  • There's one #Evernote functionality I wish #Obsidian had. And maybe there's a #plugin that can help me, but I couldn't find it yet.

The Obsidian plugin "File Tree Alternative" has a so-called Evernote mode that uses separate views to display folders and their files along with the currently selected note

I know File Tree Alternative, but I never tried it because of the vertical layout shown on the plug-in page. I wasn't aware of that "Evernote mode". Thank you.

I'm also a big fan of both Obsidian and Evernote and really appreciate your videos and comments. One thing about this (that I know you already know) is that when we use a tool for years and years (like we have with Evernote) we tend to want to use the same workflows that worked for us for years in the other new tool (Obsidian). Sometimes they translate over, but sometimes we just have to do it differently and adapt to that difference. I'm having great success with the Dataview plugin to build a list of notes by tag(s) and to create like a "main tag note" with that Dataview list. I can put that list in the sidebar and pin it, or I can have it in a different tab group. It's a different way to work, but I find it better overall and more productive for my workflow.

Can I ask you: Why even use Obsidian AND Evernote? I only have one note program and that is Evernote.

I'm doing some tests with my workflow, but intend to keep only one as my main tool. However, I like both and plan to keep talking about both here on the channel.

@@vladcampos OK 👌🏻 What are you using Obsidian for usecase wise?

It seems your goal is to have a low friction folder navigation/search by tag. The trade off is allocating x% of screen space to folders, and organization time to moving files into a notebook folder.
If all files were in 1 folder and tagged, the approach to use would be to master dataview and have a split pane window, one for showing the list of results on x% if the screen and the other to open the selected file. This requires time to master dataview, but no time in folder organizing. This may boil down to a preference in determine how to find legacy information effectively

You could embed a PDF in another file then give that a tag or a property. It's not an elegant solution, but it would do what you want it to do.

I was actually doing this when I started, but it felt like I was duplicating files, and I decided to keep just the PDFs. I only create notes if I'm taking notes about the PDF or mentioning it in another note. It comes with some downsides, but, at least for now, I plan to keep up with this strategy.

I know you thought it was nice to put PDF's into Obsidian without being inside a note but being inside a note allows the full use of properties including aliases and tags plus easy linking to other relevant PDFs, and notes. Which in turn allows using one of the database plugins to create new ways of grouping and sorting. If you want to view the PDF without the note content you can open it from the attachment folder in the current note pane, a new tab in the same pane, a new note pane, in a new window, or in your PDF program. All can also be done from the PDF's three dot menu inside a note. I have my search and Bookmarks stacked on top of my file navigator and I just drag the divider depending on what needs more space. You can also drag them out to new panes. I'm still on the fence if either provides any real benefit. In my right side pane I have Outline and All Properties on top and tags, file properties, and local graph on the bottom. I spent years in Evernote and currently migrating from OneNote, I never saw the benefit of the separate "folder" and "notes" panes. This video doesn't sway me. Maybe your frustration got in the way of your usually clear explanations. I'm going to look at the File Tree Alternative Vaughn mentioned, maybe that's all you need. What I have often wanted other than a file tree filter like Evernote, is having multiple full file navigators. Often the easiest way to link is dragging from the navigator. Being able to stack navigators with different parts of the tree expanded would be handy.

I left Evernote(for obvious reasons) to take-up Obsidian and haven't looked back since
That said, and while I'm sure I am not an advanced user, Obsidian easily became my saving grace in terms of note taking.

My dream: an Obsidian with Evernote easthetics and 10 Gb/month for uploads! 😂

I have to agree with on the aesthetics. As for the uploads, I have been using Syncthing for a while and I have no complaints at all.

@@vladcampos yeah I'm using syncfolder, but I have to filter files when syncing my phone, otherwise I wouldn't be able to open Obisidian. On the other hand, I can dump everything in Evernote without facing such problem

Nem terminei de ver o vídeo e vc já tem algo q me incomoda muito no obsidian. Muita gente mostra mas sempre são poucas anotações poucas notas, poucos arquivos em anexo. Me perco facilmente, e a visualizacao me atrapalha muito tb.

🙄 Maybe, just maybe, the pronunciation has something to do with the fact that I was not born and didn't grow up in an English-speaking country. That said, that word and its pronunciation in Portuguese are almost the same as in English. So, I have no idea why you are hearing that "g" sound.
