These things haunted my nightmares as a kid. Even though I'd never seen one or known anyone who got stung by one, they had a sort of mythological significance in the minds of me and my friends who spent a lot of time in the local creeks and rivers.
Been stung by one of these, hit it twice-12 puncture wounds on the forearm and hand the pain was worst I have ever experienced. All the pain of a lifetime in 2 hours. Begged for my arm to be cut off. Respect!

Stood on one in the William's River when I was a kid.... never experienced pain like it since.... dreadful experience....
