      I think that since no one got my input nor consent on where the bar for decency and self-respect should be, I don't feel I need to participate in upholding it. I run my body how I please so I expect no different from others. To Lizzo: Flaunt away. No one asked you what you wanted for your life so you don't owe them anything.

      I can relate to seeing a bigger lady feel comfortable in her skin-particularly when she is in the public eye. I've been at the higher end of straight sizes a majority of my life, and I'm only now (in my 40s) coming to grips with the fact that its okay for me to be sexy and big and healthy and happy in my skin. I don't have to look like those "skinny b!$@&" to be happy. I don't have to cover up when I go surfing because my "fat" is unsightly (trust me-this is a thing). I can be flaunting in my own way and seeing someone else do this gives me power to free myself from the self-imposed and external thought prisons. Great video!

      @@Neo.Jordon The bar should be in a place that does not physically nor socially hinder another from enacting their own brand of self-respect. This will require more work from us in actually getting to know a person and discovering how they see themselves; but so what? What else are we doing that we can't take that time? There are no one-size fits all answers. If we want to know whether or not Lizzo respects herself, we're going to have to learn it from her, not our own ideals. There is ONE thing that bothers the hell out of me about a good portion of “fat acceptance” supporters, and it’s that they will only see someone for their size, and take all criticism about them outside of that and say it’s due to fat phobia. Kind of like the whole “you can’t criticize x because they’re in x minority group.” When someone criticizes me, I want it to be based on my work or my actions, not the fact that I’m a black gay woman (this is an extremely reductive example). I’m sure that Lizzo doesn’t want people to only see her for being a large black woman. People keep putting her and other large women into these boxes and calling it “fat acceptance” I can’t stand it. It feels disingenuous as fuck.

      You're right. She triggers our innate psychological dislike of fat people. It's a biological trigger from the times where one person's overindulgence in food meant others would starve cuz there wasn't enough to go around. It is biologically coded in us just like we take beauty as a sign of good genes.

    I've been an (Australian) size 8, and I'm now a size 22. When I was thin, it was because I was dealing with serious depression and disordered eating. No one ever thought I was unhealthy then. Now, I'm happier than I've ever been; I'm mentally healthy for the first time in my whole damn life. And yet I can't even go and visit my own mother because every time I see her, she asks why I'm "still fat". I get looks in the street. I've been turned down for jobs that I was well qualified for. This world is openly hostile to fatness, not to mention how a lot of health professionals handle it. It fucking sucks. You know what doesn't suck? Seeing Lizzo shake her fat ass up on stage in front of thousands of people and being successful despite the naysayers. I hope one day we can disassociate the perception of "health" from weight and body shape, because these notions are outdated, harmful and ridiculous

    Self-objectification is a weird concept because if Lizzo is objectifying her body, she is still doing it as a person who has agency and the ability to make that choice. If her body becomes an object, then she (as the person) is sharing enjoyment of an object (her body) that she possesses. It gets into a weird field of separation vs. unity of person and body. I think, when someone flaunts in such a way as to be easily objectified, the audience who objectifies along with them feels like they're in on it and feel less bad about it as a result. And feeling "in on it" means there's someone telling it in the first place, which can have this roundabout effect of de-objectifying the self. IDK I'm rambling

      I feel you. There is no simple answer. If we lived in a healthier society where viewing ppl as objects wasn't a thing, clutching our pearls over skin and/or different sized bodies wouldn't be a thing either. There is only outrage and questions because of the constructed idea of "self-respect", and that it can only present in a very specific way.

    • @theone-eyedwitch900
      @theone-eyedwitch900 3 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      Ok so here’s my piece on it: why do we favor objectification over subjects? Can you not be a sexual subject? Can you not enjoy your sexuality as a whole complex person? Even if you are focusing on the body, can it not be done as an individual with agency?

    • @mynameisuju
      @mynameisuju 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@theone-eyedwitch900 this! because i agree with OP, but at the same time how limiting is it that we only ever relate our sexuality through objectification, even when we are the ones doing it. Like even that process makes it de-objectified sure. But why is the starting point objectification? Why is being an object the neutral, even when you as the subject is inherently subjective

    • @theone-eyedwitch900
      @theone-eyedwitch900 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @3g0st to me, it seems like we’ve distanced ourselves so much from sexuality that we have a disconnected perspective of it. Like we have our personality and our sense of self, and then we also have our sexual self, and the idea of keeping them separate is actually seen as desirable, for example good girl is secretly freaky (the way it’s treated like an alter ego or something repressed) and objectifying promiscuous people, when in actuality it’s just different contexts of the same self. You can be a slut and a person, you can be wholesome and kind and also freaky as one complete person. these things are treated as discordant and incapable of coexisting in one complete being because 1) we do not view sex as a natural part of life (for allos), but as a Secret 2) we see it as something that someone does to someone else as opposed to a social activity between two people

    When you're fat, even doctor's don't really look at your health. Despie cholesterol, BPM, or blood pressure a doctor will tell you to lose weight if you're over that straight size. There are doctors who refuse to run tests or listen to the physical complaints of fat people because they are so focused on the person's weight. I can't tell you how many plus size individuals have had me file complaints against doctors for ignoring what they came in for and spent a whole appointment talking about weight instead of the person's condition or pain. It can be incredibly disheartening and completely destroys the relationship between doctors and patients. A lot of times the doctors telling them to lose weight won't even give information on how to do so in a healthy manner. There's never discussions about healthy eating, what it looks like, or what exercises to try. Doctors don't seem interested in improving the health of a person who is plus sized so much as they want everyone to fit into the straight size or a 'healthy BMI' - which we all know isn't a measure of health in any way.

    • @brennam954
      @brennam954 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The other unfortunate reality is that a lot of fat people will choose to not see a doctor for years because they know they won't get treated but just get lectured and talked down to and any health issue blamed on their weight. I mean, why would you subject yourself to that if you know you won't get help, you'll be stressed like crazy up to and during the appointment, and then you are going to get charged extra (copay) for the useless lecturing?

      This! I'm a healthcare practitioner and I learned in school how studies show that active, obese individuals have a lower mortality rate than inactive people of an "average" size. Lizzo's amazing endurance and breath control is a testament to the fact that it's completely possible to be healthy and fat. Some people just naturally carry more weight on their bodies. It's much more detrimental to the body to go up and down in weight ("yo-yoing") than to just stay fat, and that's been proven time and time again.
      The most dangerous thing to fat people's health is actually the stigma that's rooted in our entire culture, including the healthcare industry.

She chose those boots, he chose that shirt, she chose to wear a dress with an incredibly bold pattern that someone else might feel intimidated by, he chose to buy and wear that blazer that's not just another practically invisible suit, and I definitely make choices I like to be complimented on. But my hair colour? It's obviously natural, and I'm glad you like it but ... whose choices exactly are you complimenting? If it were obviously a vivid choice, I'd feel differently. And don't compliment someone's body via their clothing. I don't understand why this is difficult, and I see inappropriate "compliments" about bodies all the time in youtube videos that horrify me, particularly when someone female has a good platform.

It becomes more of a problem when certain types of people are always complimented primarily on their bodies when there's more going on, particularly if they're women, and TH-cam is a great example of that. But if you get into the mindset of looking at people making the choices that almost all people can make, and some succeeding quite well, magically one may find that one is no longer limited to complimenting people of their sexual preference who have "ideal bodies", particularly of "conventionally attractive" and usually thin women by straight men. Considering choices almost everyone can make humanizes people.

    Wonderful video! Also, regarding you point about health and fatness, I always get very tired of the word "unhealthy" being used to remove a person's worth. The amount of times I have heard that word being used to justify horrid words and really harmful ideas being pressed upon fat people is so disgusting. Let's say every fat person is unhealthy, let's say you can see that from the outside. Do they not deserve love? Do they not deserve respect, or just being treated like a human being? Having been fat my whole life, I have learned to dehumanize myself before anyone else has the opportunity to do it. There comes a point where you truly belive you are not human, that you do not deserve to feel happy because you committed the unforgivable sin of being big, being fat. Punishing people for things that are often outside of their control has always been despicable, and I'm so happy to see people like Lizzo being unapologetically herself. Of course, looking at any comment under her ig posts or tiktok can ruin my entire day, but it really does help seeing a big woman acting like a person, as it reminds me that I also am one (regardless of how weird that sounds). You ask why people get upset and I know a bit about that, I'm pursuing fat studies as part of a Gender Studies degree and I make videos about fat activism. To get a sense of the why it's worth checking out Foucault's discussion of Biopolitics (if you haven't already). It's also worth checking out Monster Theory, specifically Jack Halberstam's work. It all goes back to the objectification thing, culture uses supposedly undisciplined bodies to frighten the majority into disciplining themselves and being compliant. The hegemony needs people to see us miserable so they will be good girls and keep trying to shrink themselves. If fat people refuse to be miserable then we deny them that. For Lizzo to do that while racialized Black, well that's powerful.

    Personally, I hate when people view embracing their own sexuality as "self objectification". I know a lot of people like to use the term as a way to take back that power; but it doesn't work in my opinion. By definition any sort of objectification is to view or compare said subject to an object; and I don't think its healthy for anyone to do that. Especially if they're doing it to themselves. Lizzo or any person who decides to flaunt their body isn't looking to be compared to a tool to be used, so it's unfair for people to label what she does as her "objectifying herself" and it's even worse to assume that doing that on purpose. What it is, is she loves herself and her sexuality to a point where she's confident in showing it, and people like to use her love of herself as a weapon against her.

      there definitely is a way to be sexy while maintaining agency (coming from a heteronormative person). But it comes from others for the most part. You cant change how other people react to you. Thats for them to decide for themselves. so we have to change the culture around personal agency, sex, and sexuality. Its very hard for me to think about respecting other's sexual expression and personhood without not also thinking about gender equality, gender expression, and in general women fighting for perceived personhood. Which are things that have been a long time coming as it is. I think sexuality with respect to agency will be a byproduct of the things I've just mentioned being achieved rather than something that can be tackled alone. I think its a symptom to much bigger problems yet presents its own unique set of problems that grants itself enoigh visibility that its perceived as an isolated problem, which I dont believe it to be.

It's been about 5 years and I still have family members commenting about that weight loss as if it were a good thing. My body fat percentage was actually much higher when I lost the weight. I was jello.

      Yep, I'm slim and I work out...I still reckon Lizzo is technically fitter than I am - she certainly has more stamina!
      I agree about the commenting too...my dad used to comment every time he saw me at university that's I'd lost weight, knowing full well that I was clinically depressed and living on a shitty student budget, while also walking MILES AND MILES around Edinburgh every day. Like yes dad, my body changed because my circumstances changed and because I can just barely afford the time or energy to look after myself. I am bigger now, but MUCH healthier!

    Huge fan of your channel! 😊 I’m an MD (Psych). I think it’s important to note that fitness does not equal health. For example, a professional athlete who takes steroids every other day is fit, but if you were to look inside their bodies, it would become very apparent that they are not healthy. Lizzo’s stamina alone wouldn’t be an indicator about her true health. It’s also worth saying that she’s still pretty young, so complications associated with her size are still compounding, and will begin to really show themselves once she gets closer to her late 30s. The fat acceptance/body positive movement used to be about making it known that size does not dictate your worth, and that beauty can be found in all sizes-I agree with and support this 100%. Unfortunately, a subset of this movement has spawned into the Health At Every Size movement-that is where the danger lies. It is frightening that people who are obese/morbidly obese are being told (and believe) that they can be truly healthy at their size. The obesity pandemic in the U.S. has only worsened since these movements, and the percentage of deaths from complications related to obesity has skyrocketed. I am truly fearful of where we’ll be just 5 years from now.

      I have read the book “health at every size” by Linda bacon which is foundational. She does not claim that it is healthy to be extremely fat or extremely thin. Her insight, which is very fair, is that doctors (like herself) can do more good by accepting that the ‘war on obesity’ is lost than they can by fighting it. That trying to help people make an effort to take care of their health, no matter what size they are, is a more functional and healthier approach to public health. Some people might claim that health at every size is about how any size of person is healthy unless they are proven otherwise, but online you can find someone to make any claim you want.

    I really love these videos, Lizzo has been an amazing inspiration for me and I’m glad to see a Khadija video on her. Also, and I get that this is something people won’t like, but I wanted to add that personally, as a 5’5” person who currently weighs over 200 lbs (250lbs last year), has almost 40% body fat, and has been constantly in pain for years because of being overweight (gall bladder issues, autoimmune disease acting up, joint injuries, and serious energy level problems)… I don’t think it’s necessary to negate that being overweight is a health issue to accept that everyone is beautiful, valuable, and sexy if they want to be regardless of size. I really, truly wish people could embrace these two points dialectically… and were able to say being fat should not be seen as a moral, aesthetic, or social stigma and at the same time being overweight is often a health problem, especially depending on body composition. Accepting the rise in obesity as a public health problem related to the consumerism, overwork, lack of being able to self care, and lack of quality healing food under extreme capitalism is an important conversation that I wish was focused on more without devaluing overweight and obese people (or reacting as if talking about those issues is doing that).

It's become harder and harder to find things that fit me or even if they do, are flattering. I'm lucky there are plus sized brands and a lot more brands are stocking plus sized clothing. I think the definition for 'straight sized' needs to be adaptable to wherever its being applied.

Although she's 1% and has access to the best doctors and nutritionists so I really could care less about Lizzo as a person. It's not my business but the hate she gets is absurd in my opinion.
    I personally have a huge problem with performative activists of social media that praise obesity in others (usually black women of late) but would not live a similar lifestyle. When you have non-black folks who are not obese or in shape praising black women for being obese... it's kind of a form of benevolent racism. It's like they say "obesity is a good look on you, but I wouldn't wear it well." I don't really think you addressed
    Auntie always hitting that nuance. A person's weight isn't the only signifier of health. Mike Tyson in his prime according to the BMI would be obese....

    I find it very odd that people are so fixated on Lizzo's health and just fat people's health in general. Setting aside that you literally can't determine the state of someone's health based on how they look, I really don't think it matters whether they are healthy or not. Healthy and unhealthy is such a false binary. Health is not a marker of morality and you do not owe the world health. So if we're judging people based on how healthy we perceive them to be, what does that say about us as a society? Health can mean different things for different people. Regardless, Lizzo or anyone else doesn't have to be healthy in order to be happy and to live their lives they way they want.

      This conversation isn’t just discussing health though, it’s discussing health in regards to beauty standards and that is important to establish. This new movement is asking people to accept something unhealthy as beautiful. The same way that so many were outraged in the 90s when underweight waif bodies were deemed a beauty standard worth obtaining, people are now outraged by this current movement trying to claim that obesity can be a beauty standard. That is problematic. The discussion needs to change it’s course…if this movement simply said that we should all cherish and love ourselves regardless of our weight and nobody should be bashed for being fat aaaand that being thin doesn’t mean you’re healthy then there wouldn’t be an issue. Instead, what is happening is that this idea that people like Tess Holiday are healthy is being shoved down the throats of logical, intelligent, rational people and they’re saying nope. Any person who is obese has health issues and is therefore unhealthy, period. They can be active and eat well…but something caused that significant weight gain whether it be thyroid issues or gut issues or medication-led weight gain…all of these are health issues. If folks simply discussed this with rationale instead of trying to make everything PC then there wouldn’t be so many arguments.

      That’s all good and dandy, but health is real. Lizzo is obese. The same people who say it’s no one’s business what size Lizzo is are the same ones who will cry that she died young due to health complications related to obesity. How anyone can honestly look at someone like Lizzo and not be concerned is beyond me. She does have a right to be the size she wants and shouldn’t be put down for it, but we shouldn’t act like concerns for obesity have no merit.
