Incredible, thanks for posting! To me, this is a reminder of the folly of Eddie Van Halen's intro of EC for the Top 100 guitarists in Rolling Stone's 2003 poll (you all probably know he was #2). Eddie basically disparaged his playing since Cream. While he admittedly "was far too laid back" after heroin and during his alcoholic period from '73 - '78, he played plenty of blistering leads even on albums in the '80s and '90s and his live playing remained stunning until at least 2004. Too bad Eddie wasn't paying attention.
Eddie had an ego, and people kept comparing him to Clapton, Hendrix, and Page. He was always ranked behind them in polls. I believe this would take its toll on anyone. Also, Eddie and Brian May recorded a blues jam dedicated to Clapton on their StarFleet album, and Clapton didn't like it. Clapton said (I'm paraphrasing), "It was terrible, they're playing with no dynamics, or feel. Their playing notes with no sense of phrasing, and he just wished they didn't dedicate this to him." The critique was harsh, but it needed to be said. I think Brian May and Eddie Van Halen are top-notch players, but they were definitely out of their wheelhouse when it came to the blues at that time. Personally, I think Eddie should have taken it as constructive criticism and tried again rather than hold a grudge. As the saying goes, "You never learn if you don't fail first."
Interesting. I seem to remember an impromptu jam session at the Limelight nightclub in Chicago that same year after a Clapton concert nearby that featured Buddy Guy Eric Clapton Robert Cray and Phil Collins. I wonder if anyone might have recorded that one. I was at the concert but not the jam session.
I just now found it, I put it up on my Facebook newsfeed for my Japanese musicians and music fans there, no one in America pays attention, too busy praising Disney
Jam-just say's The Blues IS THE BEST THING EVER -MAN!!!!....✌️☮️❤️😀🎸 yeah man.x
Awesome! I love how loud this recording is -- the volume almost sounds Cream-levels of loud.
I just adore Buddy Guy❤️

Where's Buddy
Can't hear Buddy
Clapton's playing is forthright, and his strat loud and clear, but while I see his fingers moving, I can barely hear Buddy Guy playing.
It was the (wrong) mix
