Beastie Boys - Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock. Sadly, we lost MCA (real name: Adam Yauch) in 2012, and the other two wouldn't dream of going on without him, so they hung it up, but not before they redefined the entire pop/hip-hop landscape WAY before Eminem came onto the scene. I hope you'll do "Sabotage", it's one of the coolest songs and VIDEOS of all time!! "Fight For Your Right (To Party)" was a HUGE rock song in the 80s as well.

I never really got into Beasty Boyz. I was too wrapped up in the Metal that ruled the world in those days. I did actually like this song even back then, and all these years later, now I know why. LMFAO.....I fckn love Slayer. Thanks for that info. I can't believe I didn't know that. 😂
“Licensed to Ill” is absolutely a masterpiece album. 100% classic. I bought the cassette, then the CD and now also have it digitally. It’s a start to finish LP. So glad you are experiencing ALL of Beasties flavas.

On this song, Kerry King from Slayer is playing guitar. On some later albums they would play their own instruments,Adrock on guitar, MCA on bass, and Mike D in drums, and they’d also have a DJ on the turntable, I know Mixmaster Mike was with them for a bit, but there have been several if you want to see them play check out a live performance of Sabotage

At the time Slayer shared both record labels with the Beastie Boys, (Def Jam Records) as well as producers (Rick Rubin). Anthrax also wrote a rap/rock song that was originally supposed to have the Beastie Boys rapping on it, but they could never get their schedules worked out and Anthrax ended up rapping as well. It is called “I’m The Man”

In the beginning of the Beastie Boys Career they originally were a punk band. They did actually play their own instruments on all of their albums. Every album was different. Kerry King of Slayer was the shredder of the guitar on this track and if I'm not mistaken he also did Fight for your right. Slayer and Beastie Boys shared a label and both were produced at the time by Rick Ruben. Slayer was in the same studio recording Reign in Blood which became one of the shortest and fastest thrash metal albums of all time. Anthrax and Public Enemy collaborated on the song Bring the Noise and I'm the Man. RUN DMC and Aerosmith did Walk this way. This was the middle 80's. I'm glad to have been a kid growing up to all of this . Boombox and everything.

"Intergalactic" and "Sabotage" are great songs from them!! I don't know if you guys have done their first big hit "Fight For Your Right To Party" but it's a great classic that people still play at parties. All the ones that I mentioned are even better with the Music Videos..

On later albums, the Beastie Boys played their instruments more but on this first album a lot of it came from Rick Rubin sampling classic rock. For instance, the Beastie's song "Rhymin' & Stealin'" samples the drums from Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks," the guitar riff from Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf," and a little bit of the Clash's cover of "I Fought The Law." On "No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn," you're hearing Kerry King (from Slayer) playing Angus Young's riff from AC/DC's "T.N.T." On "She's Crafty," they sampled Jimmy Page's guitar riff from Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean." In "Time To Get Ill," there's a bit of Led Zep's "Custard Pie." Elsewhere on the album, you get snippets from CCR, the theme from the TV show "Mr. Ed," and plenty of others.
Rick Rubin, btw, is also the same producer who brought Aerosmith and Run DMC together for "Walk This Way." In a lot of ways, Rick Rubin was the guy who helped rap cross over into the mainstream and brought black and white audiences together in a way that you didn't see a lot of at the time.

Their whole first album, just like Run DMC was full of sampled classic rock beats and riffs. Familiarity to the fans was crucial in getting rap music started in the 80s. As Chuck D said, "RUN DMC brought rap from the street corners to the edge of the boroughs in NY, the Beastie boys took it right down the main street America. The FIRST PLATINUM SELLING RAP ALBUM, the BIGGEST SELLING RAP ALBUM EVER! and a career that lasted from 1978 (The young and the useless and the Beastie boys bands united) until 2012.
My favorite line, "ain't seen the light since we started this band, MCA get on the mic, my man!"
Okay your surprise at this sound makes me think you’ve never heard their classic song “Fight For Your Right (To Party)”. Oh my gosh you HAVE to! It was what we first heard from them and the mixture of rock and rap was so shocking back then. You couldn’t help but love it. You gotta do that one (and watch the video, too!).
With out a doubt the worst song they recorded. They were so put off by it that they never played it again after about 1988. They have so much more depth than that song. I sugget you watch the video for Fight for You Right Revisited full length about 20 minutes. It picks up where fight for you right ended with them leaving the party. There are at least 30 well known actors in it.

Beastie Boys "sabotage" live on the David Letterman show.... they play their own instruments, and there are more beasties than just the three MCs... also "Three MCS and one DJ" featuring Mix Master Mike, but it's got to be the video ...actually all of their videos are fly fresh dope and phat!
That's Kerry King from slayer on guitar. They are on the same label and we're using same studio as slayer and asked him to be on the song. He is in the video too

I was going to tell them they should check out Three MC’s and One DJ, and then direct them to a video where they ARE the band of musicians.
Rick Rubin helped create the Def Jam label with Russell Simmons from his college dorm in NYC. The first acts they signed were L.L. Cool J, Run-DMC, EPMD, Beastie Boys, and Public Enemy. Any one of those deserve a listen. All from NY: Queens County, Brooklyn, & Long Island.
I have to say Amber after watching your channel for so long & how much you mention your parents & the music they listened to, they sound awesome!!! You definitely got a taste of our music at an early age. ❤️

The "Fight for Your Right" video is hilarious, so much funny, and "Sabotage" is iconic!
The boys hated fight for your right. They said it pulled in the wrong type of ppl to like their shows. They wanted hardcore rap and end up with frat boys.
30 years and 100s of songs and Fight for Your Right to Party, while popular, is like, their in their bottom 10. Glad it got them on the map so they could really get into the cool stuff they did.
And I don't recommend Sabatoge for an intro to Beasties. It's better after knowing then a bit.

Rhymin & Stealin, She's Crafty, Posse in Effect, The New Style, Slow and Low...basically the whole album is absolutely fantastic!
You have to listen to Sabotage by Beastie Boys. But do the live, Letterman one. It really shows how talented these guys are, and is real high energy raw, dirty rock /rap. It gives me goosebumps every time.

Intergalactic is a must! I was in high school when this album dropped...changed everything.
I might be late to the party, but the Members of the band, MCA, mike d, and ad rock, played the instruments on most of their songs where they did not use sample. They were actually in the punk rock scene before they fell into the hip hop scene at local ney york joints. So they were well versed on the instruments to make their own backing tracks. Another fun fact, the Beastie Boys are the reason why we have the limits on sample usage today before you have to pay rights to the original creator. Their album Paul's Boutique is like 90% samples and is the last album able to be produced that way.

I was a sophomore in high school when this album came out. I grew up in a small beach town in Massachusetts. We had 400 kids in the school and I was 1 of 4 kids who listened to rap. I’d like to think we were ahead of the curve.

The Beastie Boys started out as a punk band. They changed to rap around three years later. In the 90s, they started rapping and playing their instruments. A lot of the rock-sounding 80s songs contain samples from classic hard rock songs. Kerry King, guitarist for the heavy metal band Slayer, played the guitar and the solos on this song. The Beastie Boys' producer for the License to Ill album, Rick Rubin, was also the producer for a lot of heavy metal bands, as well as another rap group, Run DMC. In the 90s, he started producing Red Hot Chili Peppers albums.

Beastie Boys were formed out of members of experimental hardcore punk band The Young Aborigines in 1978, with Diamond as vocalist, Jeremy Shatan on bass guitar, John Berry on guitar, and Kate Schellenbach on drums.[3] When Shatan left in 1981, Yauch replaced him on bass and the band changed their name to Beastie Boys. Berry left shortly thereafter and was replaced by Horovitz.
After achieving local success with the 1983 comedy hip hop single "Cooky Puss," Beastie Boys made a full transition to hip hop, and Schellenbach left. They toured with Madonna in 1985 and a year later released their debut album, Licensed to Ill (1986)
Around the 4:10 mark, he says that he's surprised this song didn't catch on. Haha. License to ill was the first rap album to ever hit #1 on the charts, and This song and the album it's from comer has gone on to become anthemic. this was played and sung along with at many parties across the world for decades! Kerry King of the metal band Slayer played the heavy guitar riffs here (borrowed from AC/DC) but the Beasties themselves were also musicians who originally were a hard rock/metal band. They often played instruments on stage during live gigs.

Hey I graduated in 1985 and myself and my friends played in a softball tourney as a fun time before we all split up. We came in 2nd which qualified us to go to a Worlds tourney in Minnesota. We came in 4th in the worlds tourney , getting to the point, but we were from Brook Park, heading home, partying in a RV, singing along with “ No Sleep til Brooklyn” But singing .... til Brook Park”.
The Beastie Boys started as a up and coming punk band with a big following and gave it up for rap in 1984 after releasing THE song COOKIEPUSS on vinyl which got tons of college radio play and night club banger

I hate that people think this album is the best of the Beastie Boys when they have 3 classics from the 90s. Check Your Head? Come on man. Ill Communication? Pfff.
I’m sure you’ve heard their song, “Sabotage”, before. But I encourage you to do a reaction to the 1994 David Letterman performance. It’s a great look at them playing at their instruments, and on a classic tune. Some like their MTV performance of the song better, but I think the Letterman show is a more classic visual. The camerawork (and lighting) on each member is also much better on the Letterman performance. And for what it’s worth, I think the performance itself is slightly better. Anyways, there’s a version posted by Porkys1982 which should suffice.
Also, technically the band started out as a punk band. Then they moved into more of a rap/rock sound with the release of this album. Paul’s Boutique was the next album, and that stands as one of the most sample-heavy albums of all time. There’s a 40+ minute video on TH-cam where they play all the samples on Paul’s Boutique, and then compare them to the original versions, it’s great. Check Your Head (1992) and Ill Communication (1994) were more hip-hop/sample/rock heavy, with a hint of the synth-style of their future release. The In Sounds From Way Out (1996) is a compilation of instrumentals taken mostly from their previous albums. It’s well worth checking out. Eventually they moved into more synth-based music with Hello Nasty (1998).

When the Beastie Boys started out in the early 80s in New York City they were actually a punk band. Obviously, hiphop was born in New York around the same time and they started getting into it. Towards the mid-80s they started moving towards hiphop. When they started playing shows around 1984 they hired a DJ named Rick Rubin…who got into producing and is now a legendary music producer. Rubin and Russell Simmons, both NYU students, started Def Jam Records from their dorm rooms. Rubin approached them about producing the Beasties for his new record label and the rest is kind of history. Another band that was signed to the Def Jam label was Slayer, and their guitarist Kerry King is the one playing guitar on this song. The Beastie Boys started in punk playing instruments, but by this point were only MC’ing. Shred guitar like that wasn’t their wheelhouse anyhow. About 5 years later, the Beasties would once again pick up their instruments and start playing their own music.
New York in the 80's was the epitome of that city. During that time Times Square was a shady place with hookers, rip-off pawn shops and street hustlers. Gotti was still running the streets and the art scene was crazy.
NY has been whitewashed and not as exciting since then...sigh.

The Beastie Boys became superstars on this album and especially because of "You Gotta Fight for your Right to Party" which also incorporates rock. So when I got this tape I was not surprised by this song. You need to react to "Sabotage"music video. It is a very cool video and a homage to the 70's/80's. I will not give it away more than that.
Another later gem from the Beastie Boys is "So Whatcha Want?" I love the Beastie Boys best when they incorporate rock in their hip hop.

If you define Hip-Hop as Rap infused with rock, soul and/or other musical genres, The Beastie Boys were one of the very first Hip-Hop artists.

They do all their own instruments,, seen them live several times.. one of the most incredible sounds I have heard was mca getting down on 1 knee playing the base cello at the garden ,, the speakers were approximately 1 story high and the sound in the garden echoes around prohetically ... cool experience and proud to have grown up with them ❤❤❤
Didn't catch on? This album and it's tracks were EVERYWHERE in '87, radio, MTV, boomboxes on the street. Everywhere. It's the Run-D.M.C. Rockbox formula but over an AC/DC style hook instead of something more like Prince
The idea of rap and rock makes me wish you guys would check out “I’m The Man” by Anthrax. Full on metal band that decided to take up the “rap and metal can’t mix” challenge with an awesome song as the result. And of course then make your way to their team up with Public Enemy for “Bring The Noise”. 👍🏻

Beastie Boys were at first a punk band. Then they took their queues from Run DMC and Slick Rick. Then when Nirvana hit, they went to a fuller sound with Sabotage, etc.

I was a die-hard metalhead when I was in my late teens in the early/mid '90s and I was pretty narrow minded about music back then. I remember the first time I heard Sabotage by the Beastie Boys in my local rock club. The whole club erupted into this huge mosh pit and it was amazing! That tune busted my ideas about music wide open.
When they played live, they would rap with just their mics and then they would pick up their instruments and play while singing/rapping. They were truly an amazing, genre busting group.
At least for this song they had Kerry King from Slayer on guitar.

Man, this and "Mony Mony" by Billy Idol blaring at parties back in the day. Guns N Roses, Motley Crue, ZZ Top...the music and the vibe at the time were just so perfect.
Not just that, but you could mix in other artists at the time, get a complete different vibe and it was still part of the 80's feel
(Like Cindy Lauper, Culture Club, Madonna).
Then you could hit up Run DMC, Kool Moe Dee and The Fat Boys and get yet another sound that was STILL 80's.
Mix these and every other combo I've failed to mention and it's suddenly clear how an era was magic.

I was 12 when this album came out. I'm 47 now, and I was STILL headbanging to the song while I watched your video!
I was in the 7th grade at Advent Lutheran Middle School in Boca Raton, FL, when I first heard this album. Small school, with about 30 kids per grade. And ALL of us white Christian kids went absolutely crazy for the Beastie Boys! This was at the beginning of MTV, and we all screamed, "You gotta fight....for your right....to PARTY!" along with the Beastie Boys when they came on. A few of us lip-synced "Brass Monkey" for that year's talent show, not having any clue in the world what the lyrics actually meant, and the principal immediately stood up afterwards and apologized to all the parents in the audience. LOL!
These three Jewish boys from Brooklyn led us into a whole new world, like Run-DMC, NWA, and any other rap albums we could find in our local suburban record store.
For rebellious pre-teens in middle-class predominantly-white neighborhoods in the 80's, the Beastie Boys were our gateway drug to music our parents, born in the late 40's, had no clue about. We really didn't know what we were rebelling against, but we knew we liked the feeling of rebelling.
Throw in Montley Crue, Twisted Sister, Metallica, Madonna, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Poison, Scorpion, Guns N' Roses, The Cure, Boy George......well, you can see how, in the 80's, our parents, who grew up on the Beatles and Elvis, thought we had thought our minds! LOL! But to their credit, they let us listen to whatever we wanted and only bothered us when the music emanating from our rooms got a bit too loud.
I was a high school DJ during that time, and we were hired by my old, Catholic elementary school to play at an 8th grade dance. I only had the dirty versions of the Beastie Boys songs, and I threw one on. Teachers and nuns in attendance and they were rockin' too. Then the line came up that said the D-word. DOH!!! I was surprised they didn't stop the party, and surprisingly enough they had me do another party after that. ;)

I was in high school in the 80's. We had the best fun music.
"(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)" was their most anthemic song incorporating rap with a hard rock bass beat, and nasty licks courtesy of a driving lead guitar. A must listen.
