Demi Lovato: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

  • The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
    Lyndsey McKenna | April 14, 2021
A few years ago, some of us on the NPR Music team stumbled upon a copy of Demi Lovato's 2013 book, Staying Strong: 365 Days A Year. Reading Lovato's heartfelt daily reflections became a workday habit; her transparency and vulnerability made us ardent admirers who wanted nothing but the very best for Demi.
We made it our mission to get Demi to the Tiny Desk, and though the pandemic had other plans, Lovato's Tiny Desk (home) concert was worth the wait. Recorded on a sunny spring day in her Los Angeles backyard, Lovato begins with a moving rendition of "Tell Me You Love Me" from her 2017 record of the same name, accompanied by subtle, sparse keys. She continues her set with the title tracks from her recently-released studio album, Dancing With The Devil...The Art Of Starting Over. On both tracks, Lovato's voice feels stabilizing and grounding; there's a sense of clarity and purpose in its power.
When interviewed by NPR's Ailsa Chang back in 2017, Demi Lovato said, "I think I've lived a lot of life." Through both her struggles and successes, Lovato's shown all sides of herself - the confident and unapologetic star, but also the complexities of recovery - inviting us on her journey in a deeply personal way. Her intimate (home) concert feels like a natural extension of that sincerity.

Maybe I’m misremembering, but I feel like I’m the recorded versions of the two albums, this one is more relaxed vocal wise and she’s more focused on her message than showing off her talent. I’m always blown away by Demi even after all these years. Their newest album is truly a masterpiece. Their music is significantly more honest and real to them and it shows. No matter what anybody says, I know deep down that it’s truly a blessing that Demi has a platform. Nobody has dedicated more time and energy to advocate for mental health, addiction, eating disorders, and LGBTQ+ rights. They always speak up and use their platform for good. Outspoken, honest, and vulnerable people are always the targets of hate and criticism, and yet Demi bounces back every time and still has it in their heart to use their talent and celebrity for good.

I never comment on artists videos, or any videos really, unless I'm truly moved by the content. Demi, I've always loved your music, movies, appearances, etc. You've always been an inspiration to me. You're beautiful, talented, and above all down to Earth. This performance was absolutely phenomenal. It is like God gave you a bigger gift that you can move forward with, and we are all here to be blessed with such an angelic human. Sending so much good vibes your way 🙏💕👑

She’s better than ever. All it took was one big wake up call to unleash her 100% potential. Amazing.

The way she can sing live is amazing. Her live here was even better than the studio version. Crazy. Amazing runs and high notes on point.

How the pianist manages to stay so cool during this incredibly emotional and brave performance astonishes me

Well, as a lifelong pianist I can tell you that if he gets incredibly emotional he won't be able to do his very technical job any more than you can get emotionally out of control at whatever you do for a living. I send you good wishes, Ezra.
