Cassidy's First Solo | 16 Year Old Female AFJROTC Cadet Makes Her First Solo Flight

- Cassidy makes her first solo flight in an airplane as a 16 year old at KECG in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. This video is the uncut long version of Cassidy's entire first FAA required solo flight in the pattern with three takeoffs and landings to a complete stop.
She is flying N285VN, a Cessna 172 Skyhawk out of Elizabeth City State University Flight Academy. 16 is the youngest age you can solo an airplane. Within 3 weeks she will turn 17 years old, at which point she will take her check ride and hopefully receive her Private Pilots License in a few weeks time.
Thank you to (Ret) Colonel Kyle Forrer, Senior Space science instructor and director of the Junior AFROTC program at Seminole High School in Sanford, FL, and the rest of those instructors and leaders who believed in Cassidy and stood behind and supported her dreams of being a pilot.
We certainly want to recognize Norm Johnson, the creator and instructor of the aviation program at Seminole High School in Sanford, Florida. Working hard to create programs to teach aviation mechanics and ground school to young high school students. In fact Cassidy passed her written from the knowledge she gained in Mr. Johnson's ground school class.
And finally need to give a shout out to Charles Davis and the Orlando Sanford Aero Club for being so supportive of young flyers and giving back to the community. All of these men have worked together to create opportunities for these young men and women to pursue rewarding careers in aviation.

I am sorry I have not posted recently! I have not been on many flights since I went back home which was around August. Hopefully I will have more content soon and can post another video. Thank you for your patience :)
Congratulations on your first solo a day youll always remember , my 1st solo feb 1, 1974! I told the controller that I was on my 1st solo, he replied, this is my 1st day controlling too!
That’s so sweet thank you for watching!
I've seen a lot of first solo videos and this was by far the most fun i've had watching. I wish i started flying as young as you have. Keep at it, good job!
Thank you so much it was definitely an amazing opportunity!
This made me smile so hard! I love that pure joy of a first solo landing. Very nicely done. I’m jealous I didn’t get started when I was younger like you. You do the aviation community. Proud! Continue to thrive on your journey!
Thank You! My dad is also jealous that I was able to solo, get my license, and have 100 hours all in the span of nine weeks. It really was a blessing that I was given this opportunity! Thank You for watching!!
So... this was the FIRST solo on TH-cam I've seen some real training. She was good at the ground work and cleared traffic. What worried me was in the pattern she relied on the controller for her base turn but never once looked to her left for traffic. She never looked on base or turning final. PLEASE... the one thing they teach in military flight school is to put your head on a swivel, especially in a traffic pattern. Aside from that single potentially fatal flaw... she appeared great, professional and confident... a LOT more than I can say for so many of the solo flight posted on TH-cam. Congrats.
Thank you for all the advice. Your right I should’ve been looking to my left I was probably just hyper fixated inside since I have a g1000. The MFD showed me all traffic in the area so I was not too concerned.
As for relying on ATC to call my base turn, if you are talking about the first landing, they told me to extend my base for a mile to give the stop and go traffic some space. Usually when the pattern isn’t busy, I turn base myself and let ATC know!
@@RealeFlight On one hand in instrument flying you learn to rely solely on your instruments and 'always' believe them but in clear weather in a traffic pattern your eyes should always be outside with the occasional glance at airspeed. The g1000 depends on other systems to report traffic and if they are not working no traffic will appear. Regarding your extended base that is normal to listen to the controller and it's normal to turn base and final yourself if not otherwise instructed. Regardless, before doing either you must please look left and right before initiating your turns. What concerns me most is each week now we hear about fatal GA crashes and some with experienced pilots... most are stall spin related which just emphasizes lack of attention to detail and it doesn't take half a second to become a statistic in an airplane. (I'm a 4800 hr commercial fixed/rotary pilot)... be safe.
@@mynosycatThanks!
Big fan here of Flying with Kay. Looking forward to your channel flights in the near future. Smart gal, great personality, informative and interesting!!! Just subbed 5/19/24. 71 yrs old married gent here - soloed in a Taylor Craft in my 20s!!
Thank You! I have much more content to shoot, however its been tough with my school and work schedules. Once I can get my own plane, maybe I can fly more often and film like Kay does. Thanks for your support.
This was the most fun first solo video I’ve ever seen! Good luck with the rest of the program!
Thank you for that! This was the first video her parents saw (us) since we skippered her off to the flight school. last time I saw her she had never spoken to ATC. Now she sounds better than me! LOL
The other video shows her getting the news she won the scholarship.
@@RealeFlight yes! Her R/T is so natural. Looking forward to more vids!
You are amazing! Your ATC skills are just... Wow! And landings seemed very smooth. I wish you had a second gopro for front view! Please post more videos!
Btw I'm not a pilot, I'm just really into aviation and flight sims recently. But maybe one day...
Thank you so much! To be honest, life has just been so busy and I have flown 4 times since august. It sucks but that’s how life works. I believe you can one day and I hope your dreams come true too!
I remember my first solo in Phoenix. As I was taxiing out, I looked in the right seat and nobody there :). What a wonderful feeling. As for your video Cassidy, congratulations. I also want to comment on the ATC. This gentleman was excellent!!
Coming back home to a class Charlie airport I am definitely missing those ATC guys. Solo was amazing but my check ride was even better!
Let's go!!! I just solod for the first time this week too. Best feeling in the world!!
Isn't it though? It took a while for me to get the hang of the landings but after some practice I was feeling really good. Thanks for watching.
Wow… this is so amazing! You have achieved so many great things so far. Cant imagine how many more you’ll achieve throughout your life. Congratulations, stay safe, and good luck with everything you do💕🙏🏼🛩️
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate it
So PROUD of you! You bring tears to my eyes. You're doing the dream I've always wished for. Fly high and be safe!
I’m am so honored to have received this amazing opportunity! Thank you for watching it means a lot.
Great job. Very confident! with a little humorous but sincere humility.
I was confident but there’s always a little nervous feeling when flying a plane by yourself at 16… I think talking a lot was a way for me to not think about it.
It makes me so happy seeing more and more young people getting into the air! Fantastic solo! ✌️
there were quite a few applicants for this scholarship, over 2,000. So hopefully there will be more pilots coming on board soon. BTW. I got my PPL a few weeks later! :)
I've seen a lot of these 1st flights; this one inspires, by far, the most admiration and confidence. Nice work Cassidy and Dad.
Thank you I definitely showed more confidence than I was feeling.
I watch lot of these first solo student flights but I have never seen anyone so confident and chilled out lol Don.
Thank you! I had 55 hours leading up to my solo and it was all at this airport so I was very confident.
Wow so just curious why did they wait 55hrs to solo you? I'd have to look at my logbook to be sure but I think I had 58hrs the day of my checkride?and around 13 for first solo
And superb job btw I was nowhere as radio proficient nor were my landings so consistent!!! Great job
@@lightningtowing00 it was an 8 week accelerated program and they were basing their training off a part 141 curriculum so I had to pass the pre-solo check exam before my solo. It was steep turns, s-turns, stalls, and landings and more. It took my a while to pass that and definitely longer than the other students there. I just learn a little slower but that’s okay and is why it took me 3 weeks and 55 hours to do it. I did my checkride at 100 hours!
Watching this from the uk, soooo proud of you for doing this!!! You made it look sooo easy!! hope you had a good subway after lol!!!
They barely toasted my subway 😢
This video is great for one thing that might surprise you: It is free of annoying music! I love music, but NOT when it ruins a great video! I forget about the real star (the pilot) and lose focus.
Thank you for Watching!
Well done. Congrats and greetings from Norway.
Thank you so much I appreciate it!
Excellent job young lady.
I watched you a few times and I think you are so funny and the best student pilot congratulations be safe😊
Thank you so much I appreciate it. Hopefully I can make some more videos soon!
Way to go Cassidy!!
Thank You for watching!
Impressive your confidence, your awareness and radio pronouncements and you had fun, well done ❤
It was fun thank you so much for watching!
How incredible!!!!! You're a Rockstar kid!!!!
Thank you so much I ended up getting my PPL a month later!
Well done! Great comms! Beautiful job. Love your enthusiasm!
Thanks so much! Thanks for Watching!
Very, very cool, Cassidy! Congrats!
Thank you so much
Well done 👍 I love you Cassidy your the best pilot 👩✈️ in the world 🌎
Cassidy nice job flying the plane hope the best for you God Bless.🤠
Thank you!
Nice job Cassidy! You are a goof ball (in a good way). Keep up the excellent work!
Thank you! LOL
Awesome! Congrats Cassidy!
Thank you!!
So relaxed! Congrats!
Thank you so much
Cassidy, I am so proud of you.
Thank you Mr. Johnson!
Amazing!
Thanks!
You're flying with a very well organized tower!!
Thank you!!!
Nicest ATC person i've heard in awhile...
They were the best especially for having 4+ student pilots in the pattern at a time
Good Job Dinga! Super Proud of you!
I remember when I realized I was about to make my first solo. I was just going to add full power for take off. My instructor said wait a minute, opened his door and got out. He said you're ready, do three take offs and landings, closed the door and walked away.
I love when instructors do that. I didn’t get that because my course was so accelerated but I loved my flight anyway
So proud of you!
Thank You!
Love watching solo's and Cassidy did not dissapoint. I notice there are only 2 videos, does Cassidy have a flight youtube?
Hi! It’s Cassidy. Thank you so much! This channel is going to be about my dad and I flying. We are working on getting a plane and hopefully more videos will come soon. I am in my senior year of high school so I am currently a little too busy to make and edit video’s but if you were wondering, I actually got my PPL in august! I was hoping to make a flight academy experience video and the journey to my PPL!
That is so awesome! Congrats! Looking forward to some more videos eventually. One day I will get my PPL started and finished. I do some basic editing, if you need some help, I’d be willing to lend a hand for free. Just enjoy helping others :) again, congrats!
@@LoadingStudiosmy dad actually helps make and edit my video’s but thank you so much!
How is her ATC proficiency so good at just her first solo?
Lots and lots of practice. Plus it was a rather busy Class D field so that helped alot. Thanks for watching!
That's the way it supposed to be, otherwise she's not ready. Congratulations girl, you never forget that day.
go go go nice so smooth way to go
Thank you!
My first solo is coming up as soon as I get my medical done, which will be in a few days and I’m terrified 😂 I’m scared I’ll get up there, panic and can’t land.
As long as you can do it with your instructor you can do it by yourself I promise!
Congratulations Cassidy!
Thank You!
Keep up the good! One of my primary instructors taught her granddaughter to fly. From there it was off to the Air Force Academy and she's now flying the C-17. @@RealeFlight
@@michaelfagan2403oh wow. I used to want to go the Air Force way but I’m leaning more towards commercial now!
You go girl!👏🏻👍
Thank You!!
Perfeito.
Obrigado!
nicely done i love your attitude or should i say altitude.
Nice one
I can see where learning through a program designed to train young people specifically, has merit.
It was an opportunity of a lifetime for sure!
Just a quick question for the ROTC scholarship do you have to serve in the military
No. there is no commitment other than being in the JR ROTC program and in good standing. I believe that the acting CO has a bit to do with the selecting process as well. Thanks for watching!
@@RealeFlight ok because I think that I’ll probably try to go this route I wasn’t to sure about serving in the military but thanks congratulations also
what an awesome controller
He was the best
Great Job!
Thank you!
Great job, Cassidy! Those were some greasers!
I was struggling to get the landings right. But after practice I became more confident. Thank You!
Sweet
Thanks for watching. We will be posting other cadets' first solos soon. they are all great to watch.
Congratulations on the solo! Can you give me some tips on how to find love in the world? Thank you so much!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Well, I love flying!! So maybe that can be your love too!!! Lol
I love ❤️ this one ☝️
Thank you!
@@RealeFlight your welcome 🤗😘😘
Nice job.
Thank You!!
U got any advice for me I’m going to solo in about 2 weeks
As long as you are confident in yourself, you will be just fine. I would say, if you have even one slight hint of fear that something g bad could happen, don’t fly. I was in a time sensitive program so I was saying to myself “I just need to get it over with” but please be cautious and be humble at all times!
Huh... so that airfield/ATC allows a Full Stop Landing without an ATC Landing Clearance? 🤔 Definitely a VERY relaxed environment (maybe TOO relaxed and unsterile) inside and outside the cockpit on that flight. The checklist "Abort Plan" at 9:29 went past faster than a song lyric. Just sayin...
Thanks for the comment! And thank you for watching!
That was Elizabeth City NC. It's a class D airfield, tower controlled. It is a flight academy that flies, so when she received initial clearance for "stop and goes", ATC marked her for the three she would be doing. Those ATCs do this day in and day out.
@@RealeFlight Thank you. Seems to confirm the tower did not/ "does not" announce to other traffic in the pattern that she was going to do a Full Stop on her final Stop and Go per their common procedure. Best of luck in her flying career!
Beethoven's Fur Elise and ABBA'sMama Mia - What's not to like??????
High Five landings!
Thank you!!!!
woot woot Yo Go Girl show em what you got nothing going to stop you now.
Thank you! I finally got my PPL shortly after. Now that I am back in Florida I am getting signed out in our club Cessna's and Pipers. Thanks for watching
Pretty good job Mamma Mia (Abba).
Gracias!!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank You!
That go pro camera is a distraction right from the walk around, !!! …. There is a very good reason why airlines have a sterile cockpit rule
Thank you for your concern! Soloing at 55 hours, I was very confident in my flight and pre flight skills and would never fly if it was unsafe. The preflight was before I went up with my instructor who also walked around to make sure everything was good. we then went up and did 3 landings until he left the cockpit and it was just me! We also have a sterile cockpit rule but I was advised that talking to myself would help me stay focused and safe. Hitting record was the only time I was not focused on the cockpit.
🎉😢😮😮
Temp 28, no so comfortable with windows closed ..
That was 28 degrees Celsius. What is wrong with my windows being closed?
@@RealeFlight It gets sweaty quick on the ground...
@I open my windows a lot on the ground actually. We had air vents but if it was too hot, my CFI would open his window lol.
Congratulations on your first solo. Things are a little more relaxed in the US than the UK I think. Personally I would prefer to see less making a UT video and more being a Pilot In Command.A silent video would be more professional but less engaging for the viewers.
Thank you for watching! To be honest, I didn’t solo until 55 hours so I was very confident in my flying skills. Even if I were not to record, I would’ve been talking to myself the whole time since it’s so silent the first solo flight. I knew my limits and so did my instructor and that is why I felt very comfortable recording :)
