Brodie, Brodie... I can remember when a 16' digger was the norm. We sat in the seat for days on end and got the job done.

Old school...hook up hydraulics first to raise tongue but would have probably had to swing hitch on tractor because of hyd. hose length...had lots of machinery that didn't use jacks...then when unhook would have to put tongue down to take pressure off hyd. hoses...need to put Baby Talk/Brody on a 2 bottom plow then he would appreciate 24 ft. digger...lol !!!

OMG what memories, hundreds of hours in a 4020 and 18' vibra shank working ahead of the drills and summer fallowing.

I spent many many hours pulling a 14 foot cultivator behind a JD 4020! Would have killed to have a 24Foot.
My dad had a 24 foot field cultivator that he pulled with a Case 2290. That was a huge upgrade for him. Back in the 80s most farmers around here only farmed 600-800 acres. There were a few that farmed 3000 acres and they were considered large farmers then.
When we farmed from 1974 to 1993, we had a 930 Case, an R John Deere, an LA Case, an A John Deere and a U Moline. We had the small implements to match! We farmed 80 acres and worked in a local factory on the night shift. It was fun but we got it done. Now we just plant our gardens and enjoy 🍅s, 🥔's, squash, radishes, asparagus and 🥕s! When my uncle had a dairy farm the biggest tractor was 85hp no cab pulled a 4 bottom plow and a 10ft disc harrow over 200 acres. Needless to say it took a while to get the tillage done. After tillage he got the Farmall H out and planted with a 4 row JD planter the old one where you had to change the plates for the seed shape and size. Farming has indeed changed but I still love it.

The old time farmer's were rough and tough guys. Open cabs no heat or ac no auto steer no GPS you just got it done.
They have gotten really soft skinned threw the years that's for sure
I was Trained to listen to your equipment as you worked the fields. No radio no phone no tablet.all this new equipment I might know how to start it.after that I'm lost I'm a rotary phone type of guy.
All Tractors all have heat. It’s just whether or not you can feel it in the winter. But you can damn sure feel it in the summer.
Got to tell you I'm still one of those. 11 tractors on this farm one of the full cab one with a canopy all the rest are open station
Ask grandpa how much time it took to farm when he started farming he did it all without touch screens and auto steer OMG 🤣🤣
In 1963, my dad traded his D2 Caterpillar for a John Deere 4020. He got a 24 ft digger that folded, a 5 /16' s mold board plow and a 20 ft disc with it. The disc and digger were set at 6" and the plow at 12". We pulled it all at about 4 mph. The 4020 was really maxed out, probably a little overworked. We watched the exhaust manifold get cherry red sometimes. In '76, he traded in the 4020 for a used 4430. That pulled the equipment much easier but we still went 4 mph. He had the same equipment until he retired in 2001. Not bad for someone who started out with horses and horse drawn equipment and who's father hand planted and hand harvested all his crops!

I remember using a 15ft digger we farmed 1100 ac planted with 6 row planter and a 13ft drill you had to set on them from day light to midnight and we didn't have to do it all in a week

We had a 886 international 92 horsepower pulled a 18.5 foot ih digger for years with it frist day working with kicked the crap out of it after that it played with it depth control was the dust mark on the cylinder u could drop it on the fly with out looking once and a while u would be stoped died when the hydraulic liver stuck
I love going old school every once in awhile to appreciate more what you have today. Sometimes I like going back to using our old spring tooth drags. No hydraulics to blow up just set it and go.

We had a 24 foot that was pulled by a 1566. It was big in 1975.

Happy Father's Day, Dougo, grandpa Earl and uncle Randy. I would definite keep it....couple hydro lines and few tires it will last another 30 yrs or so. Heck even the paint job is mint, besides it's a Deere. Chet you enjoyed it, brought smiles to your face knowing that grandpa used it, someday you can show your kids and tell them it was great grandpas.
Love seeing you have so much fun Chet! Growing up, I wasn’t a farmer however, I would see the farm trucks planting and the equipment going by all summer long. It’s because they had small equipment. Nothing like yours today.!

Chet the idea is to make sure that every single piece of equipment is ready to go to the field and that means making sure that the tires on each of those pieces of equipment should be checked before heading to the field 8 or so miles away from the farm

Answer to brody question, there were a lot more smaller farmers which quit farming and started renting their farms. So 24ft was ebought back then people used to do less acres.

3 point digger, no cab when I was younger. Almost disaster when one pin broke and digger climbed the reear tractor tire. Luckily my brother was quick on the clutch!
When i was a kid we used 18 footers doing 150 acre fields and we farmed 12,000 acres and it took forever. We use to run in shifts until everything was planted. Ask dougo what it was like lol and make him talk about it on youtube lol.
Their were more Farmers in the 80's, but a lot less of them by the 90's. It blows my mind how much ground you guys have.
We farmed with a 2955 JD FWA tractor, and an 18 foot cultivator. 290 acres. Big time Souther Ontario farmers lol.
I still have a 8 foot disc from 1962 that I still use behind a old Massey. Lol...
I have an 18' field cultivator (as they are known in IN and IL) that I still use. Yours has better paint but mine folds! I use it for my sweetcorn patch and a few random odd jobs. I can remember pulling one about 12' with a Case 400, 4th gear, about 4 mph. Start in the morning, run a few hours after dark with the 2 dim headlights and 1 rear light on that tractor and maybe get 50-60 acres done. Of course we only farmed 650 acres and a lot of that was hay, pasture, or wheat and oats so there wasn't as much to rush through in the spring.

That's a nice plow. Keep IT.... It's paid for. Just replace the hoses and tires. You never know when you will something like that for small jobs.
Old iron still knows what works! The wide replacement could get put on one of front wheels n put the skinny one in hole! Keep up the great work
Shovels are put on flat head cultavater bolts they where flat head bolts. 2 per perr shovel and air wrench and sometimes u had to use the cutting torch to get them off

Holy cats!! When I saw you guys standing around the digger, analyzing that rim, I thought sure it was a state, or at least a county government project. I missed seeing someone leaning on a shovel though. THAT one factor made me think it was still local. Otherwise, it looked like guv mint project. Four guys "talking" and no work getting done!! LOL Hard to imagine how farming "used to be" isn't it?? That "ancient" piece of equipment is just the ticket to do that job. Good thing it was still there in the weeds. Those "old geezers" worked like mad in their day. Might not have had a 500 acre day, but they sure put in some long ones. Thanks again for another entertaining AND informative video. Love the history AND the latest stuff.
We had eight hands farming just under 2000 acres. Now less than a handful farm 8000 acres. Or more. Times sure have changed a lot. We also had steers, cow-calf pairs, a few hogs and sheep and grew all the feed for them too. Never a dull moment.

Did you guys even grease the old digger?😁 I'm a year older than Dougo, and all I got to use was a 10 feet digger with a John Deere 730 tractor. A couple of times we borrowed a neighbors 18' vibrashank. It was HUGE for us. Our swather was a CCIL 14'. No cabs on any of them. You had to keep your mouth closed all day so that you didn't end up eating a mouthful of dirt.
My first tractor I drove when I was 10 years old was my dad's 60 j.d.
Knock it back down to a 18 foot and pull it with the 1086. Throwback style.

I remember when I was a kid my dad put me in the 4320 with a 3pt 18 foot digger always had to put weights in the rock box
We've got two of thoes same Jack's. And they scare me too but they work wonders, I love them.
I started 40 years ago at age 5 with a 5 bottom 16” plow ar 4.5-5 mph on a 200 ac field
I would keep that small digger; it's paid for. Probably not the last year for wickung water. Brody staked his claim on best beans, get your $$$$

The chain is old school depth control its a quick visual of wether its pulling deep or shallow even though you can feel this you lift or lower the cultivator until the chain just touches the ground again

We called it a feld calivater and used them in front of the planter only used the dist for first pass unless you plowed first

We hung chains off the front of the diggers and when that dangled on the ground we were at the rite depth. I think it would of been nostalgic to to pull it with the 1086.

It's really funny listening to you folks saying how small a 24 foot scuffle is (English for digger). Here in the UK you wouldnt be able to get that up most roads and most country lanes would be impossible, you cant get two cars to passed each other, you have to back up to passing places. So 24 foot is massive tack over here. The biggest field gateways would be 20 foot. Really enjoy the videos watching your huge tack the 91 foot roll is brilliant.
