- This custom mandolin is being built as a surprise gift for a very lucky Father-in-law. I am extremely proud of this mandolin. It is the first mandolin that I have used real wood binding. In fact, the binding is from a Sycamore tree that grew on my farm.

You got me addicted to watching a true Master Craftsman. As a life long (since 7th grade wood shop), saw dust eater, Carpenter, Furniture maker, woodworker I'm in awe at watching.
Well we're watching you build another one as I'm practicing!!!!;
Yay!!! Maine represent!!! Come back to visit Jerry!!!!
Amazing workmanship as always Jerry!!!
your a great mandolin maker God Bless .
Great work Jerry.
Can't wait to see part 2.
Thanks for posting.
A lot of carving is completed, more to come. There is not much room for mistakes when using the hammer - and the like, on a big chisel. Good job!
I always love watching Jerry carve mandolin tops and bottoms, very satisfying.
Congratulations on 50K subscribers!
Fantastic video great to watch thanks to Mel for her input to great
I am convinced that nobody on the planet knows anymore about wood and building a mandolin than you Jerry.
yours sounded like a Tamborine or a drum, the other sounded dead! nice to see Mellisa, we appreciate your efforts on Gerry`s posts, thankyou, you (& Gerry) are keeping me sane during my first pandemic! (hope it`s my last)!
Great stuff Jerry 👍😊 I can't wait for part two. I'm loving the tunes in the background as well. I am really starting to appreciate all the different instruments in your band. 🌾🤗🐝
You're looking well and rested, Jerry. Nice to see.
A real master class in instrument building. Thanks, Jerry.
Always love watching a Rosa anything come to life!! Thx Doc!
Wonderful work sir, in the presents of a master!
Love watching you work miracles with wood...Way to go.
You DO get the prettiest wood! Love BOTH backs, they are spectacular. Can't wait to hear and see the final product, it will no doubt be exceptional.
So excited. I love a new build....shows off your skill as a master craftsman. Yay
Things are never easy for a perfectionist craftsman. But the final product is truly remarkable.
it' always a big pleasure to watch your work - love your mandos - greetings from Switzerland
Impressive! Hand carved mandolin! I could hear the ring of the top.Bright..Standing by for next lesson.
6 video's in 1 part and still engrossing to watch and still i understood everything, what a wonderful build video showing wonderful craftmanship, another brilliant video keep them coming Jerry
Jerry, thanks for sharing another great insight into your world. Great content as always.
My dad used to save a LOT of stuff that he would never use, with the statement "it might come in handy one of these days."
It looks like another Rosa mandolin is about to be born into the world!
Wonderful start !
You are one of a kind! We need more like you to teach the younger generation what they are missing! Why they ever stopped teaching wood working in schools is lost on me! As you well know there is nothing like the feeling of pride and satisfaction you can get by making something with your own hands, and I believe it’s that same feeling that makes you want to do it better the next time until you have it perfected. I have my own wood shop and once professionally was one of the larger sauna makers in the Western Hemisphere. I can appreciate fully what you do. I never could allow my business to grow so large that I took me off the assembly line. I loved what I did and never went to work. Thank you for your contribution to society! Maybe you could help me. Where do you get your finger planes? I’ve been looking for some for years?
I used the ibex planes and their the round bottom planes if you can't find them anywhere else you can get them from stew Mac
I love this build. Excellent video as always Jerry
I love the hording of the wood. "mother nature took hundreds of years to grow it". If only everyone appreciated the resources they're expending.
Well done and am awaiting the further adventure...
I must have been simply great to watch his mandolin being made!
Great to hear another version of your opening theme!
I plan to build a les paul type guitar soon. I’m just happy I won’t have to carve the back side there.
Pleasure to watch your job as always, Jerry, and i hope your hands get better soon
somehow I missed this 1 ,your mandolin top sounds amazing !!!
I would love to play well enough to justify buying one of your excellent mandolins
At 33 minutes and 14 seconds I hear that wonderful sound.
It is there DeFacto yes sir.
SO delicious!! I can’t wait for the second course. Anyone in these threads please help a guy out... I have to go wood pickin - Like Jerry, I have to see, touch, and hear it before bringing it home. I’m in Jersey needing a quality wood supplier for instruments. (Who is open!) Help a vet out please? 🙏 Thank you! And thank you to Jerry most of all!
Now this is fascinating to watch this taking shape Jerry:)
Cannot wait I learn so much!
You Sir Are Amazing !!! I have watch A lot of your builds and this one might be one of your best!!! I watch on my phone by the way and you can hear the note the top was making and the length of it !!! As I have said many times before if the God Lord Sees fit I will play one of your Masterpieces on day !!! God Bless and you and your family stay Healthy!!!
Number one for me!
14 Downvotes??? I'm totally Confused... 🤔 Great Job Jerry...👍👍👍 the only thing I can think of is, the Green-eyed 👀 Monster...Total Jealousy... 🤢
Jerry: I have good speakers on my computer and I can clearly hear the resonance on that top. Great job!!!
I can’t believe your patience - 10 hours of finger planing, wow
Like #200!
Thanks for the video!
Try those fingerless gloves for sewing. Yes sewing they'll help you out with the finger planning.
I watched the Ratliff repair and saw the comment about what it cost. You still had to "finish it" for them, I could safely say...I don"t know what you charge for a custom build, but IT AIN"T ENOUGH! I want to add that I have studio quality headphones and the quality of sound is exactly as you describe it.
FYI Newfoundland is an island about 90 miles east of mainland Canad. You can get there by car ferry and or fly in. I have no idea where the village you mentioned is but I was stationed at Earnest Harmon AFB Newfoundland for a couple of years. The base is closed and it was taken over by civilians and is commercial air terminal now. Jack Tennant, Ocean Springs Miss.
Man, can't help wonder what you charge to make such a magnificent family air loom....you are amazing, love your channel, thank you for the content. I am into saw mills now, much to my wife chagrin. Lol
Fantastic as always, I would love to see you make a Rosa electric guitar, maybe show Gibson how things should be done these days in craftmanship and finishing things properly.
Amazing how fine human motor skills are, and how they adjust to the images from the microscope.
congrats on over 50k subs
I am 83 years old an have taken vitamin B 6 for arthritis and it helps a lot. Try it one a day and it takes a few weeks to see an improvement.
I've heard quite a few of your songs and I definitely have to say that Mandolin Wine is my favorite to date. Speaking of songs, that top sure was singing a sweet tone. :)
Jerry
I use a scalpel in my leatherwork. I put walnut scales on the handle. It really improved the control, feel and comfort.
4 downvotes as of this comment. Why are these people here? The least they could do, I suppose, is explain their dislike.
Anyway, enjoying watching an instrument coming together, as usual, Jerry!
@Peter Rahill I'm deaf and I love it so that can't be it.
@Peter Rahill I can't figure out the downvoters either.
It's not hoarding it's optimistic storage. I'd love to see you make a mandolin using nothing but drops and cutoffs, a Poor Bastards mandolin.Like Dolly Parton's "Coat of many colors".
Body dollies on weighing the top? Very smart with their compound curves to accommodate! You are quite skilled and consistent.
Great effort again, Jerry !
I can hear the resonates on my mini iPad ok Jerry 👍🇬🇧
Wow!! Fan Sweden 👌🏻
That sound is a truly remarkable difference between the tops. The factory builders need to take a lesson in material selection and workmanship.
Now what crazy, fever induced, crackhead that is starving with worms from eating a bad burger would give this a thumbs down? Love. Love. Love the videos! Woohoo!
agreed, i think people should have to give reasons for a thumbs down.
@@Mulgy I think they do it just to get a rise out of you . . . ;-)
It won't be uniform Jerry, i think the term you were looking for was. I see something beautiful taking shape.
poor melissa looked frightened
A million likes...
I use the H F bar clamps like yours. The bar is a little soft and will twist. I cut an oak bar to tightly slip into the aluminum bar and the clamps are great now.
I’m a Guitar Player and to my ear what I hear is a Musical note similar to a conga . Point made . And that’s on an IPad .
I bet that micro scope does make it a lot better to work on. I could use one when soldering electronic boards but the price would probably stop me from getting one. Yeah I was gonna say the top does ring better than any of the one ones I have seen you make. I got a feeling this one is gonna be really super loud.
I can really hear that top ring, no comparison to the old one from the 80's you replaced. lots of good work happening!
Jerry,
I'm curious if you have considered using a Mittenwald gouge for the rough carving of the plates. We use this gouge (in conjunction with a cradle) in traditional violin making to get within one or two mm of the final measurement. It saves a lot of work with the fingerplanes and is much easier on the hands! I know you get a lot of tool recommendations in the comments, and I know you are very skilled with the methods you already use. However, I really can't imagine how hard it would be to arch and graduate a plate without the Mittenwald gouge, using only fingerplanes. And violin plates are smaller than mandolin plates! Either way, I love the videos. Thanks for sharing the process with us!
Do you have an image for the "cradle" you describe?
@@RAkers-tu1ey Oh yes. Sorry. It's a carved basswood board with a "negative" carving of a violin plate. You can set the plate in it face up or face down and it holds it in place while providing support. Most violin makers that I know of have fancy ones with built in clamps, but I made my own and it works just fine for me. Because violins don't vary much in shape, I can use it for almost anything I have to work on without stressing the wood too much.
Jerry, you should try to make a bigger and anatomic handle for this small finger planes. Holding then with the fingers is not good for your recovery.
Hopping you are getting better! Best regards!
Edit: You could try to make this in a way you still holding the plane with the fingers to feel the pressure, but the major effort to push it is not in the tip of the fingers.
I can see it coming; a Da Vinchi surgery system!
I am a wood hoarder too
Started as a mandolin for Chis. Ended as an auction mandolin
I agree either way but choice 3 seems better.
At 5:10, "Everything's a hammer." I heard that somewhere and this proves it.
I had always thought instrument tops were held together with dowels or biscuit joiner. I'm surprised glue alone is enough for a instrument joint that will vibrate. I guess that's why I build furniture and not instruments. ☺️
Yep, Canada is a big country and Bay Roberts, Newfoundland, is only about 100 kilometres from Cape Spear, which is the most easterly point of land in North America. (Maple trees are not native to that area.)
Bay Roberts, home of another TH-camr, Paul and Cathy Short, Specialty Mods. Their son is a luthier, but I don't know what city he works out of. Paul Short does play guitar, and give the literally small town, I would bet the recipient of this Mando knows Paul and Cathy... Really nice people.
Paul and Cathy really are super smart and every bit as nice as they seem; the recipient is my father; he and Paul have always known each other.
I heard Dad playing the new RSW mandolin a couple of mornings ago-I had no idea that he had this new instrument, since he had just bought a very nice one just a year or two ago. The difference was immediately noticeable, all the way across the house, and through closed doors. Each note he played was brighter, deeper, and resonated for a good ten seconds, or until he stopped it. This is the instrument that blows all of the other mandolins out of the water! I never knew a mandolin could sound this good. The best part, though, is watching Dad lose himself in playing it. Chris (and Mr. Rosa) knocked this way, way out of the park!
At my end, this new mandolin top that Jerry made sounds like exactly like a D note... one octave below middle D on a piano keyboard.
Jerry, maybe a bigger housing for the plane could help some. So much of that might take a toll on your fingers.
Also some finger planes have handle which reduces pressure on fingers supposedly
I have one with a handle already. And it works OK. But it won't do the detail I can do with the fingerplane
Yes I have one of those.
@@RosaStringWorks No free lunch i guess!
@@RosaStringWorks you could try building handles for it and finding a design that works
Yep, Melisa (sp) has really got the office manager gig down.
You're in the middle of being creative and she comes along, to hassle you with invoices.
LMAO
❤
With those F holes, sounds like a good excuse for a CNC.
Man you make lovely stuff and although I’d take a bunch of guff from my friends (I’m a gen X gloomy Gus to the blood) I love your music too
looking into getting my first mandolin. my first option is a private owned 2005 (never used/smoke free) michael kelly legacy classic tobacco burst with the herringbone top inlay for $295. did some research, looks like a great price for the age and condition. what do you think? im a flatpicker, looking for a loud bluegrass mando. can you tell me the significance in having herringbone inlay?
your tuner will actually pick up the tone of the wood and give you a read out
Yes you can build another one until your hands refuse to move and then... you'll have someone else make it for you directing them.
HE IS USING A PRINTERS RULER.
Perfick!
Your top sounds almost like a kettle drum
I'd be interested if at the end of this project you could advise all your dedicated viewers the number of "man hours" taken in the construction/finish of this mandolin.
I love watching your work Jerry, can I ask what bit you used in your Dremel for carving? I want to try some simple projects with my Dremel.
To me it sounds almost like you are tapping a drum head.
Beautiful work. I like that microscope. If you don't mind me asking, what did you lay out for that?
the top sounds like a low E on my lap top
great video as always Jerry. just wondering what wood you used for the neck block etc?
Cool, I can sing the pitch of the wood (33:15).
When the completed instrument is played, will pitches corresponding with this "build in pitch" sound louder than others? Isn't there a resonance making the loudness uneven? I know it is not but I wonder why.
I love to follow your work and your explainations of your decisions.
Please stay healthy!
The braces reduce that effect, but yes. That's part of what makes plywood bad for instruments, and worse for some than others: it has a resonance, but way in the table, because the different layers can't agree on frequencies except for higher multiples
