a sewing machine on its label. The stuff contains linseed oil which accumulates on the machinery in a claggy yellow/brown mess, slowly becoming thicker and stickier, eventually slowing the machine down as dust and lint adhere to it. It could also become a guarantee issue if push ever came to shove in a dispute over the cause of part failure. Cheers, Peter, NZ.
PLEASE-- never run your machine with the presser foot down on the feed dogs without fabric to protect the bottom of the foot. It will chew up the bottom of the foot and ruin it.
@gerardhelps See if the bobbin winder is on. Otherwise, take it to a local sewing machine store. If you have a Bernina store would be better. People pay top dollar for that model if it is working. :)
+Aguzzi Srz Hi, I would contact your local Bernina store and have them look into the problem. We also have filmed videos on a very similar model for you to learn how to use your Bernina 125. Click here for the free tutorials: www.sewingmastery.com/videos/bernina-215-tutorial/ ~Sara~
Ruff Rollin' Hi, the actual sewing hours are on the tech side of the machine. You will need your local Bernina dealer to tell you the sewing hours. ~Sara~
Anyone try to change the bulb in a 1090? I removed my burnt out bulb bu can't seem to put a new one in. Even using a mirror to try to make sure I'm in the right place. I think sometimes I don't have it straight up and down enough, and also I don't know how far to turn it once I feel it click in place ready to turn. Any suggestions?
I have changed the bulbs in my 1090 and 1090s. I found I didn't need a mirror - it was easier by feel - pull out the plastic covering the lights - not taking it off, but sliding it out. Then put the new bulb in the end of the bulb remover and move the holder with the bulb on it around until it feels like it is in place and move it up into place - firmly but not to hard. Turn the holder in your hand and you should feel the bulb click/move into place.
I didn't have any oil to oil mine, but I at least dusted it out and figured out how to get the thing that the bobbin goes in back in the machine. The manual isn't very helpful. I'll get some oil tomorrow maybe
@mbk1021 Thank you for your comments. We are making a long list of our Bernina customer requests for videos. I will add your request to our list. If you have more, please leave a comment here. :) Thanks, Sara Snuggerud
I love my Bernina machine but my local Bernina Dealer Service is a ripoff. She charges a fortune for a cleaning and to oil the machine and the work is done by her unskilled/clueless daughter. THIS is a great video... but it's very sad the Bernina site doesn't sell high quality sewing machine oil and an have an official instructional video on how to do it yourself. how hard can it be if this woman's unskilled daughter is doing it.
thank you, my sis and i were able to oil our machine as soon as it began squeaking. we did not know that it was supposed to be regularly oiled! the last time i had my machine oiled was over 4 years ago!
Oops....I've been sewing 25years and nobody ever told me this! Thank you so much for a very clear tutorial. I'm off to buy some oil!
I was frightened that oiling meant taking the entire machine apart - I had no idea it was so easy! Thank you so much!
Oh my word! I have NEVER done this and have made several quilts and other things in the past twenty years!!! It is sooooo quiet now! And my stitch tension problems are resolved. I am shaking my head at myself.
Your Bernina sewing machine thanks you too!

Thank you for making this video. I was having trouble remembering how to oil my Bernina machine.

thank you darling, i had no idea it needed to be oiled so often! I go through a lot of bobbins, lol
thanks for sharing your experience. I had my oil light come on while quilting. I could not find clear instruction in my book. this really helped.
What is the best oil to use for the Bernina sewing machines?
@SaunWhee Hi - thanks for the suggestion. Which Bernina model do you own? You should just contact your local dealer for the bulb anyway. We install light bulbs for free!
Thank you. Very helpful video. Used it this afternoon and cleared away a lint nest, oiled my machine ánd put it back together again.
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A DEMO on oiling the 570
Kia ora. I have a Bernina 700, it's really noisy, slow, and desperately needs a clean and oil. Thanks for the video!
@skytop1111 Please only use sewing machine oil in a sewing machine. This oil can be found at any local sewing machine store.
Thank you so much for this video! I have a secondhand Bernina Activa 145 that I'm learning to sew on, so any videos on these machines would be welcome, especially the automatic buttonhole and button features.
Thank You from Me in Sweden, hopefully Will my Old sewingmaskine work normally again 🌹
Hi - You will need a light sewing machine oil available at sewing machine stores or fabric stores such as JoAnn's or Hancock fabrics. Thanks! ~Sara~
@HeirloomCreations I bought some oil and even though it's still a little noisy, it sounds much much better. I now oil it regularly according to the manuel

Thank you for the first work I must do with the machine from my mother how is dead but I take her hobby over.

@gerardhelps See if the bobbin winder is on. Otherwise, take it to a local sewing machine store. If you have a Bernina store would be better. People pay top dollar for that model if it is working. :)

You need to go on Facebook and join the Bernina Lovers group - and you will learn so much.
