Thank you for this informative video. I have a tree in my yard that has been maturing and this year it is quite full of nuts and now I’m really excited to harvest them!
In Lewis County, I have a few of these trees. Thank you for the tip on when to harvest. Typically I let the squirrels harvest and I sample a few from each of the many storage spots that I have found. They are better at knowing when they are ripe than I have been in the past, but this year I will pick my own from your description of when to harvest. Thank you and the squirrels thank you as well.
Why are mine only 2' tall and I planted them bare root 4 yrs ago? and drying them out in the sun for 2 weeks won't the birds still get them? Been fertilizing mine once or twice a yr with fruit tree Fert. do you use something else?
I have a Chilean Hazel that I planted 2 years ago that has not grown at all - and it has irrigation, and I check it frequently! so I gave up and got 2 (slightly larger, 1 gallon) California Hazelnut last week. Hoping for nuts some day!
I planted 5 or 6 some years ago and they are huge. I have never harvested any nuts because the squirrels attack my trees like locust? Any advice? I live Seattle which is overrun by eastern gray squirrels.
At least 2, sometimes 3 depending on variety. They can be pruned however you like, but get 6 feet wide and about 10 feet tall. Wind pollinated so within the same airflow.
I just picked my American variety last week. 4:57 Some of my bunches had six or more nuts. I picked them just before the squirrels came.

Thanks so much for this info! I have a seven year old tree that is bearing heavily this year, so really needed to know what to do with it. Now I do! 🙂
Thank you Laura!
❤❤❤❤ thank sooo much for sharing videos ❤
So is harvesting the wild ones the same?Do they pop off the base if they are ready?
Wow it seems so early to harvest hazelnuts!!
It is! This video was taken last year.
Thank you for the video, I would love to see a tree, I'm from Evensville, Tennessee can I plant them here?
Do you sell the trees?

Sounds like you need a lot more nitrogen and possibly more water. Stunted trees are usually a difficulty establishing, which is usually water related.
its 4 ' from the lake i wouldn't think it needs water..
Apparently not! Good luck!

For the health of the tree, do you recommend growing hazelnuts as trees, of as shrubs like the one shown in the video?
Can it be planted in a tropical country?
No. They need chill hours.

That's a good question! Your most reliable option is probably pruning them back and netting or caging them.
I'd love a hazelnut tree but I don't have a ton of space in my yard. You need 2 for pollination, correct? What conditions/space do they need?

you will need two different varieties for pollination ,OSU extension has some good info.
I just picked one- it was definitely too early - not ripe - June 25
Hazel nuts!
