Yes and no, You can use an oil based primer, which I recommended, specially with light colors. But if oil based is not an option for you then use one coat of stix and one coat of Benjamin Moore Fresh Start. If there is still some bleeding you can spot prime that with an oil based aerosol can before your topcoat. The BM paint is a waterborne alkyd paint. is the Benjamin Moore alkyd a primer or paint? I went online to buy and it comes up as a primer. Is the Stix the primer? are you using 2 primers? I am confused. lol
I have and it's pretty good stuff! That's what we use a lot on trim. For cabinets I just like the advance sheen a bit more. Check out the other cabinet painting videos I have. I talk about some of my favorite products and what I like and dislike about them👍🏼

So I dont know which stain blocker primer to use. The house was built in 2007 with builder grade cabinets. Can you tell me which one to use if you dont know the wood? I know just the side is most likely laminate.
Use "zinsser Coverstain oil-based". You can't go wrong with that. Just let it dry overnight and you're good. Set up my latest video "painting oak kitchen cabinets "👍🏼
My kitchen island is almost the color you painted these cabinets. They are chipped. I want to paint them black. Do I need to prime them still? I know I need to sand still.
I want to paint my new Ikea cabinets from medium brown to chocolate brown. They're laminate with the "wood" texture. I'm debating between brush painting or can spray paint.
Try wet sanding them with 400 grit autobody sandpaper and water to get rid of the brush marks then repaint them using a mohair roller and paint extender to keep the paint wet longer. I might have to do a video on that.

Do you ever use grain filler on oak cabinets? Oak typically has a deeper grain. I want to make sure the grain will not appear after everything is finished.
We usually don't. Very rare that we get the request. But in those cases we use Bondo auto body filler then a oil- based primer such as ZINSSER Coverstain.
Hi there, how do you feel about the Kilz oil based primer? I have a full gallon left over from a previous project. Not sure if it would work well on cabinets? Thank you!!!
Sorry, one more question. My cabinet boxes are MDF covered with a picture of wood on the sides and bare underneath. I want to paint both the sides and the underneath. Would you use a different primer on those surfaces than coverstain and/or fresh start? Thanks again!
There are plastic anchors under my hinges where the screws hold the hinge to the door. Do I HAVE to remove them or can I paint around them since the hinge is going to cover this area. It is the type of hinge that is hidden. Thanks in advance!
Absolutely! If you prep them right you'll be able to print them. I suggest you always try on a back piece first. A drawer or door, or maybe the piece that's hidden by the fridge👍🏼. Check out the link on the pinned 📌 comment. I have a paragraph about laminate and fake wood in there.
Thank you so much for just getting to the point, so tired of all the extra stuff in videos. I have a hard time following along so thank you for just teaching us straight up 👏🏼

You can, just follow the instructions of the primer👍🏼
518 Painters thank you I just went to Lowe’s
Great video again! Any yellowing problems down the road, with BM Advance white?
Thank you!
I have a white bathroom vanity piece that's 5 years now with no yellowing. But it I guess it depends on your environment too.
I saw where you said we could get the information for obtaining the brushes in the description area but I could not find it.
is the Benjamin Moore alkyd a primer or paint? I went online to buy and it comes up as a primer. Is the Stix the primer? are you using 2 primers? I am confused. lol
Great, thanks you prep prep and prep is the key, thanks.
You're absolutely right! Prep is everything. Thank you 🤜🤛
Have you tried Scuff x instead of advance?
I have and it's pretty good stuff!
That's what we use a lot on trim.
For cabinets I just like the advance sheen a bit more. Check out the other cabinet painting videos I have. I talk about some of my favorite products and what I like and dislike about them👍🏼
Wow, looks pretty easy. Gonna give it a shot - I’ll let you know how it went.
Definitely let me know how it goes and reach out of you have any questions!
I was wondering why all the comments & then....ohhhhhh
What if there are chips in the doors? Are there wood fillers that I can use and paint over?
3M Spot and Glazing Putty in a tube works great. It's a red fast drying putty that's paintable.
Thank you so much. I'm just about to paint my cabinets. I looked at you step by step list and cant figure out if I have oak cabinets or hickory cabinets? So I dont know which stain blocker primer to use. The house was built in 2007 with builder grade cabinets. Can you tell me which one to use if you dont know the wood? I know just the side is most likely laminate.
Use "zinsser Coverstain oil-based". You can't go wrong with that. Just let it dry overnight and you're good. Set up my latest video "painting oak kitchen cabinets "👍🏼
My kitchen island is almost the color you painted these cabinets. They are chipped. I want to paint them black. Do I need to prime them still? I know I need to sand still.
If they've been painted before, then you should be good to just clean, scuff, and paint. Always test small area first
@@DIYhomeimprovementguy thanks for responding. I’ll let you know how they turn out.
I want to paint my new Ikea cabinets from medium brown to chocolate brown. They're laminate with the "wood" texture. I'm debating between brush painting or can spray paint.
Never use aerosol spray cans! Brush and roll or invest in a budget friendly hand-held sprayer
Great video...trying to learn you make it look easy bro
Thank you! You'll get it, just trust the process bro!
How many coats of primer and how many coats of paint? I am using Ben Moore Advance Satin. Thanks in advance. 🇵🇷 los mejores 💪🏼🏝
1 coat primer and 2 paint is usually enough. Keep me posted on how it turns out! Gracias 🇵🇷💪🏽
518 Painters gracias, will do in a couple months. Veremos a ver como me va jaja
I’m trying to repaint my cabinets . The same color I have .because the guy that did my kitchen left brush strokes on them. Any tips that?
Try wet sanding them with 400 grit autobody sandpaper and water to get rid of the brush marks then repaint them using a mohair roller and paint extender to keep the paint wet longer. I might have to do a video on that.
Alright thank you bro I really appreciate that. Me and my wife are bout to try n do this little home project lol. 👍🏽👍🏽Just subscribed 👍🏽👍🏽 so I’ll be looking out for that video if u end up making it.
No problem and thank you! You won't need a primer if they're already painted. You can download my free guide that's pinned to the top of the comment section. @@Jram1292
Can or do you suggest the same, for the inside of the Cabinets ?
Absolutely. If you can I would use an oil base primer on the inside. Just to give it that extra durability.
What do we do with Nick's and holes or damage in the Finish?
Use a product called "Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty". It comes in a tube and dries fast. Super easy to use.
Will this same process work for cabinets with a laminate over lay?
Yes it will. You can download a free guide that explains the process of painting laminate cabinets as well here www.518painters.com/how-to-paint-kitchen-cabinets/
Nice video Juan. I think it is going to help me a lot. Stix makes a cabinet paint as well as a primer, so I was just curious why you do not use that?
Thanks for watching!
Stix cabinet coat is good as long as you're using white. Darker based colors have flashing issues amongst other things I've noticed. Until that's fixed I'll stick with BM Advance, Ppg breakdown and Evo WB.
@@DIYhomeimprovementguy Ahh, OK, thanks.
Any time!@@ghazman6141
Awesome video Juan, you make it look so easy.....Can't wait to start on my cabinets..
Thank you
Thank you!
Let me know how they turn out please!
I want to paint over my existing cupboards but they're not wood can I do that
You can, you just have to use a high bond alkyd primer 👍
What would you suggest for going from black to grey?
Is the previous paint holding up and you just want to change colors?
@@DIYhomeimprovementguy yes it is.
Then just clean it and de-grease it rally good, light scuff with 220 sandpaper then paint. Try a drawer front first. Always test first👍🏽@@mykvillegas11
@@DIYhomeimprovementguy thank you.
@@mykvillegas11 no problem! If there's anything I can help you with just let me know!
Does stix need to be sanded before top coat?
I would always lightly sand to get the best finish. But to answer your question, no
@@DIYhomeimprovementguy
Thanks a lot
Do you recommend BIN primer?
Yes, but I would recommend Zinsser Coverstain over BIN. Check out my most recent video to see why👍🏼
How long did everything take you? How much would this job cost?
3 full days for this. You can charge $100 per door plus $50 per drawer on average.
I really got lost of great information. I'm subscribing now.
Thank you, I'm glad it helped!
When I did the scratch test with the primer it did scratch what does that mean?? The man that help me at the paint store said to put the prime first then sand it with 320 is that ok?? Thank you.
What primer did you use and how long did you let it dry?
518 Painters i used insl-x waterborne bonding primer. It’s been more than 24 hours I believe.
Can you email me at 518paintersny@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram @518painters, I'll be able to see your messages sooner and respond. Thank you@@Denizvilla
Any chance show the clear coat job?
What primer should I use? and can I find it at home depot?
What type of wood is it, Oak?
@@DIYhomeimprovementguy looks like Alder or maple.
Its a light smooth consistency.
@@liztapia516 if you don't mind an oil-based primer then ger ZINSSER COVERSTAIN which you can get at Home depot. Send me an email and I'll send you a product list and guide.

I'm glad I came across this channel. I plan on painting my cabinets. Thank you
Thank you!
Nicely done. Your video was simple and easy to follow with some great tips. Great job! I can't wait to do my cabinets. Kudos!
Thanks for the comment! Let me know how it turns out!
Thank you for this, brother! Going to give it a try!
You got this! Make sure you download the free guide I put in the description.
@@DIYhomeimprovementguy I definitely will - thank you! 🙏🏽
Can you show how to paint a peeling cement stucco old house for beginners
I will try to make a video for you as soon as the weather allows for exterior work 👍🏼
Thanks for the tips. Would it work on laminated cabinets? Or do you need a special product for that?
Definitely would if you prep right and use the Stix primer. I've done a ton like that. Read the pinned comment and go check out the free guide. It has a Laminate cabinet section.
Great video. Would you recommend using a wood trainer filler for a different style finish?
Thank you!
If you're willing to put in the extra work then I would suggest bondo wood filler. It'll help smooth the surface. Just be aware that it's a lot of added work.
Thanks for the advice. I am going to start the project today. I must have watched 100 videos. So glad i stumbled onto your page. I'll end up watching all your videos and not doing my kitchen cabinets now 🤣
@@selinabadhan272 😆 I hope I didn't deter you from doing it . What kind of cabinets do you have? Oak?
Haha nearly. I watched a few videos this morning.i think I will end up washing and sanding today as it's taking hours to get my door handles off... they are nailed in really well 😁 Priming tomorrow 🎨
Awesome! Keep me updated please@@selinabadhan272
Kilz works great for cabinets!👍🏼
Sorry, one more question. My cabinet boxes are MDF covered with a picture of wood on the sides and bare underneath. I want to paint both the sides and the underneath. Would you use a different primer on those surfaces than coverstain and/or fresh start? Thanks again!
I would use the Stix primer for that.
Thanks for the info and quick response! I'm subscribed.
Thank you!@@vitex1231 I'm here if you need anything.
There are plastic anchors under my hinges where the screws hold the hinge to the door. Do I HAVE to remove them or can I paint around them since the hinge is going to cover this area. It is the type of hinge that is hidden. Thanks in advance!
You could paint around but I wouldn't paint over it. Personally, I would remove everything that's removable. 🙂
Thank you for this tutorial. I appreciate the time and effort you put into this and this was helpful to me.
Thank you for watching!!
My cabinet aren't real wood, would this still work??
Thank You
Absolutely! If you prep them right you'll be able to print them. I suggest you always try on a back piece first. A drawer or door, or maybe the piece that's hidden by the fridge👍🏼. Check out the link on the pinned 📌 comment. I have a paragraph about laminate and fake wood in there.
Can you use the same concepts on Cherry cabinets?
What primer did you use?
What type of wood are your cabinets, oak?
Thank you so much for just getting to the point, so tired of all the extra stuff in videos. I have a hard time following along so thank you for just teaching us straight up 👏🏼
😅 I try to keep out the fluff and get right to it. Thanks for acknowledging that and thanks for watching!
Nice job! Finished projects looks awesome! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
Mr. Juan, can you use a deglosser instead of sand paper to create a bite for the paint sir?
Good question but No sir. It will create a chemical bond instead which is not a good as a mechanical bond that you get from the bite.
@@DIYhomeimprovementguy Thank you sir! I will follow your advice then. Take care, God bless!
Let me know how it goes!@@neotrinity3155
How is the primer applied? same as the paint?
If your cabinets are already painted do you have to remove the old paint first or can you just use a primer?
You only have to clean them with a degreaser then you can paint over them. Try a small section first and let it dry over night. If the paint dosen't peel you can paint without priming👍🏼
Great Thank you!!
No problem!@@brendab4761
