    Hi Bruce
    Because I am predoominantly a studio user I dont fiddle with WhiteBalance because I'm set with flash. Then I use Filmic and, as I a low-key shooter I slide the Black Point slider to the right and get deep blacks wgich can swallow lighting stands, blemishes on the studio floor without affecting my subject. I love local contrast and i enjoy the default values so i just turn it on. I use Monochrome module , shrink the circle down and if, say, a model is wearing a red dress I can lighten it by moving the selection circle to the centre red square, which lightens her dress. If I move it to a blue square it will darken her dress. If I am out out and about in the "blue room" (under a sunny sky) the red filter will darken the sky. As a film photographer in the seventies I had Y, O, R, G ,Tungsten, UV and Daylight filters, Yellow darkens skies, Orange minimises freckles , Green lightens foliage, Red blackens blue skies. UV and Daylight filters were meant to remove the blue haze in landscapes.

      Nice! It's been so long since I shot film, I don't know if I'd even remember what filters were what (if you hadn't just reminded me!).

    As someone living in the Arctic (although not Alaska), my experience is that autumn is better for Northern lights, mainly because there is less snow and therefore darker. Mind you, I was able to get some spectacular shots of aurora from that solar eruption you mentioned.

      Glad to hear you got some great images, Tord! We will be there in autumn (or Fall, as the Yanks would call it!) so fingers crossed! :)

    Hi Bruce, thanks for this nice summary, just back from Anchor Wat, and this will help in getting my processing started. Yes, filmic RGB update would be great. Looking at noise reduction, I would also appreciate an update if possible, as the module seems so different, from previous ones. I watched your previous 3y old video, but the module seems different, has now a graph of some sort. I do some bird photography and seem to struggle with denoise profiled, having sometimes blurred color dots in plumage when applied. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Should you combine Denoise modules, or stick to one, eg: raw denoise & denoise profiled? Thanks in advance, Hugues

    • @audio2u
      @audio2u  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would definitely start with RAW denoise. Back it off manually if it is messing with fine details. And then, given the detail on the plumage, maybe try using the astro-denoise as well, as it is designed to not mess with small stars.

    Hi Bruce!
    Very nice summary of the most important modules! Just one questions about generating monochrome images form colored images: I prefer to use the gray tab of the color calibration module. It allows for great control and comes with nice presets.
    You recommend the monochrome module. What's in your opinion the advantages of this module?

    • @audio2u
      @audio2u  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like its colour wheel, which is akin to shooting black and white film with a coloured filter. But the beauty of darktable is there are multiple ways to achieve almost anything. There's no right and wrong. If the gray tab of the CC module works for you, stick with that! 😃

    Isn't RGB curves a display referred module and we are supposed to migrate to scene referred workflow?

    • @audio2u
      @audio2u  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, we should be using scene-referred modules wherever there is the option to do so.
      I thought the RGB curve was scene-referred. I'd need to check that.

  • @kaapiosimpanssibonobo1864

    Man, I'm having a hard time keeping up which module is outdated and what is not. For example rbg curve is outdated, yes? Is there a list somewhere that keep an eye on what modules are recommended?

    • @audio2u
      @audio2u  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Open the module manager from the hamburger (below the histogram) and select the preset called "worklfow scene-referred".

      @@audio2u I actually ended up downloading the RawTherapee Film Simulations - pack for Darktable and found some great joy from that.
      I apply a film preset of my liking with 3D LUT to a bare raw file using the scene referred workflow and proceed to edit as normal from there.

    Greetings from Finland!
    I just updated my DT because the older version what I had, didn`t read CR3-files that my new Canon R7 records.
    Two questions:
    1. This newest version 4.2.1 won`t read CR2 files anymore, how can I fix that?
    2. I cant find favorite group (star icon) anymore where I could put all my favorite modules that I use?
    Thanks!
    -Janne

    • @audio2u
      @audio2u  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't believe that CR2 support has been REMOVED... that would be crazy! :)
      And that is not a darktable issue anyway. That would be something to do with lensfun, which is an external database that dt references. Maybe google if there's a way to update lensfun?
      As for favourite modules, your best bet would be to open the module manager window (you can do that from the hamburger menu (the right-most icon which appears under the histogram), and great your ownn favourite group in there.
