How The Greatest LOTR Games Of All Time Were Made

  • In the early 2000s, EA created a series of Lord of the Rings video games based on Peter Jackson's film trilogy. Among them were two of the best movie tie-in games ever made, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. This is the story of how they were created... and the journey that led to the cancellation of one of the most promising open-world RPGs of all time.

    These games are just…perfect extensions of the movies. Every time I watch the trilogy, I bust out the Xbox. The music, the voice acting, the mix of movie and game models; it all works.
    I still hold out hope for an open world LOTRs game. Some day.
    Thank you for sharing this story!

    What a great video, man. Big props to Chris and Steve for taking the time to be interviewed.
    Great presentation and pacing of the video itself, too.

    I remember vividly playing these games over and over again and slowly learning how to play them (I was very young when I first played them). They are some of my best gaming memories from my childhood. Fun fact: if you play through the game Third Age, a lot of the assets are just straight up lifted from the RotK game. TT and RotK are definetly THE BEST movie tie-in games that ever were. And god being reminded of the King Arthur movie tie-in game just unlocked a whole host of memories. How many times I failed keeping the dude alive who was trying to break down the sealed off door. This video was amazing. Thank you for it and thank you for actually reaching out to the devs and interviewing them.

      Thank YOU for watching it! I had such an amazing experience talking with the devs. It’s something I’ll always try to do in my videos-offer a perspective from the people who made the games!

    I do have fond memories related to the movies, and even if I wasn't able to play the games I undestand how profund the media can impact us, with a indeept approch to the story and making you able to kinda experience it yourself! Amazing video! can't wait for more!

    Kyle! This video was a nostalgia road trip! I played both of these games so many times as a kid. My Gamecube struggled with those graphics but I remember loving the game to film transitions so much. Like I lived for those moments. Thanks for telling this story. This was great!

    Holy crap dude, the quality of this vidoc is incredible! Also I never knew they get the on screen actors to do the voice acting for the two towers game, that's pretty neat!

    Did the developers comment at all about how Peter Jackson felt about the movie games? I don't know if this is true, but I read somewhere that Jackson was unhappy with how EA handled "Two Towers" and "Return of the King". I found that surprising because they were some of the better licensed games.

    • @KyleOfTheBeard
      @KyleOfTheBeard 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They did! I didn’t want to focus too much on it in the video but they said that Jackson was less than thrilled that the games were contractually able to come out six weeks prior to the film releases. Essentially the games were able to ruin major set pieces and show actual footage well before the films released.
      I also don’t think he participated in the behind the scenes interviews-in the two towers, they basically reuse footage from the film interviews. Can’t remember if he does any in the Return of the King game. I think mainly it was Barrie Osborne who handles them.
      And I know that VO recording for the games interfered with filming for the movies. I was told that the day before Billy Boyd recorded his song for Return of the King, they basically blew his voice out doing battle cries and grunts for the game. Jackson definitely wasn’t happy with that.

    • @JacobDragyn
      @JacobDragyn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @TheBeard That all makes sense. At the time I remember getting the impression that Jackson liked the games, but I could have been misconstruing that from other behind-the-scenes videos.
      I had read the book by the time "Two Towers" came out. The games are very much cliff-notes versions of the films, so I wouldn't say they actually hurt the films for me, but I can see why Jackson would be unhappy at anything showing large parts of his films before they released. I wonder if the games inclusion of lines and events which were cut from the theatrical versions of the films, like Saruman and the Mouth of Sauron, might have been awkward for him.
      Now I'm trying to think if Billy Boyd's voice sounds different than usual in ROTK. He does seem to sing more quietly than he did on set, but I assume that's just because it worked better in the studio.

    It's always sad when an ambitious project never manages to reach its full potential, or even gets canceled because the people in charge don't care enough about things their creators are so passionate about. I'd say this rings true in this day and age with AAA games costing so much and some of them ending out to be pretty mediocre because they have to appeal to the widest audience possible, or with entities like Warner Bros shelving movies and counting them as tax write-offs.
    Great job introducing me to The White Council, Kyle! I had no idea a project like that even existed!

    • @KyleOfTheBeard
      @KyleOfTheBeard 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I think it’s really unfortunate how everything went down for The White Council. Steve told me that if they had started right when the movies came out, they MIGHT have been able to finish it before the license ran out. But instead… we got an executive making fun of LOTR olive oil. And that was that.
      But thank you so much for watching and commenting! Really appreciate it 😊
