    Apparently the original screenplay for Passengers read like more of a horror movie than what we ended up getting. The fact that Pratt's character woke up Jennifer Lawrence on purpose was meant to be a big reveal later in the film. It wouldn't have made the movie great or anything, but it might have been moderately better.

      Brandon Lawrence's I haven't seen passengers yet but it sounds like the twist of Pandorum the Sci Fi horror

      Brandon Lawrence I read the original script about 4 years ago (easy to find online) and can confirm that this is false. It was always a love story. These guys actually misunderstood her statement - after the release, a video went viral that posited a fan edit in which Jennifer Lawrence was the audience POV character, and it would have been much more like a horror/thriller. The revelation would've been a mid-point twist before we see Chris Pratt's story (waking up, spending a year alone, waking up JL), setting up a more interesting dynamic for the third act. This was what Lawrence was referring to - not suggesting that her character wake up first, but that we follow her character from the start, making Pratt an ambiguous antagonist.

      it wasn't the original screenplay, but a re-edit by a Russian guy (I believe) and it's called "Passengers: Aurora Cut".

      Just making the story from her point of view would have been so powerful. That way the protagonist becomes the victim of this situation, and forces his redemption arc to be so much more earned.

    Other than in some small, isolated areas, Comcast and Time-Warner didn't lay down the infrastructure of the Internet. They definitely didn't lay any of the fiber optic cable. (Much of which *still* sits unused after more than 20 years because the cable monopolies don't want to invest in the hardware.) The companies who built the underlying structure of the Internet (most of which was either partially or totally funded with taxpayer dollars) have all gone bankrupt. The remaining ones, like Comcast and T-W, merely bought that stuff for pennies on the dollar at the resultant asset auction, once they were assured of a monopoly for that region. So they have no moral high ground over Netflix or TH-cam when it comes to Internet access.

    The way Passengers should have gone, IMO, is start with Jennifer waking up. We experience everything from her POV, including learning the truth about Pratt. Make him squirrelly.
    However, I'd change a couple things:
    1. Have her find there's a third pod open but no third person. After she learns the truth that he woke her up, she also learns there was another person woken up who's since disappeared, a girl. She thinks Pratt's a psycho, and he starts to get painted that way, until we learn the truth: someone else woke him up, too. A girl. The missing third person. There was a problem with her tube, it malfunctioned. She woke him up to try to fix it because he's an engineer. But he couldn't. She died. And he was alone. For over a year. That was when he woke Jen up.
    2. At the end of the film, Pratt dies saving Jen. Consumed by loneliness, the film ends with Jen contemplating the same choice the others before her made, as she stares at someone in a pod, about to wake them.

    • @rachelk3887
      @rachelk3887 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is WAY better. Honestly I would've been fine with the movie if he woke her up and they started spending time together and liking each other, but it was framed as creepy and suspenseful, and then when she finds out he woke her up, they don't end up falling in love at the end. The rest of the movie is basically her wanting to get away from him but she can't because they're stuck here, until the climax happens at the end. But if they'd just not have them end up together, it would've been better. But your version is WAY better.

    There needs to be a new series where Soren does a "Better Late then Never" review/critique of films (like Amazing Spider-Man). He could also keep it relevant by discussing how it holds up (people were thankful for a new direction after Rami's S3 after all).

    I don't normally comment and i'm sure no one cares, but I have correction for Dan about Animorphs, granted he's probably not going to check this.
    1. The Animorphs got their morphing abilities from Elfangor, not Ax. Ax was Elfangor's younger brother that they met later on in the series.
    2. Tobias did get trapped as hawk but eventually regained his morph ability.
    3. In the books, Rachel was the one allergic to the crocodile DNA. Cassie was allergic to it in the tv series.

    I think Maggie at 8:20 got a bit confused. The point was that Jennifer agreed with critics who suggested to rearrange parts of movie so that the first thing we see is her woken up by Chris but without knowing his background or motivations or that he did wake her up/ That way the movie would have some horror aspects in it and would be overall a better movie.

    Cable companies like Time Warner and Comcast still make their money off the fact that to have an internet connection you still have to pay them money every month (for me $70.00), then you still pay for Netflix or other content providers. So Dan's point about cable companies having room to gripe about Netflix and others using the foundation they laid down is a little misguided.

      Mark Segura I agree

    • @brokenman58
      @brokenman58 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      not really. who existed first? the internet companies deserve their money and if you want something like netflix, thats an extra not a freebie.

    • @coloneldashing
      @coloneldashing 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      well my point is they get their money from consumers who, if they want to watch Netflix, must first have an internet connection, which they will have to pay for. So Netflix's existence, and other companies like them, encourages people to have an internet connection, and often higher speed internet that is more expensive. Without content providers the internet wouldn't be as enticing, and theoretically ISPs wouldn't have as many subscribers.

  • @MrBazBake
    @MrBazBake 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Netflix isn't being funded solely by investors.
    104 million subscribers/month * $8 minimum (11 if you have UHD) * 12 months = 10 billion dollars/year.
    They're leveraging 2 billion in debt against more than 2 billion in available cash to pay for their original programming up front.
    Also, telecoms aren't entrepreneurs. American taxpayers funded their infrastructure building in exchange for fast and affordable access and gave them the freedom to profit indefinitely from the service they provide on the infrastructure we paid for. Cable companies responded by not expanding infrastructure where it was inconvenient and giving us the worst internet in the developed world.

    It makes me sad how much of a company man Daniel is knowing eventually how screwed over he and others were by his company. He’s a loyal guy. I certainly value loyalty but I’m very wary about the scope. Like it’s good to be loyal to a person, or an idea, something small and manageable. But when you’re loyal to a company or a structure of any kind with so many moving parts, that becomes a huge opportunity to be abused.

    • @Caitlin_TheGreat
      @Caitlin_TheGreat 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Yeah, I don't know what the hell Dan was thinking, but the big ISPs are really getting a sweet deal. It's just that they thirst for money like a horror movie werewolf thirsts for blood. They will gladly hold sites, like Netflix, ransom in order to extort more money from us AND from Netflix. They have the FCC in their pocket right now. And furthermore, they aren't even re-investing their excessive profits, or rather they're re-investing very little of it (because all that money gotta go to the boys at the top) and so we still have terribly under-performing internet in the vast majority of the country.

    Netflix eased into the change very gradually, They started with DVD mailers then started offering the digital streaming for free along with a mailer subscriptions. Eventually they severed the tie and made it its own subscription service. One of the reasons Netflix has been able to survive the transition is it still has the very profitable stream of money from it's DVD mailer services which basically nullified the losses on the streaming side during the past five years when they had to spend the money on all that expensive original content and marketing to grow their digital subscriber base.

    I can't remember who I was watching who actually came up with a better passengers movie. I really wish I did because it was wayyyy better than the movie we got. But the gist of their argument was that It should have started with jlaw waking up and we didn't see all the stuff with Chris Pratt before hand and then the movie would be sorta thrillerish. Can we trust this guy or can we not with a twist that this sorta weird guy is actually the reason she was brought out of sleep cuz he is obsessed with her and was driven crazy in his loneliness. Then when the engine is about to blow he sacrifices himself for her and the ship in a semi-redeeming but still morally gray character way and she's left alone and then she goes crazy and it leaves on a cliff hanger of her waking some other person up to escape the loneliness.

    Martin mentions the restaurant they bought in a later episode when explaining how they never work well together, naming it the "stupidest" joint-venture they've ever had, but yes they never had to deal with the fallout. There's also an episode where Martin randomly sings a song to himself that was heavily featured in a previous episode, the one he wrote for Sinatra. Thank you for bringing up Frasier btw

    • @cesarperez970
      @cesarperez970 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bluchismoon I'm talking about people opening up the video as soon as possible just to dislike it. It's fine if you have already watched the content, but my comment was made about 30 seconds after the video was uploaded and the video had 5 dislikes. That made me wonder if people just disliked for no reason and it turns out some people. It turns out it is mainly people liking the feeling of being the first to like, view, dislike or comment on a video from a large TH-cam creator. But this is very problematic because the TH-cam counting system does not update instantly leaving some first comments that are not first as an example. Also many people might have gotten the feeling of being the first dislike, but in actuality they weren't because many other people also did the same slightly before or after. Then a couple seconds later when I got around to opening up the video, TH-cam was able to register the dislikes and display them on my device and it seemed like quite a disproportionate amount compared to the dislikes, but of course much later the like to dislike ratio seems to even out because people are not disliking for no reason and they are finishing the video to give a real opinion on the topic of the video. Of course I don't blame them for wanting to do that because doesn't everyone like to be first. It gives you sense of discovery, but it may seem quite annoying when it constantly being spammed. Thank you for reaching the end of this comment. Sorry, I really do like to write a lot.

    The thing about Passengers, I feel like if a famous 'deep' director like Stanley Kubrick came out with that exact same movie, everyone would praise him, saying "it's supposed to look like a happy ending because we're seeing it from the perspective of the captor who's happy because he wanted this in the first place, and the victim who thinks she's happy due to Stockholm syndrome. We as outside viewers are supposed to be disturbed at how clearly wrong their happiness is. Brilliant! Genius! Applause! Applause!"

      [Yoshikage_Kira] Not yet. They're starting an ESPN streaming service next year and a film streaming service the year after. At that point, they'll pull all their content from Netflix, which includes LucasFilms, Marvel, Pixar, and more in addition to films made under the Disney name.
      Frankly, I think it is an antitrust violation. They have such a large share of the content that they can use that market dominence to take the delivery market regardless of whether or not they do it as well as netflix and youtube.

    Netflix is still in the driver's seat because they also have a DVD service that no one can touch. Remember DVD's? So if it isn't on their streaming service, you put it in the DVD queue and 2 days later you're watching it. I kind of like waiting for content 'cause it reminds me of when you had to wait for EVERYTHING to air on its given day. Meanwhile, there is so much streaming content that I'm never without something to watch. CBS Access is going to tank because they expect you to pay and watch commercials. The whole reason to pay is so you don't have to watch commercials. That's why Cable is failing. Commercials. I too hope that Disney's service fails. I have no plans to pay for it or for Hulu, Amazon, etc. As long as everything I want to watch is available on DVD, I'll stick with Netflix.

    • @imaginarymask
      @imaginarymask 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Daniel Coffman Being mad about someone making a technical error during an off the cuff/unscripted SYNOPSIS about Animorphs does nothing to support the scarce fandom. Technically, he never said that Ax gave them their power to morph, just that meeting up with Ax and getting the power to morph were bullet points of major events in the series. If you take the time to scroll through the comments, you'll see that more people who claim to be Animorphs fans are complaining about what he said, instead of congratulating him on talking about the long dead and mostly forgotten series, which ultimately discourages further discussion and keeps the series dead, because no one is interested in hearing a bunch of nerds argue about which Animorph female had crocodile allergies, though they might be interested by a passionate discussion of fans demonstrating how awesome the series was.

      You do realize we're talking about the person who has two entire shows devoted to pop culture pedantry? Three if you count this one. I understand that he studies up on material for skits but, as A. Leander said, he played it up as him definitively knowing. You obviously don't participate in any nerd events, because it's exactly my comment that shines the whole time. That's why everyone is there. There's only one thing nerds love more than trivia and that's correcting people. Seriously, that's the entire point of After Hours. Also, protip, someone saying they're mad about something on the internet usually means they're not actually angry about it, just found it an odd quirk that though them off.

    Like some others pointed out, sometime the actors sign up for a specific movie, but there's so much rewritings or input from higher-ups that the movie completely change from what they originally sign on. Quick examples: what the original script of Prometheus, or how Annie Hall was supposed to be a murder mystery with a romantic subplot, but was edited (post shooting) to only keep the romantic storyline. Two movies at opposite ends of the spectrum, but it shows how it can greatly change from when the actor signs the contract to what actually comes out on film. That's why I usually don't have issue with actors (and other people attached to a movie) "complaining" about a movie...the Katherine Heigl of this world not included
