    I ordered hazelnut seedlings (5) last year from a famous nursery. I received 3 rooted cuttings 10 inches tall for $45. They grew a little then died. This spring I ordered seedlings from an Etsy vendor. I got 20 well rooted seedlings that are 24-36 inches tall for $30. They are all leafing out and are growing very well. The big difference between the companies is that the etsy vendor had pictures of their much bigger seedlings and guaranteed their product which the famous garden company did not.

    I have really lousy soil - fertile clay mixed with sandstone chunks with no organics in it. My town in western Kentucky sits on top of a huge aquifer. I get about 50 inches of rain/year and I am at USDA Zone 7. I think my drainage is ok due to the sandstone chunks. I have decided to stick to woody shrubs and trees to plant in my 0.6 acre lot. Hazelnut bushes (Winkler) appeal to me because I need something tough, hardy, that I do not have to dig a big hole to plant. I also am planning to plant elderberry bushes, dwarf service berry trees and a few pawpaw trees. My vegetable garden is going to be in pots and above ground planters. It is great to be able to see a video showing the stages of hazelnut shrub growth.
    There are a few cultivars of white oak that have acorns that are not bitter. The acorn meat is a complete protein. Most acorns, especially red oaks, need to be leached in several changes of water of a few weeks to get rid of the tannins.

      How have your hazelnut bushes been going after a few years?
      Are they comparable to the parent plant?
      What types?

      @@littletreefarmns Going lovely. The plants I selected from, were on a family homestead that was in our family for a very long time. I'm not sure if they were cultivar parents, but they produce huge crops and have a decent sized nut. We try and only grow the largest nuts, hopefully selecting for that trait, but who knows. we are doing really well with them and I don't anticipate a time where I replace my current hazels with named varieties!

    It's wonderful that you take us on a walk on your farm to show the hazelnuts! They're one of my favorites, I plan to plant as many as I can. I've read that they are very good to prevent erosion as well.
    Thank you for the inspiration and have a great day, Akiva!

    I think of them as Emergency Sustenance. When relatively mature - we prune ours to 8 feet tall, 10 ft diameter to keep everything in hand reach without ladders/tools) ... each individual plant will throw off more than a full day's calories for one person that can be gathered in about 10 minutes. We started out with 6 different varieties and propagated our own to about 150 on the property and several hundreds in surrounding land around the county. Assured food source.
    ALSO: Count on about 3 years storage. They'll start goin' wonky then ... and by year 5 you'll have near 100% garbage. Hardly "forever" ... but just about as good as it gets for free, easy, storage, nutritious calories with the diffuicult-to'-find-in-the-gardens fats & oils.
    We do mostly stool layering of "the good ones" and random seedlings from seed to mix genetics and try to find more "good ones".

    Great video and lovely hazel orchard. Where are you located? I'm in Canada in zone 5a in a heavy clay. Most of mine started bearing nuts in 6 years with a full bumper crop in year 8. I planted mine 10-12 feet apart. That gives me room to mow around each bush but allows the sun to fully illuminate each without shade. Thumbs up and a sub. Cheers!

      Squirrels get all mine, much better not to put all your nuts in one basket (so to speak) and have a variety of crops and styles as monocultures tend to invite disaster in my opinion. There is certainly an option for grazing or hay making between the rows to improve the fertility and maximise the potential of the land to produce food.

    Why not use a simple 2 gang moldboard plow to make the swales? I am using it to make mine and it goes way faster than using a front loader with less compaction in the surrounding area as well I would imagine

    I noticed for the first time this year that we have hazelnuts growing all throughout the forests where I am in BC. But you'll never see one single nut because the squirrels get every single one. I'd love to grow a row of them, but what would be the point with squirrels around?

    • @62avocado

      Mark Shepard of new forest farm harvest them before fully mature and dries them in his barn , then possess them. Plus he grows hundreds of thousands

      I have a lovely young (8 year) hazel orchard. Had a bumper crop with about 6 quarts per bush in 2021. Squirrels ate every last nut before they were even starting to ripen. This year I have a new dog and recipe book for hazel stuffed squirrel.

      @littletreefarmns 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Where did you get the seed?

    • @SgtSnausages
      @SgtSnausages ปีที่แล้ว

      To germinate we just bury a 5 gallon bucket full of soil, holes drilledfor drainage. Mix nuts throughout the soil. 3 or 4 inches of autumn leaves covering the buried bucket to keep from super deep freeze. Dig up mid March. About 1/3 will already have little root tails poking out. We pot those up and wait on the rest. They'll sprout in the next 4 or 5 weeks.
      Pretty much what we do for all nuts. Walnut. Hazel. Pecan. You name it.
      We first tried just burying without the bucket, but mice , voles, squirrels, Chipmunks will eat them.
      This keeps them in the ground, where Mother Nature intended germination to happen, subject to the necessary cold hours as well as the water cycle of natural rains.
      We do our fruit seeds this way, too.

      Yes, I've been caging most of them, since I've only planted about 7 so far. But I've germinated a bunch of seed this year, so I may have more hazel shrubs than I can protect once I plant them out. I may need a different method to protect them soon.
