  • In this video I open this cool OTF, Microtech Cypher II to see why the Marfiones decided to implement this drastic design change, screwless construction. Did it buy us anything other than the marketing hype? Will it benefit the knife user?

    Just an FYI, that per Microtech those boss screws (4 hidden screws) must NOT ever be tampered with or it will void your warranty. This was brought up on a disassembly video that Microtech made (on new Hera II), as they have a very specific torque spec. Just search for the video on the disassembly of the Combat Troodon / Hera II on Microtech's YT channel. There, while disassembling the Hera II Ray talked about that specifically. 🤠👍

    Very good channel, nice to see somebody with actual knowledge and interest in technology not just moving around an object and telling absolut subjective toughts. Im tired of the hundreds of "reviewers" who dont share INFORMATION, just telling us how they like something that they will never use. Keep on the good work, greetings from Hungary.

    I carry a Chris Reeve Large Inkosi and alternate with a Medford Slim Midi (and have a good collection of Medford and Chris Reeve). About 2 years ago I bought an Ultratech and carry that as a secondary knife - I have several and then purchased this Cypher - blown away by the quality and just bought a natural finish Cypher. I really like what Microtech is doing and I plan to add a last gen Combat Troodon and a Gen III Troodon as soon as the Warhound and Tanto versions come out. I sensed a big uptick in design and execution with the Cypher and really appreciate your take!

    • @CuttingBoardRx

      I think OTFs are a decent EDC tools but not ideal for self defense. For the latter, I’d rather have a puukko but I grew up near the Golf of Finland so am biased. From your videos, your Entrenching Shovel is a lot scarier in your hands 😅

    Microtech stated those tapered screws are non user serviceable as they are torqued to a specific value and it voids warranty just to let you know

    • @CuttingBoardRx

      Sure thing. There’s absolutely no situation that I could foresee that would require removal of these screws ever. In fact, other makers of the screw-less OTFs mill these retention bosses straight out of the same block of metal as the handle. I’m going to do a video comparing 3 different knives of this type.

    I really like the new microtech otf's. I'm in the market for a otf. However I was told that microtech runs there metals on the soft side so I've stayed away. What have you found with your testing of micro tech?

    • @CuttingBoardRx

      I’m very impressed with their OTFs and I was always able to get them screaming sharp. They heat treat the steel for balance between edge retention and toughness, which is the root of all the arguments: some people look at them as EDC and demand edge retention, while others prefer toughness as it’s crucial in the self defense scenarios. I am in the latter camp, because I always carry 2 blades - 2.5-3” EDC and 3.5-4” for other uses.

  • @joshdoe7288

    I saw a comment on another video of some guy complaining that the edge of the blade on the cypher 2 would get dulled by rubbing on the locking gate every time it’s deployed/ retracted. What are your thoughts on that? I doubt microtech would do something like that but wanted to ask your opinion.

    • @CuttingBoardRx

      Normally I would say he’s mixed up the front and the rear gates (happens on some knives) but it would be impossible on this model. Nor could it be jammed because it sits in a tight pocket. Conclusion: out of tolerance component.

    It's the pricing problem that US knife companies will have to conquer. I just bought an Eafengrow EF131 that's unreal for $59. Tops would charge $175 for something similar.

    • @CuttingBoardRx

      I agree when it comes to Tops, ESEE, and LT Wright: these are overpriced by 30-50%. White River is more deserving because they use more advanced steels and their craftsmanship is a lot higher.
