    Absolute disaster in the waiting. So being a graduate makes a good police officer, what happened to good old common sense, and wanting to do it for the right reasons.

    • @shanefolan
      @shanefolan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      30 years ago I'd have agreed with you but the thing about the police though nowadays is that it requires a lot of paperwork and writing reports, taking statements,logging information, sending emails,uploading files etc. There are mass amounts of admin and red tape which actually requires one to be book smart/educated as if you struggle with reading/grammar/punctuation [which many people do] etc it might be a struggle.
      It is not just a case of driving around, keeping order, dealing with people, arresting people etc. Common sense and doing it for 'the right reasons' isn't necessarily enough to make it as a good officer in the job anymore in that the 'reasons' people have for joining the force will overlook all the red tape baggage that comes with it because so many people are unaware of this side of the job.
      Teaching is the same;so much of the job now is bombarded with red tape and paper work etc. so that the actual reason that people join the profession for [ie. the actual teaching and working with young people] is only a fraction of the job and hence explains why so many people are put off and leave the profession.

    • @shanefolan
      @shanefolan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think all the public service jobs[and indeed many jobs] nowadays in England are so radically different from what they once were or how the public perceives them that people are highly disillusioned by them once they join seeing the sausage factories they have become. Nursing and social work are two others I've heard that have gone the same way in recent years from those in the inside.
      It is not that they are hard work-rather it is more that they have become flooded with targets,government initiatives, bullying management/difficult colleagues, bureaucracy,accountability,performance management and all the rest before one even gets to do the aspects of the job that you see advertised and which attracts people. It's why you often hear veterans in the jobs say things like 'it's not the job it was when I started in 1991'. Worse is that the media and advertising still promote/sell these jobs to be how people wrongly perceive them rather than what they are.
      I laugh [in despair] when people watch movies like Dangerous Minds or look at the teaching adverts and say it inspires them to teach when that's a mere Hollywood fantasy and very different to the cold reality of being in a classroom in a school in 2020. Likewise the same goes for all the movies and tv shows about cops and nurses etc like ER. which sells the profession as glamorous and detached from reality.
      If you watch Educating Essex etc. it's still only a part of the picture of what working in a school means for example and much of the bad stuff has being left out.

    A 20 week course plus 3 weeks driving course on average for forces up and down the country, and its simply not enough. A 25 week +3 driving course is what is required. 6 Weeks and they are not going to be prepared for the stuff they will face. They are taking know it all law graduates and putting them on the frontline which will increase police assaults, and create poor investigative work. Even advanced first aiders (ECSW's / ECA's in the Ambulance services) do longer training courses and all they have to train for is how to drive and first aid. Stop cutting corners to cut costs.

    It took me 18wks and then a two year probationary period before I was certified, which is what everyone should have to do. Six weeks is ridiculous ! And the corporate guy in this (the CEO who begins every sentence with ‘So’, a bloody annoying trait of the office dweller) clearly hasn’t got a clue ! You can make it as intensive as you want but that still doesn’t give the recruit what they really NEED ! Repetition of scenarios, Officer safety training, and time to digest exactly what it is they’re getting themselves into and what they’re going to encounter. Six weeks preps them for NOTHING ! The job is much more than being able to pass a few exams. What they’ve actually done is created a production line to pump out fresh PCs at a much lower cost, but at what risk ? Not only to the public, but their own colleagues !

    • @YouTubenonesense
      @YouTubenonesense 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You are partly right but also unfair in many ways. Even when you get a driving licence you will still learn more with time how to drive better from experience as an example. The same here, any new recruit will learn and get better with time, some of them will probably realise this job is not for them anyway. This will be natural selection at the end of the day. Yes 6 weeks is not enough, maybe one year is not enough still they need people to do this job and their budget is tight.
      You cannot buy experience you can only acquire experience with time and anybody starts somewhere.

Phoned them today after getting threatened, 35 min wait, no answer. Called at police station....closed down. Tried again using a phone stuck to the wall outside in the rain, they were not interested. Never actually got to speak to a real officer at all that day, only another civvy helper on 'live chat' when I got home to complain! One paramedic on T.V. recently said she spends two thirds of her time dealing with the same drunks and druggies time after time. 6 weeks of training?! Omg!!! In Germany you have to pass a training of two and a half years to become a police officer (lowest rank Polizeimeister/paid like a sergeant in the armed forces) or you have have to pass 3 years of Bachelor studies. And that you have to do for becoming a police officer in some German states. For example in Hesse is the lowest rank Polizeikommissar. After passing this study you are a Polizeikommissar (paid like a lieutenant in the armed forces).
    But in Germany every police officer carries a gun and is basically trained in every part of police service. I don't feel safe when I visit the UK with the knowledge of short trained police. I also know about the requirements for becoming a police officer in the UK. Sometimes I think they are not strong enough in Germany. That means the physical tests and the assessment center are not hard enough in the last years. But than I look to the UK and see it could be a lot worse!!!

    what the hell. in America cops get 6 months to a year of training before they hit the street for an additional 6 months under a training officer.
    3 months isn't enough and six weeks sure as hell isn't

  • @jimmpas1
    @jimmpas1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    6 Weeks... that is for sure a very intensive period! In Sweden if you are cleared after all the tests and psychology interviews and more, there are 2 years of schooling in Police university/campus. After completing these 2 years you will then go out in the real world with the police colleagues at the department you will join later on and be tested for 6 months at what is called "aspiranten". There you will be monitored by a mentor and learn alot from your colleagues in the field of duty. If you pass this, you will become a police officer. But there is a chance that they do not see you fit for duty and therefor you will not pass the last step.

    This is why the quality of the police has declined significantly over the years. They started lowering the requirements during the late 90's and this is where we've come to - just 6 weeks. They're more concerned about trying to trick minority groups into joining the force than they are producing good police officers.
    What they refuse to accept is that the police force just isn't a viable career choice among many cultures. South Asian families for example want their songs to become doctors/GP's. Black families tend to push their kids towards sports. All they're doing by lowering the standards and effectively banning white males from joining is creating a shortage of constables when there's an abundance of young men who would make good police officers and would help make London a safer place.
    It's really just another example of how multiculturalism has failed.

      @@runb32 very different ... Bundespolizei (federal police) earns more than the average state police. And it belongs if you start as a Kommissar (about Lieutenant in Nato code) or after a study as a Rat ( its equivalent to generals ;) But a normal Komissar, 50 years of age, married, two kids, 30years service....about 3500 euros. I think average income after the training years will be about 2000 euros.

      @@quezz3461 A CTSFO would be at least a fair few years (at least 5) as an AFO. You'd have to complete the 2 years probation before even starting an AFO course. You sound like you'd be joining too much for the guns, rather than all the policing work that goes with armed officers. Maybe consider something like the Armed Forces - or even in the police world the CNC or MoD Police. All their officers are armed and train heavily for 'combat' situations, especially the CNC!
