I tried this yesterday after watching this video and then just so happen to get frustrated with a piece. It worked! Its way easier than messing with solder pieces and trying to get them to stay put. Thank you! I was ready to scrap the piece.
You are very generous to share your years of experience! I really enjoy your videos. I feel like I’m just following you around your workshop, learning everything I can!
thank you so much for your super helpful video John! I would normally go to my dad for questions about silver/metalsmithing but he sadly passed away in 2019. Since his passing I have to turn to google and youtube for my questions and your video really reminded me of the good kind of instruction I would get from him. Your bench even reminds me of his a little. Miss that bench! I also need to pick up a pair of those sheers they look a treat to use. Thanks so much! xxx
Dear John, I am new at soldering, and I have seen many tutorials on you tube. I have bought three kinds of solder, because it seems different people have different opinions about what is the right things to use. So I was looking for someone to tell me about the use of solder wire vs. paste and chips. I was so glad to find you! I personally like the wire the best, but I wanted someone with experience to confirm my choice! Thank you for making it so clear.
Hey sir! I am from Raton NM and a Pueblo/ Navajo Native American 🇺🇸 even some Spanish! 😆…I am so enjoying your tutorials…I was a jump ring jewelry maker and have turned my eye on silver smithing….since it is in my blood and I love silver and turquoise. My wife and I are headed west once Covid stops and look for a small place to live in Colorado or Nth NM. I must come by and see ur store. I checked the web-site and must visit. Take care and stay well.
Thanks for a wonderful video. Very informative. Rio Grande is a fantastic company for jeweler's tools and supplies. I'm so fortunate to deal with them.
You are such an awesome instructor! You always give such clear directions and explain why you do the things the way you do. Thank you for taking time to share your expertise with all of us!
I really appreciate when people take time to teach me cool things, thank you john. Now I'm working on free form Aussi opal, setting my pieces is the next thing.
I am learning a great deal from your videos. I have not worked with metal since 1974! But watching you it is coming back. I am setting up an area to work and getting tools together. If however you are still making videos i would love for you to talk about copper brass and bronze and do you treat any of those metals differently than silver. When i was at School for American Craftsmen my best friend was up in METAL and she did marriage of metal inlay. Do you ever do that. I look forward to watching all of your lectures/ demonstrations. Deb
Hey John, can you make a video about adding details to a piece? Specifically making silver granules, feathers, and stamped elements? Thank you so much, I'm excited to start smithing as soon as my equipment comes in!
Thanks John! I'm just starting out. Your jewelers bench is a dream. I will watch all your videos! Thanks also on the tips on products to purchase. Those sheers are on my list now. Jk
Thank you for the nice video. Do you have anything about using a soldering iron instead of a torch? I'm only looking to do small solder jobs like a small spot on wirework or on jumprings.
Very good demo!👍 I watched this a while back and it really helped. Also, I was glad to see you use shears to trim the back. I used old scissors because I'm not proficient with my jewelry saw yet. Is there a specific jeweler's name for the technique of feeding the wire solder as you go? I'm sure it comes with experience but it's still quite impressive because my hands aren't steady enough to do it especially working standing up at my kitchen stove because I don't have a proper work space. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Love your work and your teaching style I turned 69 today ,any way I am curious about your torch , is it propane and if so who sells them. Hesitant about acetylene in the garage but dont worry much about bar-b-que bottles.
Hi there! Just discovered these videos and I love them!! Could you do a video where you show how to make feathers and then solder them onto a ring or pendant? Thanks!!
Questions you seem to be a man of knowledge No I am not useing silver but copper wire and I was trying to use something that will merge the colors of copper together yes solder I got it from adornville it is a 93% copper base hard wire solder and a bit of a learning curve and its difficult to use so my questions are is it the same practice as you described as the same for copper to heat the wire and the peaces to be soldered second then drop the solder to join Your knowledge on this issue is greatly appreciated Thank you in advance
