      In my experience, sumps are far LESS maintenance. With a canister you have to lug it to a sink to clean, with a sump you just clean it in place.

    Great video Jay. There aren't many people left on TH-cam that give a true review because they are all being compensated by the company's..thank you for being honest and true.

    • @NCHornet

      How can you call this a review? Review of what? He never put any media in the thing. He reviewed the fact that it doesn't leak, and that's about it. I suppose you like car reviews where they sit in the parking lot with the windows down and the AC blowing wind in their face. Fill it up with media, use it for what it was designed for, that's a review. Also, he is being compensated, he got the filter for free, what do you call that? A review is an honest review when you lay down your hard earned cash to buy one just like everyone else. I'm not saying that Jay isn't being honest here, just making a general statement. Although he sure isn't worried about that band clamp like he was before this showed up. Maybe that was a fluke? I want to know how it works as a filter not a circulation pump. Hopefully that will come in another update to another update? Later

    Good job again with exciting introduction... I am a happy SunSun customer.
    Here's a thought though.
    If you do a timed and measured test on Maximum output rate with a stopwatch and a 5 gallon bucket?
    Just mark a line on the pail at a known volume (say 4 gallons) and put canister return on the pail.
    Time fill to mark twice. Once without media and once again with media.
    Calculate:
    Divide the total seconds (example: 20 seconds for 4 gallons) by 4 to get one gallon pump time in seconds.
    Take the 5.0 seconds per gallon time and divide 60 by 5 to get 12 gallons per minute flow rate.
    Multiply gallon per minute rate 12 x 60 = 720 GPH or gallons per hour.
    Working backwards with 1215 GPH /60 gets you an insane 20.25 gallons per minute with no media at full speed.
    Without actual measured data your impression of actual output is just as mystic as the aquarium industry's unsubstantiated claims on just about every filter package on the market.
    We, as hobbyists, need to demand a set of standards from all manufacturers that is fair and consistent across all markets.

    I love the idea of this filter but it's hard to say it's a go until you put all your sponges and medium in there and see how well it runs then. But if it's good for a 75 to 125..... then it's a banger!

      I have one myself and am quite happy with it. Was just wondering what you thought about it after using it a while. I optimized mine as much as possible. Prefilter sponge on Intake. Same ppi sponge as prefilter around the outside of top tray in that gap from tray to housing and the top tray is 5 layers of sponge and filter floss. The other 2 trays all biomedia. Aquaneat ceramic bioballs. Not the top of the line filter media but does a great job. Actually thinking about purchasing some biohome ultimate to replace it with eventually. Do you think I should put it in mesh bags and leave in my tank a while before replacing the current biomedia or just put it in the canister one tray at a time over a couple of filter maintenance days? Sorry that was pretty wordy. 😬👍.
      Have you heard from that person you gave it to to follow up and see how they like it?

    • @mbunacichlid6777
      @mbunacichlid6777 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I m definitely not new, unless 25 years is new. If the flow is to strong you bought the wrong pump. I did never turn down the flow of my pump. And you can turn down the flow of your Fluval very easy. Without a useless tech gizmo

    • @NCHornet
      @NCHornet 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Reducing flow with the shut off valves isn't the best way of doing it. Many pumps are sensitive to back pressure, is the Fluval pump one of these? I don't know and for what they cost, I'm not going to experiment, lol!!! Reducing flow by reducing the pump speed is by far the best way of doing it. I too have in this hobby a very long time, and my statement is valid. I have several Fluval and Sunsun filters. Fluval is still top dig but bang for buck goes to the Sunsun.

I currently have a Sunsun 304 on my 55 gal (SeaClear System 2) cichlid tank but I want to upgrade to a HW5000 now. I know its probably a bit strong for such a small tank, but someday I plan to upgrade to a 125 or better and I am doing my due diligence on what type of canister to get. It's not a filter without media. Load it up with various media and run it for 6 months and report back. I'm not a hater, I have several Sunsun filters and may end up with one of these but not until they have been out awhile. I never buy the very first one of anything. I don't get free filters Sent to me, if I did, I would use them for what they were designed for, a filter. I really like the electronic control of flow vs the manual on my FX4's and FX6's. I never understood why Fluval didn't have a pause, or very low setting, for feeding time. However, like Jay said before this freebie showed up on his porch, that band clamp n seal on the top scares me. Now that he got a freebie, he backs down from this, probably because when the HW7000 comes out he wants another freebie. I have seen these types of clamps fail on many, many things besides canister filters. I don't trust it, not yet. 240 gal is a lot of water to loose, not to mention all the fish. Time will tell, never have I seen a new car that wasn't shiny and smelled good. Drive that bad boy, WITH MEDIA, then report back in 6 months. Later

      @@str82itkb88 has to do with the uv light. I'm pretty sure every hw-5000 in existence has that code. Mine had it right out of the box.

      Lol can't review a filter with no media in it !!

    • @espeterson522

      Fluval uses AC pumps, this uses a DC pump. You can't modulate power to an AC pump, hence why there's no electronic flow control. It also explains why this filter is virtually the same cost as an FX6 (which it is basically a clone of). The DC pumps are 2x the price of equivalent AC pumps.

    Flow looks the same as FX6 with media in it. A lot of praise for something that nobody has run for over 6 months. Like the saying goes "You get what you pay for"

      I haven't tried sun sun yet but I do run fx6 and an eheim 2213 on a 75 gal. Fx6 flow rate decreases significantly after 30 days. The eheim maintains its Flow rate after 3 month mark. If I insert any of the fluval polishing pads the blue or the white one, within 2 weeks the flow is reduced to half its capacity. I suspect when that happens the water just gets pushed around it. That is my only complaint on fx6

      The fx series has a maintenance port and have a gravel vac attachment for it so you can gravel vac without loosing any water. And you can do water changes with the canister filter itself. For that reason there's no canister filter better than the fx6

    "durability"??? You keep saying that word but it hasn't been running for more than a few minutes...Maybe you mean "sturdy"? I would like to see a 6 month update in order to confirm even its short term durability. I am a fan of Sunsun, have two 304b and they have been relatively trouble free, just ordered a FX6 at a 40% discount, and wondering if this would be a good substitute and I should send it back...

    The only thing I could see on the video that I don't like compared to the fx6 is the intake tube it's very small and it stays round all the way down, where the fx6 intake tube goes down into your intake the little screen basket I guess you would call it at the end of the intake tube that's a lot bigger sucking a lot more debris and detritus in a lot more area for all little floaties to get sucked up in
