Harley Manuel Chain Tensioner? Or Hayden Automatic Adjuster?

  • Lots of talk about Compensator and Primary Chain Tensioner issues...here's my 2 cents worth. This is a 2007 Ultra with just about 90,000 miles on it. Up until now, I have only used only OEM replacement parts. In 2024, you can't even buy an original OEM HD Auto Adjuster. With all the bad reputation that the HD Auto Adjuster has gotten itself, it seems HD just quit making it and instead started making a look alike manual adjuster. So, I buy one and take the whole day in my garage to install it, after all, I have all the tools to do it myself from when I changed the drive belt years ago. The HD Manual Adjuster is crap. IT seems to work fine...BUT, it's so noisy, I just don't want to ride the bike. If all that noise were exhaust notes that'd be fine too, but it just rattles. It Whirr's, it tinkles, it ticks, it rattles, it just makes a too much noise, and the problem with this noise is that is just sounds inevitably like it's going to explode. It was so bad, and I was so tired of working on the bike after new tires, brake rotors, pads, engine mount...etc...plus all the un-needed ignition component's, and the 4300 I paid HD to find a ignition relay that had gotten weak. I trouble shot the no start two years ago when the compensator went south. The bike is so old now, that it seems like it is costing a lot of money to maintain it. I just wanna ride...Well, it shouldn't cost this much to ride, I think maybe I squeezed one or two extra seasons out of the rotors and compensator...it had been acting up for quite a few years. The OEM compensator from Hd prolly never should have gone bad to begin with but go tell that to HD. Long story shorter, the Hayden Tensioner works great with just a minimal amount of "Whirr." .k

Well I've been having the same problem. I switched to the screaming eagle manual chain adjuster. Ever since I've been going back and forth trying to get the noise to go away. Haven't put m many miles since I did the tensioner. I wonder if it not will go away after some time.
