_Smile 2_ has flaws, but I thought the good outweighed the bad. The fact that I cared about Skye Riley in spite of her unpleasantness is a testament to Naomi Scott's talent. I seriously hope she stars in more horror films - after recovering from this role, of course.
Great review! I saw it earlier today and was really impressed/ appropriately creeped out. I never saw the original so I appreciate your comments on how this felt like a redo. I'm glad 2 was my introduction to the concept/ series.
Smile one was just a random movie I put on one night and it hit me as terrifying. I was going through a hard time in life and the psychological torment she faced struck a terrible feeling in me. I watched it about a year later and it had virtually none of the same effects on me as the first viewing, like I out grew it. Smile 2 was mostly jump scares but several emotions took over at different points in the film.
Naomi Scott's performance recalls Catherine Deneuve in "Repulsion," and perhaps a bit of Roman Polanski in "The Tenant," though those films are on a somewhat different plain. Inspired and energetic, Scott carries the movie.
i can't believe it's good, the last one felt a notch about a redbox movie for me, the kind of movie you'd put on in a middle school sleepover, but i'll check this new one out. thanks for the review
Hopefully u can review ( Red Rooms ) for me the scariest movie of the year a French film from a Canadian Director, shows no blood just imagery, tone and atmosphere. Very smart film
Smile 2 was boring and predictable It was a decent film, but everything that made the first one good made this one predictable Something new needed to be added to be more interesting I was bored throughout apart from the first 10 minutes, i really liked
I know (as yet) nothing about the Smile franchise (?) but I'm revisiting images of Aphex Twin's Windowlicker video in my head now... And also the Man Who Laughs from 1928.
I have been enjoying your reviews for some time now and i agree with almost every review you posted until this. If we break down the 1st movie and what made that movie famous is the psychopathic smile, that's why we love characters like the joker. Parker Finn did a good job with taking the idea of the smile and constructing a narratives that is told through the eyes of Rose Cotter, even though the 1st film left room for a sequal Smile 2 felt like a copy and paste with exact same events that is told through a pop star's perspective. Like you said smile 2 is solid Halloween flick and so is the 3rd instalment of Terrifier but I believe Smile 1 was sooo close of becoming a classic horror film in the modern day and thecsequal is a huge step down. But i will say this as well Parker Finn has done a great job or even better job with the directing the film but ist the trajectory of the narrative and lack of originality what made this movie a L. All things aside this is just another perspective I love your content and your reviews keep doing what you do and happy Halloween.
Yeah the 2nd one was ultimately just a straight-up rehash of the original with a popstar angle this time. Was pleasantly surprised by the first one but this was a letdown.
You word for word said EXACTLY what I said to myself right after watching this - "This film had no business being as good as it is". I had no prior familiarity with the property and rolled my eyes when I saw the promotional material - I mean another Saw-like franchise... No thanks. What a pleasant surprise and what a committed performance from Naomi Scott, there's a danger with this kind of performance to over do it but she never gets there.
I really liked this movie too. But the thing i didn't like is how the entire movie seems to be in her mind, then we come back to reality, at least we think we do. I dont like not knowing whats real or not. Thats a cop out from the writer. But i did enjoy it and look forward to the future of this franchise.
Just watched smile 2 tonight and I wholeheartedly love this review! Really crystallized many of my thoughts. Naomi Scott went for broke in the best way possible. Her eyes also said so much.
I don’t like my time being wasted on dream sequences or hallucinations. This movie has way too much of that. It takes me out of it. After a while, watching things happen to her have no impact because I know it isn’t actually happening. I don’t see how anybody thinks this is better than the first. It was a gem in a year full of horror gems. But we’re not all the same and people should watch movies for themselves and form THEIR OWN opinions
Brilliant analysis. I loved this film. It's probably my favorite horror film of the year barely beating out Longlegs. My only minor complaints are a few too many jump scares and I would've liked to see some more of the lore on the entity. Did it plan the ending or was it a coincidence? Scott was amazing.
I've seen 36 new theatrical releases this year. This is my favorite movie of the year. I've been craving a good Lovecraftian/ cosmic horror style movie for nearly a decade. This blew me away. I've seen it 3 times so far, and i plan on seeing it again. Naomi Scott and Parker Finn have a new fan.
I didn't finish your review the last time I tried as you had praise for the film, so I chose to see it before I finished with your review. The film was crazy but immediately left my mind as I drove home and had a psychotic driver careen past me only to get a rare opportunity to drive by him as he was stopped at a light. He didn't even take his EMS jacket off. That sickened me, and I was literally pretty sick, so I told him what I thought and spit my Halls at his car window. I'm going to try to recollect what I saw at the theatre. No easy task but you are right, it was insane and they tapped into it in a palpable stressed shooting star way. I do think viewpoint horror is the future and the way this demon manipulates, makes Candyman and others in that vein really toothless.
wow, ok. did not care for the look of the movie as projected in the trailer. but your enthusiasm makes me want to see it. thanks as usual for the smart and informed perspective on this one :)
The best thing is how much the trailers didn’t show compared to the first it made the experience that much more surprising when it did all the scares and twists
Usually we would say less is more in these type of films but in smile it really felt like we really needed more, it was almost like it forgot to add creepy and suspenseful moments. But I felt the same their was something in the concept and thought the trailer looked like it might actually achieve that, review gives me hope.
Thanks for reviewing! I agree with many of your reviews but I hated this film 😂 all the yelling and shouting became too much for me. By yelling and shouting I mean the arguments she kept having. Then that gulping of the water was grossing me out. Oh well. Still, you’re my favorite reviewer! So keep them coming. I will always watch….
Part 2 IMO was way better than 1. I didn't even like 1, but glad I got to see this because it exceeded my expectations. It was a very good movie. Something I didn't think it would even be.
"sequel took the original film and improved in nearly every. single. way!" - Sorry, I had to stop watching here. Dreadful, cheap, embarassing film and a slap to the face of anyone watching it. The writer/director should never be allowed to make a film again.
I liked this a lot more than the first cause of Scott, but I think this franchise is held back by there basically being no rules. This demon or whatever can seemingly do anything at any time, so it lowers the stakes.
you make me smile bc you’re just smart asf because smile IS a short film they made into a feature length???? 😭😂 watch it!!!!!! it has the actress of the first therapy session who slits her throat. i know you don’t fancy the first film but there’s such a quality to it. i’m excited to see the second one.
No way this movie is scarier or better than Terrifier 3 it was entertaining and a fun expansion on the concept but the opening was great yet the conclusion was confusing and yet predictable. I did like it tho
I'm definitely gonna see this, but I really have to ask: why do films (horror especially) always name their fictional celebrities/famous people such cringey names?
I thought it was much better too. I think a lot of it is because of Naomi Scott - she's excellent. I love the premise of this series, but I wish it was better written. Side note but seen a lot of great performances in Horror this year.
Strange, as much as I loved the film, I think unlike you, believe it fails when it tries to do too little and keeps things grounded. And only has the same predictable jump scares. Especially since it has over an hour and a half of that in Smile 1. Can you explain what you mean by wanting more creativity but you think the movie fails when it gets into the fantasy horror and complicated hallucinations?
My question is, if we avoided to watch the first one cause it looker like another generic Blu house type of horror movie Can we just watch the second one and still understand it or is it relevant to watch the first one? you really hyped me with your review ahah
I just came out of this movies. I didn’t see the first one but really liked this one. There could have been fewer jump scares though and more creepy atmosphere in place instead. The final act could have also been better and less literal although I really liked the final scene.
Spoiler-- I didnt like some missplot, the entity at the end said that the doctor wasnt real because he is de'd so how do we explain who get rid of the dr'g dealer body for the police not investigating her? For me it will have been better if he lets her trap inside by lying to her to try to ki'l her to des'oy the curse.
The original was sort-of okay to check out one time, but certainly not worth a pointless sequel. I mean Happy Death Day was miles better, in terms of actual thrill content, but even that didn’t rate a sequel in my book (nor did X, and now there’s a sequel to its sequel.) 🙄
If the director of smile 2 has a child whether a boy or a girl he has to name them Dol. it would be a travesty & a waste of a golden opportunity if he doesn’t.
That M. Night concert movie kind of ruined the theme for me. The main actor was very expressive, quite gory film featuring a very cringe smile cluster troupe.
