Bought the aurora knife and tool "truffles". A knife that went kind of viral. There OEM sucks. Bought teal accents and had aurora install them (225 total, 185 i think was just the kickstarter knife price). The teal accents looked horrible. They looked weathered. Perhaps when there were installed someone with oily hands installed? The pocket clip reverse accent was just really poorly Anodized. So I opened the knife up to swap to the original plain ti accents. There were metal burrs/bits hanging off of many screws holes. The build quality was very poor. And I looked on aurora knife and tools site that other people were having problems too. So It wasn't just mine. Aurora if you read this get a new OEM.
I also have been burned by buying a knife jarred showed. Sitivien 995. What a piece of crap that knife is. Agree completely that these knife tubers don't really test there stuff. And lets be real, not only do they not have time to properly test but they aren't about to bite the hand that feeds.

It’s certainly a good looking knife. I have a knife that I recently received that had aesthetic issues , plus it had a grinding sensation which I cleaned out metal dust. But the killer was the blade rock.
Not a cheap knife at nearly 500usd.
The brand will take the knife back or fix it. I wonder the fact they know I’m a TH-cam reviewer means they treat me differently.
What I don’t know is this a one off or typical of their quality because people like me buy knives for the aesthetics and the novelty of it. I have plenty of real use knives. I would had to stop buying almost a decade ago if it’s strictly a tool for use.
Hardness has become a trendy topic. I’ve notice AliExpress sellers showing vids and pics of the hardness test of the knives they are selling. So this is a good thing you are doing in bringing awareness. I think it will become more the norm and keep the brands under control. Hopefully.

Leeb testers are not suitable for thin materials like knives. You're checking the accuracy on the block, but that's of a sufficient mass. It doesn't really show how accurate a thinner material with gel is.
Unfortunately it doesn't stand up to ASMT norms, and I'm skeptical of the accuracy.
Have you cross referenced your results with other penetration or Vickers testers?

@@CuttingBoardRx thanks, just watched it. I don't doubt the remettre HT is soft. My question is more with the use of the leeb tester.
The follow up video shows that likely the Hogue is harder than the Remette, but I still don't know how much to trust the results since it's not the right equipment for the material thickness.
I appreciate you bringing some (much needed) testing to the TH-cam space. But you may be presenting inaccurate results and influencing the audiences opinion unjustifiably.
If you could cross reference a few results with a penetration/micro vickers tester, I think that could give you more of a leg to stand on going forward. And for your peace of mind. Just my 2 cents.

It seems there are tons of these newer companies that contract out manufacturing to places who lack the true knowledge of good knife building. This seems to be a mix of quality control problems and design issues with your example here, and it's done all in the name of making a buck. While it's great the industry is full of choice in 2024, its sad that we see such obvious failure here that is telling greatly of their quality control process and lack of attention to detail.

Hello CBRx, I ordered a Peregrine RTT 1T (full lightning) a few days ago and I received it yesterday... Your video made me a little cold when choosing the knife! I was perhaps luckier than you, because on my copy, there is no play (neither front nor lateral), the lock engages well and resists the "stress" of the blade... I I cannot control the hardness as I do not have a suitable machine, and I do not have the necessary perspective to form an opinion on the hardness (or softness) of the M390 used... All the screws were well tightened; I specify this, because this was not the case on the "Rhino" model of the same brand, or none of the screws (except those of the pivot) were... Good luck with your quality videos! And see you in future videos... Sébastien

Other people have tested their Peacock, which is a budget knife, and it consistently got 60-60.7 HRC across 4 knives
    And that’s made of 9Cr18
Their M390 should be around 60+
I’d have sent this back in personally
They seem to have a good heat treat on their D2 and 14C28N as well, higher then average
So this M390 rating is really disappointing
The lock failure was also disappointing
A button operated liner lock is awesome, it’s sad that this one didn’t seem to fit properly

On their 9Cr18 for the Peacock, they hit 61 HRC consistently
      3 knives tested
They advertise a range of 58-60 HRC, but the 3 knives were at 59.9, 60.8 and 61.2
This was by an independent reviewer
Another test was on their steed, just one knife was tested that I could find, but it was advertised as 58-60 on their M390, but it hit 62.6
Perhaps they used a different manufacturer specifically for this model?
Or perhaps they just had a really bad batch, either way, I’d have requested a new blade through RMA before posting this video, and keeping your identity a secret
From what I have seen, they have 1/2 decent customer support, and if you had done that, you could have really caught them if it was a greater issue, or would have been pleasantly surprised if it was a one off issue (or one batch issue ig)
While I’m all for holding companies accountable, I think you went a bit too aggressive with the messaging about this company
They make damn good products, just this model should be avoided until they can prove it’s been fixed/ isn’t a greater issue
Their Swordfish model takes a lot of engineering, and good execution

Frame locks suck in my opinion

This is not a frame lock. It’s a liner lock with pivot button actuation.

@@CuttingBoardRxpersonally frame liner lock are basically the same thing. I'm betting frame lock is probably the cheapest option.
Both I've come across the same failures.

Didn't you already test this knife in this fashion and possibly damaged it in the process? Just to be fair. I have no intrest in purchasing this knife, but shouldn't you take it apart to check the inside components? Your also testing the blade hardness at an angle and not straight un and down.

My tester accounts for the direction of strike. The first part of your question is arguable but I will take it apart eventually. My point is why would anyone pay $250 for a no-name, no-warranty, unknown source knife that is competing with absolutely stellar knives like Mini Adamas, TRM Atom, Para 2, Hogue Mysto, ZT 350…. To name a few?

@@CuttingBoardRxYour reply is spot on. The knives you mention are all excellent choices. I'm constantly amazed at how many new knife brands are popping up in the $250 plus price range.
Appreciate your swimming against the tide of knife reviewers that insist I "must have" the newest thing.
