Released in November 1986, Licence To Ill is still to this day one of the finest rap albums ever….period!!
It was the first rap album to go to the top of the US Billboard Chart & what makes that even more impressive is the fact that the Beastie Boys had no headlining tour under their belts at that point & little to no radio air play.
On July 22, 1986, Beastie Boys opened for John Lydon's post-Sex Pistols band Public Image Ltd and then supported Madonna on her North American The Virgin Tour (only to get kicked off the tour after a handful of shows). The Beastie Boys then toured with Fishbone and Murphy's Law with DJ Hurricane and later in the year, the group was on the now legendary ‘Raising Hell’ tour with Run-DMC, Whodini, LL Cool J, and the Timex Social Club.
I was lucky enough to see the Beastie Boys several times in the 1990s & early 2000s…& those shows were some of the best I’ve ever seen.

They were so influential and pretty much every genre of rap and hip hop respects them like crazy. They originally tried being like a punk band and kept getting turned down so the decided to do hip hop rap as a joke! They weren’t into the scene but it turned out they did it so well everyone loved them and exploded! So they said, “We may be on to something”! Hahahaha so they ran with it and became one of The Godfather’s and they themselves fell in love with it too. Such a cool story.

Here's a little "fun fact" for ya. In 1986, while they were in the studio recording License To Ill, Slayer was in the adjacent studio recording their LP, "Reign In Blood". According to Kerry King (Guitarist for Slayer), Rick Ruben offered him "a couple hundred bucks" to come over and lay some guitar down for this track. He said it took him about half an hour to come up with, and record the main riff and the solo. Neat, huh?

  • @slayerbob213

Fun fact, the guy playing the guitar solo is Kerry King from Slayer. He also plays the guitar in fight for your right to party. It was when the beastie boys & Slayer were with Def Jam.

Good ol' Kerry King of Slayer shredding the guitar. Slayer got picked up by Def Jam because they were the only major label willing to sign them on. Turns out they were recording in the same location as Beastie Boys back in the day and got this gem done.

When these guys rolled up on the scene in the late 80s we were all like wtf is that. Rap was just fledgling at the time, and the BB took that and mixed it with metal and punk. There was no other energy out there to match. They were absolute monsters who ruled that day. Then came Paul's Boutique and we were once again all like wtf is that?

Rest in Power Adam Yauch. Even in his last few years of life he spent time, his time that he didn’t know how much he had left of, to educate people about getting yearly checkups once you turn 40. I started once I turned 30. He was such a talented artist and the family he had shared with his other bandmates is such a huge loss to all and any music lover. Also, all of their videos were directed by MCA after the first record on. These are the first white boys in a Hip-Hop band along with MC Search. They were the first to embrace the culture, not just the music! I don’t count Vinila Ice because he was a record label creation. When the Beasties did their own thing from the second album onwards they just got better and better.

If you like guitar work, check out this cover of “while my guitar gently weeps”, originally by the Beatles. This was at a tribute concert for George Harrison (one of the Beatles) who passed away back in 2001. If you hang tight, Prince comes out of nowhere with a bonkers guitar solo!

Licenses to Ill was basically Rick Rubin. After they got out from under his thumb they made one of the greatest Hip-Hop albums of all time. Paul’s Boutique may be a little busy at times but it is a master class of sampling. Then going back to almost all real instruments gave the world Check Your Head. An album of pure psychedelic, Hip-Hop bangers with some incredible social commentaries on the lyrical subjects and some insanely surprising instrumentals and hardcore tracks added into a cake which turned out perfect!!!!! Then Ill Communication which was to me the last album that had that ALL IN vibe. But their was horrible personal issues that they all we’re fighting. Through the Five Burrows was another great album but they should have called it a day then. Adam is a true legend and the fight he put on to finish that album is a rarity to see these days. MCA was the director of all of their Videos and he did an incredible job. Rest IN POWER MCA (Adam Yaugh)
