  • Gone are the days of traditional models of courtship, romance and commitment. Instead, say hello to a new model of dating based on free choice, self fulfillment and a basic anything-goes approach-A model which doesn’t seem to be working for anybody. But how do we move an entire culture that is saturated with this casualness around sex and relationships towards a culture of emotional visibility and deep connection? How will this impact our legacy? Erin Miller is a Professional Coach and Mission-Driven Entrepreneur committed to being an unstoppable force for good. Erin is dedicated to helping modern romantics around the globe build an authentic life & business they truly love. Erin graduated from IPEC: Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching with additional certification as an Energy Leadership Index Master Practitioner (ELI-MP). Erin Miller is a revolutionary Professional Coach and Entrepreneur with a very unique perspective on love and dating. I don't think I've ever "ghosted" anyone in my life, that is the most pathetic quality human beings have displayed to date. We've cultivated a culture of instant gratification for zero effort, we can severe connections that are hard to form these days by the click of a button and then complain about lack of intimacy. I never thought it possible for people to experience loneliness in an over populated world but here we are, except it is too late. The deterioration is exponential, somewhat akin to an avalanche, good luck stopping that.

@@lyndsaybrown8471 Yep. Actually if you think about it, divorce isn't a bad thing: when it was legalized, female suicide dropped, and it simply means that people who don't want to be together stop being together.
Falling out of love is sad though, but that ain't knew. Now we just got options.

@@AnimalsEtc Oh yeah but my point here is that divorce is just the legal consequence of falling out of love/no longer wanting to be together. I'm pretty sure if you could isolate happy and unhappy marriages, children from unhappy marriages would also have higher risk of suicide, incarceration, and substance abuse.
Also with those numbers very often unprecise. Are they isolated from other factors? And correlation doesn't equal causation as well. Maybe people who have X characteristic (like, idk, not having emotional intelligence) are more likely to get divorces and also sadder children, and that would be the true case, and not divorce being the case of sadder children.

I despise the shallowness of hookup culture >_< I find it void and draining by just imagining how it would be like. I'm 26. At the same time, I don't think love and connection comes from dreamy romantic courtship and dates. The core of finding a worthwhile person is in, as she well said, authenticity and vulnerability, which doesn't alway happen in "romantic" dates. Romanticism may as well be another facade in hookup culture.
Love develops with getting to know the other through the time you continually spend with each other no matter what you do. So, why should meeting someone online be looked down on if what matters is how these people further developed their relationship? And why can't ordinary activities, like talking or watching a movie, become extraordinary in the light of love?

You’re right. Being authentic can happen in a tinder date, but perhaps the jump to do that, from profile to real life date is much bigger than the jump from acquaintance (work, club or neighbour, etc) to date, since you know more about the person. Also, in my experience (40+ years married) knowing a person in an environment where you meet his friends and family while getting to know him better helps you get a better picture of what he’s like.

The problem with technology is that a tablet allows a search for everything but a library will contain books that one individual will never think of to search on the net. The stacks have millions of words and worlds that you can peruse. Inside the tablet you have to search to find things. Its a paradox. The world is at your fingertips but your experience limits what you know. In the library you will be stretched mentally.

I’ve never ghosted a woman, nor have I had any ulterior motive-all I’ve ever wanted was a meaningful “Longterm Relationship.” Hookup culture has destroyed this. But I’m never letting go of my hope and faith that one day I’ll find the right girl, one day have kids. I’m not God, but I know my intentions and objectives are honest and loving. If this makes me less of a man then oh f****ng well.

technically it depends but i understand that in most contexts, yes. Absolutely. It's oversimplified, but it's basically correct imo. Ignoring someone (in an unmerited way) can be very similar to dishonesty. Not listening. Not saying the truth. It's all important to honest people.

Because the government make too much money from alimony and child support so there is no incentive to protect marriage as an institution. There's no real enforcement strategies holding monogamy together, thus we have to rely on more disagreeable strategies - and they are disagreeable - like hook-up culture, gamifying dating, neo-masculinity, red-pill, MGTOW. Monogamy is a cooperative strategy (game theoretically speaking), but every cooperative strategy yields incentive for exploitation (the prisoner's dilemma), so every cooperative strategy requires an enforcement strategy, but marriage, which was that enforcement strategy, is broken.

We call this seeking pleasures of the flesh. The ability to base life on extrinsic motivations, the inability to be able to be internal. Many mental clinicians love helping people who experience difficulties managing their emotions and behaviours. If one cannot bond with another, then they shall seek to resolve their own inner difficulties by accepting themselves and accepting people for who they are. This is an individual situation, and one can let go of this hurt and pain of not feeling connected.

It's hard to choose a favourite among so many great tracks, but "The Greatest Love of All" is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late to better ourselves. Since, Erin, it's impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It's an important message. Crucial really. And it's beautifully stated on the album.

Girlfriend No 1 introduced me to my next three girlfriends and girlfriend No 7 helped me out with advice when my wife moved to the UK from another country. I was introduced to my wife's 7 year ex (18 to 25) and we became friends. He and his wife was a guest at our wedding reception in 2003. I have always treated exes with respect and I would help any of them if they came to me now, and my wife is happy with this. We now have two mid teenage sons and we worry that they will not have such a happy time with dating and marriage, but my wife and I are doing our best to help them with advice.

Go overseas. There are still cultures in the world where courting is the norm. I could tell you plenty of war stories but are you going to give up? Put on your big boy pants and get back into the game. I have found my love and it would not have happened if I had not kept pitching. Like most things in life if it comes too easy it is not appreciated in the long run. Too many today are like dogs chasing their own tails, they haven't a clue. Set your course and stick to it and you will find this will be the most attractive thing you can do. Most importantly always give respect no matter what happens. In doing so you will retain respect for yourself and you don't know the path that has led many to where they are today. You can't save the world but you don't have to worsen the pain others may be experiencing either.

We tend to put the onus on men, "oh MLK was a dawg, he had women on the side" but rarely do we ask the question about the other side of the coin "why is this scenario so common? Why do so many women participate and are willing to share a man and look the other way regarding his marriage status?" Lord forgive we raise questions that shine a light on anything unflattering towards women the way that we do in regards to men

Should women be treated more harsher because of what they did? I think they are being treated fairly like men cuz they have a upper hand in some cases and men have upper hand is some cases.

this feels so short sighted. i kept waiting for her to get to the point as to why hookup culture has failed us, but she doesn't even really seem to define what hookup culture is, aside from alluding to what is in my mind greater autonomy in romantic relationships with fewer social expectations for formality or commitment. i don't think the alternative of decades past, an intense pressure to formalize relationships and marry within a short span of time, did people much better in terms of emotional health, vulnerability, or connection. that's not to say i like how disconnected we are but to blame that on a loosening of social expectations rather than, idk, how increasingly overworked and atomized people are in a capitalist society, feels pretty lazy.

Anyway, "hookup culture" is not new, dating apps aren't a problem, they are just a tool we use and if that "intimacy problem" was not there before, they can't create it.
    - I have had more intimacy and have learned more things from dating apps and social media than anywhere else.
    - They also let you filter out people you wouldn't want to waste your time with much faster. It allows you to find so many more like-minded people than just the ones you meet in your closed community.
    - There are a lot crueller things you can do to a person besides ignoring them.
    - People in the past (women especially) were absolutely not happier overall
