  • Today, I delve into the state of professionalism in the modern workspace. With changes in attire, communication, and overall behavior, it’s easy to question whether the traditional concept of professionalism has become outdated. I reflect back on my own career, starting in the 80s, and compare the standards from then to now, discussing everything from what we wear to how we communicate.
    Highlights:
Evolution of Workplace Attire: I discuss the significant changes in what is deemed acceptable work attire today compared to when I first started my career.
Hair, Make-Up, and Grooming: The importance of personal appearance and grooming is touched upon, including the recent CROWN Act and its impact on workplace inclusivity.
Communication and Behavior in the Workplace: I emphasize the significance of proper and effective communication, both verbal and written, and highlight the importance of exhibiting professionalism through our actions.
In this video, I aim to shed light on the importance of upholding certain professional standards, even as workplace cultures have become more casual. Professionalism might look different today, but it is certainly not dead-it’s just adapted to our changing world. Tune in to explore these changes with me and to find out how you can navigate the modern workspace while still maintaining a high standard of professionalism. Remember, how you present yourself matters, and professionalism is key to making the best, authentic impression.

“Within reason” is so subjective these days though, Ginny. Don’t you think?
I started my career in consulting where showing up in a clean suit and shirt was the standard but since I moved to the tech industry, there’s this informal nudge from my leaders and peers to be more casual.
So, while showing up in a clean “corporate” attire is MY standard, I have had to modify it a bit to align better with the environment I’m in.

I get it. When I got to Google I had to retire my Max Mara suits. I toned my attire down (and saved a ton of money) but didn't lower my standard of being"put together."Adapting doesn't have to mean assimilating or lowering your standard.

What if your office doesn’t value professionalism? Now with relaxed environments it’s perceived negatively

Please don't lower your standards. You value your professionalism and don't let anyone shame you or gaslight you into thinking you're doing something bad or wrong. Be the proud standard bearer and let other do their unprofessional thing. If you have to find a group or organization that values all of what you bring.

Right, like in German Firm where I've experienced like the colleagues and supervisors seems inmates in jail there's no professionalism, it was so horror experienced I've had in Germany, and majority of german people said, American people are always discriminating black people but I think bullying at work is an international problem not only in America but also in Europe which is for me worst
that's my opinion coz it's my experienced in Bavaria, Germany. Thanks Ginny💥

Be odor-free. What about the people who are from cultures in which deodorant/anti-perspirants (even the fragrance-free type) is frowned upon and never used, and you live in a hot sweltering climate? Strong odors emanating from the underarm region of the body can make for a extremely unpleasant work environment. What should workplaces do about this to avoid being labelled "culturally insensitive"?
