“Not Going Quietly”: Paralyzed with ALS, Ady Barkan Continues Fighting for Medicare for All

  • We speak with healthcare activist Ady Barkan, the 37-year-old lawyer and father who, since his ALS diagnosis in 2016, has devoted his life to campaigning for universal healthcare. He has continued to speak out even after losing his voice and now uses a computerized system that converts his eye movements to speech. Barkan is the subject of “Not Going Quietly,” a new documentary following his cross-country activism. “Only a truly radical departure from our exploitative, for-profit model to one that guarantees healthcare as a right for all will ensure that we no longer live in a nation where people go bankrupt on account of their medical bills,” Barkan tells Democracy Now! “We need Medicare for All now.” We also speak with the film’s director, Nicholas Bruckman, who says he immediately saw a “spark” in Barkan after meeting him in 2018.

    It is hard to put into words the heroic efforts this man is making on behalf of the American people at the most difficult time of his life. If we all could have a fraction of his determination, we could hold our Congress accountable and force this most important and life saving issue. Thank you Ady for your inspiration .

Lots of managers are lining their pockets by profiting from the misfortune of sickness of public. Lawyers to profit from misfortune of others. In Canada the system is public funded but it sucks. While they say it is free for everyone. But quality of care is so shoddy that there really is no care at all . Free for all but then you are free to die while you wait for being treated. That counts as being free.

    As a Canadian, I find the lack of universal health care in the world's wealthiest nation as nothing but insanity. I'm not saying that I live in a paradise. There are many forces in Canada that work to dismantle our system of universal health care and replace it with a user-pays system, or some kind of "two-tier health care system". There are many abuses of our national system of health care, and we have some of the longest examination wait times in the Western world. However, if I need to, I can go into any hospital or clinic in any province or territory in Canada, and, as long as I have my provincial or territorial health card, I will be examined and cared for for free because I contribute to a common fund through my taxes. I also require a very expensive immunosuppressive drug administered intravenously every 10 weeks that I would never be able to afford in the USA, but that costs me essentially nothing because I contribute to this national fund.

    • @yourmajesty1630
      @yourmajesty1630 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      long examination wait times has nothing to do with the type of healthcare system you have. it has to do with how many doctors, nurses, tech, equipment, supplies and technology you have in relation to the number of people seeking those services are. so wait times has zero to do with whether a healthcare is nationalized.

    • @tammiew746
      @tammiew746 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is money to be made inserting private insurance and healthcare providers into these national systems. The UK is experiencing the exact same thing. And in the USA we have private health insurance forcing its way into Medicare with Supplements - selling them with cheap add ons to pull people away from the Medicare-provided extensions, all the while applying the same for-profit approach in denying claims and limiting payouts. People have no idea what they are giving up! I constantly hear of old people not getting the care they think they are due because they have picked up Medicare Supplement/Medigap insurance.

    I cried many times watching... What a story! While doing it I only could think about what being human really means, how we all take this miracle for granted and how we all waste it. Arts, religions and philosophy should be the levers and anchors to people not get away of it but...
    I'm starting a book (in paper!) by Bernie Siegel, who you could have on your show to talk about a world in desperate need of self healing, it's called "The art of healing", and yesterday a phrase struck me although not a novelty: "What travelled across the world and across generations was not matter but intelligence" (pg. 07, original version).
    And Ady's growing as human being while his body's abilities leave him just proves not only that but makes me wonder what, then, our body experience, being "incarnated" is needed for? Maybe that's what we are going to learn through ecological collective demise, what individuals learn when experience the loss of physical and spiritual well being. What does it mean to be human after all ? If all of us know that greed leads nowhere, everything goes to ashes and what really matter are those rare and born-to-be-gone moments of joy and encounters with life - through people, Nature and our own inner world: why in the hell we as a society still can't be better than that?
    Maybe suffering is one of the roads to learning but I think it's a twisted one, it doesn't need to be like that, there are ways to go through pain to knowledge and learning without it, at least in ordinary material conditions we can and should be less dumb than we are in general unless that stupidity is rooted in the inability of being fully human, (great that Ady, in the clip on the politician's office, first said that simple although neglected truth before talking the "language of power" which is a way of being human foolishly). Paraphrasing Siegel, how do we live (in the) as matter intelligently? I don't know, maybe that's not an individual ability and not only needs to be learned in social relationships but to be practised every day, like sleep or feeding. Our collective extinction is being preceded by the individual's as an entity. And ironically profited off by those who think that individual and collective are mutually exclusive when they are in true sense interdependent. Is it humaNature?
    Thanks for this moment of truth in a show of lies that is the daily news everywhere.

    I have had to declare bankruptcy because of medical bills. My 9 year old had cancer, we had the top tier health insurance and that 20% co- pay would of put us out on the street, if I didn’t go through bankruptcy. The stigma and humiliation of that process was awful. When I was young I grew up a military “ brat”. Expand that healthcare that dependents get via military. That’s another answer along with expanding Medicare.

    We can't have medicare for all until we reform medical care. No country could pay for the cost of medicare for all in the current practice of medicine. Doctors are paid to prescribe vastly overpriced drugs, devices, and treatments . So many drugs are possibly more harm than good and cost tens of thousands of dollars a year. And dentists are only interested in getting you big loans so you can have a total mouth makeover. Hearing Aides start at $5,000 and you may not even need a hearing aide. My 80 year old friend went to a hearing aide place and was diagnosed and prescribed a $5,000 hearing aid, He went to the doctor, and his ears were full of wax, that removed his hearing was fine. Bad people are bad. And high priced meds are prescribed "off label" and insurance pays!

As I said, I didn't like that approach having spent half my life in the UK under the NHS - which has its own problems but those are largely down to conservative governments chipping away at its funding and trying to turn it into a private system. But I do understand that the majority of people here support a universal healthcare system and don't really know how to get there. Majority buy in would probably support incremental and to do that, you need to use the public option within the ACA.

      @@tammiew746 - Whether it's incremental or straight to single payer, we have too many bought-off rep's & dem's to pass either. The first order of business needs to be minimizing big money's influence.

    We maybe could've gotten a president who would have seriously pursued m4a, but he chose to endorse Warren, further fracturing the left during the primaries...
