    Amazing how times have changed. This was know as an economy car back in the day but barely averaged 15 mpg overall. My 2010 Prius that is 13 yrs old averages 52 mpg with power everything and a/c on most of the time as I live in south Florida

    The pacer only lasted 5 years. 75-79. The problem with AMC was they didn't have the money to build a modern front drive car. The 1983 Alliance was made by Renault.

      Not correct, it lasted six model years, 1975-1980.

      Didn't have the money to design a front drive car from scratch, but they built the Alliance in Kenosha.

    We did a documentary on the AMC Pacer a while back. I wish we would have know about this clip; we could have used it! Do you ever license footage from your TH-cam channel?

      Pacer is nice but ambassador is better.
      Btw pacer Frontend rips off 69 American.

    Look at the body of the pacer from the rear...it looks like a crossover on a car platform. So in essence everybody who drives an SUV is driving some form of an AMC Pacer in one way or another

    • @RoadCone411
      @RoadCone411 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That’s a ridiculous assertion. Now, if you compared them AMC Eagle (a few years later) to the modern car-based crossover SUV trend, that would be accurate.

    The looks didn't kill the Pacer. Its weight, poor gas mileage and poor performance did. Designing it for a rotary engine to be built by a competitor that never materialized didn't help either. All this plus the lack of capital to fund car designs and updates pretty much doomed this car and ultimately all of AMC which is really unfortunate.

    By the mid 1970s, Toyota and Datsun were becoming the gold standard for small, economical and durable cars. Did you ever do a comparison test or similar report depicting these impressive imports versus what Detroit was producing?

    • @thecardsaysmoops
      @thecardsaysmoops  ปีที่แล้ว

      I never did a straight comparison report, but certainly did test Toyota a Datsun cars. They were always superior.

  • @MrCarguy2

    10 years? They wanted to keep it until 1985!
    Shamefully AMC would resort Renault and later disappeared for the rest of the century

    • @RoadCone411
      @RoadCone411 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It barely last four years on the market - and even had a somewhat expensive facelift halfway through its lifespan. In some ways, the Pacer was ahead of its time but with that being said it was slow, not that pretty, got very hot in the summer, and wasn’t particularly roomy (in the back seat and trunk) or economical. But it’s looks are what kept most people out of the showroom.
