Always a treat to have you go in depth on these areas. Even when i was searching for just one specific part of it, you provide a valuable source to go back to. Thanks for making the darktable community strive
Hello Bruce, watching your darktable episodes in 2023. I want to thank you for the professional and clear contents you're providing to the community of photographers. all the best to you from Europe !
Thanks so much, Bruce! Another very helpful video - I know I'm seeing it late, but I've still learnt a lot ... now on to your next video about masks!! 😄🙏
Parametric masks (or masking technic in general) are a powerful and complex tool in DT, so thanks for re-open this topic on your channel. I'm looking forward to watching ep 109.
Will watch this later but just chipping in to say that, as a recent migrant from Lightroom, one of the things I really like about Darktable is the absolutely awesome masking flexibility and power. I'm still getting my head around colour management - even restricting modules to the scene-referred set there still seems to be a multitude of ways to go about things. But I'm starting to get my head around it and your videos (along with Boris Hadjukovic) have been of huge assistance. Thank you.
With Multiply mode (and possibly others) the Blend fulcrum is very useful. It will make the whole image lighter (if you go to the right) and then you can adjust the opacity too. It's useful for adding contrast. It's well worth investigating.
Great video Bruce...I had a chuckle at your comment a lot has changed....Pascal added the ability to control individual nodes in brush masks to alter size feather etc at that level like a day or so ago...Boris demonstrated in his video a couple of days ago showing how a single brush stroke could mask a foot path of varying width....just when you think you are caught up with DT ...something changes..... One last comment...if you use reverse blending you do actually affect areas outside the mask and so your comment at the end of this video is essentially true in most cases but not all.....:)
Thanks for this. Followed all the way up to gradient mask. Mine covered the whole of the picture when I activated display mask and didn't look like the video, opaque at top and clear at bottom.
@@audio2u Thanks for reply. I don't have a clear concept of what 'hardness' is or how to increase its value. By trial and error I eventually got the display mask to line up with the gradient line by pressing 'shift
Great videos, as always! I usually avoid masks as much as possible, just because I still don't feel completely comfortable using them. I definitely need more practice; theory like this helps a lot!
Hello Bruce, happy easter time. Thank you very much for your great tutorials, always very interessting. One question: How do you changed the appearance of the path to red (and a thicker line)? At my darktable it is grey (sometimes bad visible and very thin).
I'm not at my machine right now, so this is just a wild guess... Have a look at the overlay settings, which can be accessed via the icon with the green and red crossed lines (lower right corner of the central part of the UI).
@@audio2u: Thank you for the fast answer, I found the possibility to adjust at least the color. And again, your tutorials are great, thank you very much.
Does not see the camera? Are you shooting tethered? Or are you trying to mount the camera to your system to retrieve images from the memory card? If so, I'd recommend removing the card from the camera and mounting it in a card reader.
@@audio2u yes i am trying to shot tethered. i know the computer sees the camera however dt does not . i have 2 systems one running ubuntu another mint neither see the 5d3 as i try to shot tethered. again thank you
I'm a little out of my depth on this one, having not used the tethered shooting feature in dt at all. I don't even know if my a7iii is a supported camera.

Glad to help! :)

Thanks for the kind words
Love the way you teach, Bruce.
Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated.

Yes, its one of the apps strongest features, in my opinion! Cheers.
Excellent explanation as always. I'm glad you decided to reboot the masks videos with a much more recent version. thanks
Yeah, it was time. My understanding had improved since I did the original batch way back when! :)
a blessed Easter Bruce, thank you for the video
Cheers!
Another very helpful darktable video without out overloading the brain!
That's why I'm making this a whole series of videos!
Nice simple explanation of the basics. Exactly what I needed!
Good to hear!👍

Very well explained. Love it and have subscribed to your channel. Thanks for sharing,
No problem. Thanks for the support!
Thank you a great tutorial. I have Darktable 4.6.1 and all the mentioned mask functions in this tutorial video are the same.
Good to know! :)
4:33 What about "blend fulcrum" slider, what does it do?

Todd, yeah I saw that you had posted Abbott the brush changes. But I'll cover that when it's in an official release.
But thanks for the heads up! 😃
Great explanation as usual. Thanks Bruce.
Cheers!
super hyper full helpful to me and beautifully explained!!!! ..lot of details here very important to learn.. thanks very very much!!!!
Any time!
Excellent. Thank you.
You are welcome!

Try increasing the hardness value, and then look at the mask again.

Hardness is one of the controls in the graduated drawn mask.
Very helpful and concise, thanks.
You're welcome!
11:17 or draw it, from the begging, holding "Ctrl" key.
awesome ... again 🙂
Thank you! Cheers!

Get into it! Spend time coming to terms with them... I promise you it will be worth the time spent!
Absolutely!

What ever happened to compose steady shoot.?
Sorry? Not sure what you mean?
These masks are all vector based - are there also pixel based masks?
Sadly, no. That really would be the icing on the cake.
Merci.
Cheers!
Accidentally deleted a drawn mask? Ctrl+z :)
