One thing I love about this movie is how it portrays how mental illness can lead you to traumatizing others no matter how much you try to prevent it. Now, I don’t want to excuse hurting people based on mental illness, you can’t simply say “sorry I have x disorder so I can’t help hurting you”, but the way that the main character desperately tries to isolate herself to avoid traumatizing someone else but fails in the end because her own mind tricks her is so painfully reminiscent of real life, and desperately trying not to let your symptoms affect other people’s because you know it’s not fair, you know it’s not right, you know you’re hurting them, but that doesn’t mean you always have the control to stop it.
Trevor pisses me off a lot. Not because he's poorly written but because he's perfectly written as someone who's terrible at dealing with others' suffering. He's constantly mad at Rose, never listens to her and lashes out every time Rose is panicking. He's acted well though

the jumpscares in this movie were the most effective ones I can remember in recent memory, for REAL. I was got EVERY time; even after years of horror, I done SCREAMED at almost every single scare hahaha
Note for aspiring horror filmmakers: Jump scares only work when they come out of nowhere (the air shaft one in Alien being my favorite example). Several minutes of a character walking around in the dark while we sit there waiting for a loud noise is not scary, it's annoying.
I've always found a monster who constantly stalked you and manipulated your mind instead of directly attacking you to be the much more terrifying take on horror. Being chased down by an inhuman monster is suspensful, tense, and adrenaline-pumping, but looking down your dark bedroom and seeing a person smiling at you when you live alone makes your heart skip three beats.
This movie really impressed me as someone who struggles with mental health issues. The idea that you're being "forced" to smile through your pain, having so many people discredit or downplay your experiences and fears, and feeling isolated and confused are all things that resonate with me. I know some people were skewed on the ending since she doesn't make it out, but to me, it exemplifies how even when you bravely face your traumas, they're still a part of you and something you have to learn to live with. This movie could have been a lot more empty and cheap but I think it had a great message.
I was in the military as a Corpsman. A Medic. Being that close to the dead and dying while you're trying to save them or in my case, being the first responder to a call is something I will never forget as much as I want to. I am stable now, with medications and therapy but it will always eat at me. I still have trouble looking at people in the eyes.
I had a friend who is an EMT and he's shared some gnarly stories. I think it helped him to share, like unloading some of the burden he carries. Thank you for helping people in need, I hope some day soon you no longer have trouble looking people in the eyes.
This movie is honestly a really good representation of the struggles of mental health. As someone who suffers from numerous disorders and issues this movie is one that highlights how unintentionally condescending a lot of people react to people like me by asking if we took our meds or saw our therapist as if that fixes anything. they downplay or disregard trauma that directly effects mental health and instead tell us to just be happy and smile because then they don’t have to deal with it, when all that really does is eat away at our mind until we’re to far gone and then people think we’re just crazy. I’ve never seen media depict the mental decline I’ve experienced time and time again and for that i really respect this movie for giving voice to the problems a lot of people like me experience.
James, don't apologize for the blurring. If anything it adds to the encouragement to actually watch the movie in it's full splendor instead of just watch the Kill Count, like you say in so many videos. I watched this movie months ago, and I really like it! I relate to a lot of the troubles Rose deals with throughout the duration of the watch. Besides, the blurring doesn't change the fact that you're still trying to bring high quality content for your viewers. Instead of just going through the movie's major points and counting up the kills, it feels like we're sitting down and discussing movies with a friend, both the good and bad about them, and how much work goes into making them. So keep your head up! You're doing a great job! Side note, as for the viewers: If you know you can handle horror movies, and you can handle themes that this one portrays, go watch it. When James recommends to watch a movie, even if it's a bad one, it's still better to just watch it then 'substitue' it with the Kill Count. I watched Ready Or Not because of James' recommendation, and it's one of my favorite horror comedies. So, watch the movies before you watch the Kill Count (If you can handle horror movies, gore, and uncomfortable themes of course.)
We are less annoyed about not getting to see the blood and more so annoyed that there are channels with stuff far worse than what you see in the movies he covers remain uncensored, yet James shows a bit of blood and they age restrict his ass.
@@Songofgaiafoe oh I know. It’s why I stopped posting a while ago. Cause it seemed like every time I tried to play one of my favorite games on the channel, it would get claimed.
This movie had one of my favorite viral marketing campaigns ever. They paid actors to go to baseball games in seats with high chances of being filmed for tv. They did this at several stadiums the same night. The actors then stood up the whole game and just stared at the camera/on field with the trademark smile. No explaination, no signs, just a creepy person smiling and making everyone uncomfortable. Some even got kicked out of the stadiums.
One things James missed is during the scenes where Rose was getting a toy train for Jackson, the camera looked down at a family smiling being shown for a few seconds, referencing the smiling meant something was going to happen. Edit: I didn’t expect 400+ likes, but I do like knowing 400+ people saw this and probably know this terrifying fun fact.
My favorite scene is the one where the entity poses as Rose's therapist, mainly because the entity takes its time before revealing itself and is just having fun roleplaying as the therapist. I like that, because it shows that the entity has its own twisted sense of humor and knows that it has all the time in the world because it will win eventually, so why not have a little fun in between?
It also low key implies that it may be don't this in other scenarios, scenarios where it isn't interrupted by the real version of the person. Just there, manipulating events without ever actually being caught.
@@MaxiLuca I discussed that scene on my Instagram page on how clever they were by putting it in our face that it wasn't the real therapist by giving her different clothes, but I believe the change in shoes was done for more practical reasons as they obviously couldn't have her walk over the furniture with heels on.
the ending is actually insane if they want to make a third movie they need it to be before the events of the first and second (the true second victim to get the curse)
This movie motivated me to seek mental health counseling , say what you want about the movie’s ending but it did shine a light on what can happen to someone with unchecked trauma. When I was six years old I remember seeing my uncle decapitate his wife in front of the whole family and then shoot himself , my father was affected by it bad so he turned to drugs and soon he took his own life via OD , my cousin turned to drinking but luckily turned his life around but he cites that incident from when we were kids as the reason he turned to the bottle. I used to have nightmares about what happened but tried to just shrug it off , but I realized it affected my relationships with other people , I built walls to try to stop getting close to others cause I feared I would lose them in a vicious way like I lost my uncle and my aunt - it’s been a year now since I’ve been going to therapy , it’s a long road but it’s so worth it - I hope anyone who’s suffering with PTSD can find the necessary help God bless.
I wouldn’t call this film “insanely” gory, films like Evil Dead Rise are more fitting for that description. I’d say this film is more like “effectively” gory. It’s not raining blood in every scene, but when it does have gore it really gets to you more, compared to films with excessive gore.
7:36 i like the distinction in costume design between Holly and Rose, Rose always in this drab blue and Holly in a cheery pink, sets apart their lives and how they've coped with their mother's death and abuse. There are a lot of pops of pinks and blue here and there.
As someone who has struggled with their own mental health and attempts I can confirm that not only does this movie do a great job at showing the more professional point of view but James also does a great job explaining how the movie describes it from someones personal view. It can happen to anyone and it seems like something else to people who don't understand mental health
As a mental health professional, I so appreciate how much care you do take with self harm and suicide. Horror can be a safe space for so many people and your kindness and normalization of mental health and mental health care is so valuable!
blurring it, or disguising it doesnt help the problem. it should be out in the open, and even the subject of jokes. why else do you think cops and firefighters, military, dopctors, EMTs and so many other jobs dealing with trauma and horrible sights have such dark sense of humor?
One good thing about working the graveyard shift is that when I get home from work on Friday mornings there’s a new killcount! Also no need to apologize dude, we get it.
There seems to be smiles hidden throughout this movie, really puts you on edge. 16:28 lights in the window make a smile . Her coffee cup is a smile face
My main gripe with this film is the whole thing of having the character explain the most deranged situations, while completely neglecting to use the facts they’ve gathered, when they’re supposed to be trying to convince others they’re telling the truth. Like I get it, the character is under a lot of stress, and so their behavior will appear erratic to everyone. But the scene with her sister is a perfect example of what I’m talking about. They just have the main actress show her sister a disturbing photo, but they don’t have her say “This has happened back to back with the same situation”. So the sister doesn’t believe her. That sort of thing irks my nerves, and then honestly, even though there was constant scenery changes, it started to feel dull for me at certain points. Like I can’t describe it. Maybe it’s because they kept a heavy feeling through most of the film, which we know was intentional, but for me, if there’s not even one break, it starts to bore me after a while 🤷🏽♀️ so honestly I probably wouldn’t rewatch this film. But I still want to give Smile 2 a chance.
its extra weird cause thats like the only case of the demon messing with the physical world Everything else is just hallucinations but for some reason it murdered her cat and stuffed it in the present? bruh
This movie is a masterpiece ngl, but also Lucy's squeaky meow at the end of that 'get to the Numbers' bit was the wholesome cuteness we needed to balance out the heavy movie topic
i always love the amount of effort put into these videos. they even have captions premade and it’s so easy for me to watch- especially when i can’t have my volume too high and don’t have ear buds on me.
The ending of this movie really surprised me, the fact that we got to know Joel and we ended up loving him, it killed me that he had to witness Rose die, it’s the perfect ending to a perfect horror movie, now all we have to do is wait for the sequel to drop.
I remember going to the bathroom afterwards and actually feeling terrified to look at the dudes around me. It took me a year to get over my fear of this movie lol
If it's any solace for the blurring headache, episodes like this are the only way I get to enjoy movies like this, since I can't stomach the gore in the actual film. Thank you for uploading these!
FINALLY, a movie I was looking forward to James covering! Other than the poor cat, of course, being killed off, this movie was amazing. Easily a top tier horror movie.
I think that we can collectively agree that the blurring is the least of our worries. The fact that you even pump out content the way you do is enough. Keep on keepin on, love the stuff, watched every week for like a million years and will continue to do so!
The Smile Demon may very well be my favorite horror monster, up there with The Thing and Art the Clown. You can’t defeat it, there’s virtually no limit to its power, and as far as we know it’s only doing all of this just because it gets sadistic amusement out of it - none of that “needs to eat” stuff. This is as close to a perfect cinematic depiction of Nyarlathotep as I’ve ever seen, and it’s amazing.
Same, I literally have been dying for number 2 and hope they do a prequel on the guy who broke the cycle and how it came back into existence for smile 3
I really like the cast in this movie, especially the fact that little Rose/regular Rose and her mom really have similar features and you can believe that they are from the same family!
The writing in these kill counts still never ceases to amaze me. The “damned smile” line when talking about Sosie Bacon’s character’s experience when Bacon was also in 13 reasons why. Top notch.
Probably the best jump scare would definitely have to be when during when Morgan’s faces out of nowhere turns into Carl’s from her hallucination. It’s so sudden and has no build up at all, scared the shit out of me.
When I saw this movie, I couldn't stop thinking about the monster. 7:21 the imagery of the blood-soaked smile and the stark white sheet is **chef's kiss** beautiful.

James, never apologize for the limitations of the platform. Your team's passion and enthusiasm are exploding from your vids.
Hope you’re doing better now.

@@Chuck_ELKyle Gallner played Bart Allen.

@@twister107 Exactly! TH-cam only ever seems to throw genuine channels under the bus, while worse channels seemingly go unnoticed.
Well, no signs...some wore a shirt with the smile word on
23:50 THE CUTEST LITTLE LUCY NOISE EVER OMG

One things James missed is during the scenes where Rose was getting a toy train for Jackson, the camera looked down at a family smiling being shown for a few seconds, referencing the smiling meant something was going to happen.
Edit: I didn’t expect 400+ likes, but I do like knowing 400+ people saw this and probably know this terrifying fun fact.
I really liked Smile, it was a little derivative of other horror movies, but it was still well done and nicely acted. Looking forward to the sequel 👄

Y'all keep giving me shout outs in these videos and it warms my heart!! Thank you so much!
@@jimm60701 With a sequel coming out later this year, I'm genuinely hoping we get more scenes like this.
Yeah I really liked how the actress was able to stand and walk over the furniture without trouble. It was very stiff and straight and almost inhuman.
@@MaxiLuca I discussed that scene on my Instagram page on how clever they were by putting it in our face that it wasn't the real therapist by giving her different clothes, but I believe the change in shoes was done for more practical reasons as they obviously couldn't have her walk over the furniture with heels on.
My favorite scene had to be when the credits started rollin

I’m so glad to hear you are embarking on that journey-same here and this movie hit hard. You’re so right saying it’s tough but so worth it
Best of all you're not alone. So many people are not alone. Realize it'll be worth it to know others in the same type of situations. 💜

As someone who has struggled with their own mental health and attempts I can confirm that not only does this movie do a great job at showing the more professional point of view but James also does a great job explaining how the movie describes it from someones personal view. Jame's little "that's not nice :(" made me laugh so hard it was unreasonably funny

You know it’s a good kill count when he has to blur a bunch of the movie.
Or when has a content warning before the video begins

The Smile Demon may very well be my favorite horror monster, up there with The Thing and Art the Clown. You can’t defeat it, there’s virtually no limit to its power, and as far as we know it’s only doing all of this just because it gets sadistic amusement out of it - none of that “needs to eat” stuff.
