    I do not always agree with your reviews but in this case I definitely have to thank you for bringing this little DAC-Amp to our attention. I own some of the gear you mention including the DT880/600 the Soncoz and since some days the Douk as well. Among other amps, I also own the "dangerous" A100 and the Beyer A20 but I am not using them for the DT880. I modded the DT880 balanced to drive it with my THX789 (and now with my new amp: the Topping A90) and I am very happy with it that way. Out of curiosity, I ordered the Douk and it is really surprisingly good. It has no issues driving the 880 and all my high impedance "vintage" cans (several AKGs/Beyers in the 600 Ohm range) and it sounds quite "rich". The DAC is a bit limiting the performance with its 48/44kHz and 16bit but it is perfectly OK for casual listening. The biggest surprise for me is that the Douk powers with ease my vintage Pioneer SE700 which is an extremely low-sensitivity piezo-electric headphone from the 70s for which I need the "jumpered" A100 to power it decently. If only the Douk wouldn't run so hot (really hot ! about 70 Centigrades), I would definitely recommend it as a must-buy for everyone to test it before getting any of the expensive gear for (very) high-impedance cans.

      it works, but how does DT880/600 compare A-100 vs A90 vs A20 vs Douk? I'm really curious abou this.

    I noticed you have an Audeze Deckard. I owned that and the magni 1 at the same time. I could never tell the difference with my LCD-2s, so I sent the Deckard back and still use the magni 1 to this day.

    Have you tried the DT880/600ohm on the Bellari tube amp? Their spec sheet is confusing -- to me at least -- saying headphone out impedance is "8 to 2000 ohms". I'm curious how the 880 works on that thing.
    Meanwhile, nice review. I can't see buying a Cayin (et al) for this particular headphone, either. More cheaper is way gooder!

    • @NoThemeReviews
      @NoThemeReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I asked Bellari about that specific question. I never got an answer I understood...something about providing constant resistance from 8 to 2000 ohms...aaaand I can't understand how that works. I don't remember if I tested on the Bellari, and I can't find any mention of whether I did or not in my notes.

    The inside of that thing looks an awful lot like my cMoyBB that surprisingly does a pretty great job of powering my DT880 600’s. Have you ever tried one of those with these headphones?
    Too bad there is no way to use another DAC with the Douk.
    I really think you are onto something here with regards to damping factor. I recently started trying the headphone out on a few receivers/integrated speaker amps I had around and one of the best amps I have ever found for these headphones is my Marantz SR8400/U1B (in my small amount of experience and not counting a WA7 fireflies I heard them on at a meet once). No idea what the impedence or power output are but I assume it may be in line with what you have found works well. It sounds completely otherworldly with that amp!
    Almost everything else I have tried with the DT880’s just sounds strained and with loose bass as you describe.
    Keep up the great work!!

    Funny to come across this video when earlier tonight I was just looking at audio gear on ebay and in ebay seller stores. I came across Douk's store and saw this little dac/amp combo with that giant heat sink on top and it peaked my interest. If it truly is a class A amp it's a very inexpensive way to experience that class A sound everyone is always going on about. It may not be the best out there but is a foot in the door so to speak. Thank you for the honest review, as always, and when I gather up some spare change for it's $60 asking price I may just get one for the heck of it...

    • @NoThemeReviews
      @NoThemeReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah you might hear a difference, though how much is totally dependent upon your music. I don’t think the 789 ever distorts sub bass, but it is loose. The Douk does distort a bit but I think has slightly tighter mid-bass. It could be 6 in one hand and half a dozen in the other.

      Yeah, Beyer's spec sheets are confusing, and they provide explanations in random places on their website. But Beyer says you should not exceed the rated power (100mw) for the headphones. I have many times used much more powerful amps with the 880; the problem is that at some point, the drivers will fail with excessive power input. If you haven't already, you should watch my video on the power requirement for the 880.

    • @NoThemeReviews
      @NoThemeReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Poor_Wayfaring_Stranger The T1 doesn't need high output impedance. It uses a different driver design than the DT880. The T1 merely requires sufficient power output from an amp. In my experience, it works great with anything that provides about 150-200mw at 600ohms. The T1 sounds fine with lower output, but doesn't perform at peak obviously--and you can tell the difference between when it is getting sufficient power, and when it isn't. Beyer's spec sheet says that the maximum power is 300mw; I've listened for any differences between an amp that has 150+mw vs 300+mw, and I can't notice much difference in this regard.
      Bottom line, if you're thinking of buying the T1, then an amp which provides a minimum of 150mw at 600 ohms should be considered.

      Any amp will do. It’s only the 600 ohm variant that has special requirements. For the 250ohm, any modern amp that can provide about 100mw into 250 ohms will be plenty.
