This truly shows that "real" racing and "real-life" footage can be just as exciting as what is shown in big-budget movies. How many times as race fans do we have to set aside our expectations in a movie as to how the racing is depicted because, "well, if the movie just filmed real racing, it wouldn't be as exciting." So many times the racing scenes are cut to align with the story. The hero is too far behind and going to lose, what will happen? Oh I know, the hero can just press the gas pedal more! Congrats on your story-telling Alex! I love all of the footage and how you pieced the entire story together. Can't wait for the next one!
Exactly! I have felt the same way about most modern racing movies which is why I made this and my previous documentary with Jeremy at Watkins Glen. Making the racing scenes I wish I saw in these films. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment. I agree that its a mistake to think that "reality" is boring and needs to be injected with excitement. I prefer the hard work of finding the excitement and bringing it to the surface through story. Cheers man, there will be more of these.
900 million people follow F1 worldwide. You can’t categorize all racing flicks from one of the worst of all time. It is incredibly difficult for them to stage realistic racing sequences. That is why “Le Mans” is so venerated by people who actually know what the sport is all about, despite it being a box office disaster.
I think Le Mans really could have been something special if the production didn't stall and Sturges didn't leave. That film had to get wrapped, and wrapped fast, so the storytelling got sacrificed to just get it finished. They also ran into a huge challenge filming that movie in the real race: their "stars", Wyer's Gulf Porsche's, were all out of the race by 2am. It forced them to have to do a lot more staging than they probably hoped. That combined with the lack of script was just a tough situation to turn into a film. I still love Le Mans though, I see it as a kind of tragedy of production. It could have been a one of a kind film. At least we have some glorious actual footage on film from the race. I'm lucky gopros are so much smaller than a 35mm cinema camera haha@@Formaldehydex
@@follow_freeman Could it have been better made for the general audience? Of course. But I don’t know of a single racer, be it professional or amateur, who thinks the film isn’t great just as it is. It captures what racing is really about quite brilliantly despite the shortcomings. As I stated, making a film about racing is incredibly difficult to do. That is true even with GoPros instead of 35mm. Btw I downloaded your video to watch later. The first minute or so seems quite interesting. But I did think it was a bit odd to apparently state the hp of the cars at the rear wheels instead of the crankshaft.
As a filmmaker, I think Le Mans is lacking, as a racing enthusiast (and hopefully future racing driver) I'm grateful it was made. For the HP rating: The reason for that is the main rule of this series is keeping the cars aligned to a power-to-weight ratio of 12.5:1 lbs to HP. The horsepower is measured at the wheels. There is footage later in the film that shows this, cheers!
It's so cool to be able to put faces to the voices I hear on podcasts. You guys have found a recipe that will help keep grass roots motorsports alive. Thanks for that.
Outstanding. An absolute gem of a movie. In a time where motor racing content is dominated on TH-cam by people (can't call them film makers or content creators) who hide behind a misunderstanding of 'Copyright section 107' and upload 'documentaries' featuring stolen footage and photography, it's so refreshing to find something that is all original (top quality) footage with amazing editing, colouring and sound - but most importantly features compelling storytelling. As someone who covered UK grassroots racing in the past it is of real interest to look into the American equivalent. Bravo Sir! It is positively inspiring (in the sense that it means I have to up my own game now!)
I appreciate that a lot. Poured a lot of effort into making the kind of film I wanted to see and show the racing footage I was always hoping for in other films. So glad it resonated with you and that is a compliment I really take to heart as someone who is hoping to combine my filmmaking career with my passion for racing. Cheers from across the pond!
I love the "Frankenheimer" "Grand Prix" elements. Multi-screen views, driving with the driver voiceovers. CLASSIC! BRAVO!! "There is no terrible way to win. There is only winning!" And I love all the "red Dixie cups" at the podium!!
Your skill at crafting a compelling story, from the voices of real racers, and editing an engaging film using a limited number of cameras and angles is an inspiration! As a small car content creator I'm in awe at the excellence in your film making. Keep it up!
Thank you! It takes a lot to do every part of the process but I really enjoyed putting this one together. I'm glad its inspiring to other creators. Working on the next one now!
Its a fun one to be around for sure, and they tour across the country. I found them when they came to Watkins Glen (unfortunately they arent stopping there in 2024, but Limerock is one i'm trying to get to next year)
Fantastic production. It also helps to have content as rich as GLTC (one of my favorite racing series ever) to draw from. Keep up the amazing work Alex!
Thank you! Yes, the series really does have a very classic racing feel to it. Great competition, and true sportsmanship among the drivers, even in the rivalries.
This popped up my feed, awesome docu! As a racing fan it’s cool to show how the racing scene is like, great footage shots. BTW, cool to see a model 3 there, @15:48 charging. I AX my model 3 and plan on getting it some track time.
Thank you, I really appreciate it man. I put a ton of passion into this one (matched I think by the subjects of the film) and its nice to know its recognized. Cheers!
Of course: Gopro 11 mounted on the splitter Gopro 10 mounted for pedals Gopro 10 mounted for rear camera GH5 with 25mm lens facing driver for portrait shot GH5 with 17.5mm lens for over the shoulder shot. Same setup in the Watkins Glen doc "Risk vs Reward" also on my channel but without the gopro 11. Everything was hard mounted, all nuts were nylon locknuts or had the bolts drilled for cotter pins. The Gh5 cameras had the mount bolted to the cage, then a security strap around body + cage, and the strap lugs had safety wire threaded through them in case a camera somehow came loose it couldnt go far. The front gopro was bolted directly through the plywood splitter, and next year I will update this with safety wire securing the gopro to the car because in a rear ender it could (though unlikely) break the splitter. Rear gopro was bolted to a handy rear crash bar, but thats the most challenging area to mount. You have to take redundancy seriously with the external gopros as I do not want to be the cause for a debris flag. And the interior cams have triple redundancy in case of a crash.
Thank you for the info! Absolutely incredibly work. It's painfully clear the attention to detail in everything; production, framing, story-telling, the score, the continuity. Everything is top notch. Please continue to bless everyone with everything you do. We need more humans like you in the world. If I can make it out to a GridLife event next year, I'd like to hunt you down and see the setup first-hand! Happy Holidays!!@@follow_freeman
There is another vid to watch but unfortunately, YT blocks other titles and channels so I'll have to break it up and you will need to put it back together. . 1 ) On 7 ) Motor 3 ) with a Formula 6 ) 4 ) Ford 1600 8 ) Sport 2 ) track 5 ) Episode 5
From a random petrolhead in Germany who found this by accident: What a truly beautiful little film, thank you!
Vielen Dank!

Haha I knew someone would see it! Frankenheimer set the bar high, I definitely edited a few homages to him and Saul Bass here
Homage to the greats! This is fantastic!! @@follow_freeman
This is better than so much of the racing/automotive content on Netflix and Amazon. Nicely done!
Really appreciate that man!

What an awesome doco. I really like the way it’s shot. I’m a car guy but didn’t know about this series. Really interesting. Thank you.

Looks like the corvettes had the advantage for 23’
we'll see how the rule changes for next year switch things up
Time 1830 No such thing as a perfect lap? Ken Miles would beg to differ.
