A highlight of their debut album Nicely Out of Tune, this is Alan Hull at his most poetic and spiritual. It's not clear but he may have written this while working as a psychiatric nurse in a hospital in his home town of Newcastle. So appropriate for the season, Paul. Thanks to you and Harri.
Happy Christmas, glad you have discovered Lindisfarne. Discovering music is like treasure hunting , every now and then you discover a song that will stop you in your tracks. Glad you enjoyed it.
Great reaction harri. Most lindisfarne songs seem bouncy and upbeat, but now and again they throw something along that is slower. This is Alan Hull, lead singer, at his best crafting a song that pulls no punches, yet has magnificent repetitive rhyming lyrics which deliver his message. I've known this one for about 50 years, it's a shame it isn't better known, but people are still finding it, which has to be a good thing. Thanks Harri, and enjoy your Christmas!
So glad to see you cover this song. One of my all time faves. Alan Hull at his best, writing and playing. Sublime. It don't get much better. Always pleased when this one comes around on my playlist.
This was a real gift, Harri. A new favorite. Pentangle and Clannad are similar bands also worth exploring. His voice reminded a bit of Nick Drake. It makes me think of another beautiful underappreciated song, which was the very first song by Genesis, and called "When the Sour Turns to Sweet". Steely Dan's "Charlie Freak" is another song which urges charity toward the unfortunate. May you never know scarcity. Happy holidays!
Thanks so much for this Harri - I have a 45 of Lady Elenore from childhood but never heard anything else - in Australia not sure they played any of their other songs.
Beautiful song and great reaction, Harri. It reminds me of Sandy Denny's Who Knows Where The Time Goes. If you don't know it, I think you'll LOVE it. Hope you and your family are well.
Elvis Costello called this the greatest song ever written- who can disagree with that. As well as Costello, Sam Fender did a great cover version last year. A tragedy Alan Hull was taken from us far too early in 1995 aged just 50. On Alan's final album released posthumously Statues & Liberties he recorded the stunning 'Cardboard Christmas Boxes' the ultimate song updating the plight of those less fortunate while having a huge dig at the modern over commercialised Christmas. Love your review and shine on Alan you will always be remembered- James Alan Hull 1945-1995
Their commercial success was mostly in Europe,I liked them because I like the whole "British" folk movement back then, an " offshoot" group formed from this one was Jack the Lad, Saw them in a small bar ,in Upstate N.Y.,about 12 people in attendance.( What a crime)..
Wow, brilliant tune this. I’m not really the folky type of guy, but this is really great. Reminds me somewhat of Nick Drake. You should check him out as well Harri. Yeah, I’m a bit behind. Trying to catch up now after five days in hospital. I donated a kidney to our daughter this week.
first time i subscribed to a channel, you listen and then give time for your considered view.....i am a Geordie, saw Lindisfarne at the city i think you would like "can't do right for doing wrong"..our communities have a closeness bred from mining communities
Okay, I see you DO have a Sandy Denny in Fairport Convention! I think Who Knows Where The Time Goes would snuggle down into your soul and not leave for a few days. It's very slow and contemplative, like this one. But slower and more contemplative 😊
I believe you reacted to Rhiannon before, but she is an awesome music historian. All of the members of the Carolina Chocolate Drops are. They find and cover great songs from the past so I request, from the 1920s: No Man's Mama | Carolina Chocolate Drops | Sound Tracks Quick Hits | PBS
Alan Hull was a genius God rest his soul.

"Lady Eleanor" is my favorite tune by them.
Beautiful song!! My fave from them is "Nothing But The Marvelous Is Beautiful".
Great reaction Harri. Beautiful song , great choice Paul Dover.
This song is perfectly written. Spare in its lyrics but the intent says so much. I can’t wait to check out more of their music.
It's perfect.

Great British folk rock band. I saw them open for Fairport Convention. Check out Fairport next.
Beautiful song and great reaction, Harri. It reminds me of Sandy Denny's Who Knows Where The Time Goes. If you don't know it, I think you'll LOVE it.
